Glad I read this but it was nothing super special. It is very self aware thought which made it a little more interesting.

I feel like John Scalzi is an author who likes taking a fun idea and playing with it (in Red Shirts, Starter Villain and the Kaiju Preservation Society). My first introduction to his work was through Fuzzy Nation, which I really enjoyed, and also Locked In.

I think that is a fair assessment!

Thanks for such an honest review. I'm glad I heard your opinion on this. It never really jumped out at me anyway. I think I will stick with the Star Trek I know. Hope the next book is better. Happy reading.

It's not just you, I and most people I've chatted about this book with had a similar experience with it. After reading some of his other more recent stuff like Starter Villian and Kaiju Preservation Society, I have those two and Redshirts chalked up as books he wrote for the fun of it and not troubling to take himself seriously. Maybe there's some meat underneath it all but if so it's buried under an extremely thick layer of cheesy goodness. You can check out Kaiju Preservation Society, it's very on brand for him, the ending won't shock you or anything but kaijus, who cares, ha.

Redshirts Was on my tbr and after I read Starter Villan (pleasant but forgettable) I decided to bump it down... and have yet to pick it up. I'm guessing my reaction to it would be similar to yours. Thanks!

Super curious after listening to this review. When reading books, what do you find to be the most enjoyable parts? i.e. the writing, the characters, the plot? And what do you hate in books too?

So I normally say Im a moments reader. I really enjoy powerful moments and that can be a lot of different things. A character overcoming something, a change in the plot that blows me away, something sad or happy. As far as hate, lately i have really hated characters making bad logical decisions. When a character does something that just feels so wrong it really frustrates me.

I bet you'd be more of a DS9 guy. There are character and story arcs as the basis. TNG is still good, but I like DS9 better. And the original series is just okay to me as whole, there are some fantastic episodes though. Have you ventured into the Bobiverse yet? It's not really as satrical take on sci-fi, but there's a humor to it that feels just right while still grounded in somewhat realistic boundaries.

@@TomOrange Nice. I just got into it last month and added the rest into my TBR after the first few chapters.
