*@Flame Fox* I've seen the special myself on Netflix, the characters aren't well defined and are very bland. They have around 2 distinguishable character traits per character at the most.

FuturisticEggThief I can see where you are coming from, and I guess they could have done better at making them more defined, but as is, they had personalities that you could tell SOMEWHAT tell apart, although it was more subtle than FIM, most of them were still good characters. Pinkie Pie is kind of like her G4 counterpart, except more down-to-Earth and less hyper, and could even be a bit snarky at times. Rainbow Dash (BEFORE Core-7) was wise and motherly and mature. Wysteria was a lot like the Fluttershy we have now, except her gig was plants as opposed to animals. (She also didn't have panic attacks as severe as Fluttershy's, either.) Minty was clumsy, a goofball, a ditz, and she had some OCD as seen in this movie. Also seen in this movie is that she tries to fix her mistakes before anyone sees them and is like Applejack in that she doesn't wanna ask for help first. She actually gets the MOST characterization in this movie. Rarity was rebellious, fun-loving and didn't like to follow rules, also not understanding her role of responsibility, which stirs up conflict in her movie, The Runaway Rainbow. So they're not ALL interchangeable. Could they have had more defining traits? Some of them, yes. But as is, some of them do!

The family part at the end made me smile. Even the worst of life can make things better in hindsight. I definitely believe parents and their kids should watch something together without any discomfort. When I have kids, I will be there for them and watch stuff I grew up with that I loved at every age I have been. I am unsure if anything will get better in animation networks after things like Breadwinners and Sanjay and Craig and Toddler Titans, but I know that I will have classics to show them that are filled with stories, intelligent humor, character development, and love and effort put into them. I will not show them stuff like the aforementioned atrocities until they have common sense and are able to tell right from wrong. I am debating if I will show them anime at a young age but if I do, I would definitely be there to make sure they understand that certain things are not okay (like throwing knives and cursing).

Of course you can show them anime. :) There are TONS of series meant for little kids (everyone, really) and they're awesome, too. Heck, Pokemon and Yugioh are good places. Cardcaptor Sakura, Polar Bear Cafe, Angelic Layer, the more innocent Miyazaki films like Totoro, Chi's Sweet Home, Lovely Muuuuuuco, etc. There are, literally, tons of anime that are safe for kids. I highly recommend early exposure. It'll make the otaku transition much easier when they get older. ;) If you're worried about cursing and throwing sharp objects, then don't start them on Naruto (unless it's the crappy dub) till they're around 7.

Yeah, Inuyasha is a 12+ series. It was one of the first series I ever saw on Adult Swim WAY back in the day. But I was in my early twenties at the time. If you're ever curious if a series is kid friendly, watch it yourself first to get an idea.

This WAS my childhood! But I think many bronies forget that MLP has, and still does, only exists for the sole purpose of selling plastic toys. It’s a happy accident if MLP is even remotely good. Hasbro has never actually cared about the quality of the animated MLP show because as long as it sells well in the merch department they’ll keep shoving glitter at the screen.
