This is my guitar lesson on a very Arabic-sounding flamenco guitar scale, the harmonic minor. It is only one note different from the natural minor scale, but this one note changes everything, and makes it sound like very distinctive. The TABs are on Patreon: / edinabalczo

Edina, this is beauty. Arabic sound scales are actually exist on all over Spanish Flamenco sound. Lots of similarities. Even the Flamenco lady dress in dancing is the conservative Arabic style. The hand clamping you can here it in Arabic sounds. The drums being used was the setting chairs of the Ameers in Andalusia. It is great pleasure to hear the Spanish music today with the remaining Arabic sounds

So beautifully explained, Edina! It is very difficult to describe this particular scale and its use in a simple and understandable way, but you have managed to do it. Using "Caravan" as an example, instead of a flamenco Zambra, was a very good choice, since it is relatively simple and a widely-known tune.

This is a very good instructive video on guitar scales. There is one thing though, there is nothing 'mysterious about Arabic sounding scales. The guitar was gifted to the Spanish by the Arabs. Classical Spanish music has a very strong Arabic influence. Even the Spanish language is influenced. For example; but for the Arabs, there would be no letter 'J'. in their language. All was made possible because the Arabs had control of the Iberian peninsular for about 780 years.

You can mix Harmonic minor scale and the Phrygian Dominant scale (which is the 5th mode of the Harmonic minor scale) - it is used widely in Flamenco and Arabic music. It's even used quite a bit in Heavy Metal by people like Ritchie Blackmore et al. And as always it is well known in the classical Hindustani as well as the Jewish scales for music. Somebody probably uses it in Jazz somewhere too. Not sure if this is what you were playing or talking about, but just thought I'd pipe in all the same. Spanish guitar is not that far from the Arabic 'maqams'. All of it mixes in to everything else. Bit like the Hungarian accent (probably one of the most beautiful accents in the world). :-)
@TheSpanishGuitarHub
@TheSpanishGuitarHub 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Yes at the beginning I was thinking to either use this scale on a Phrygian dominant or harmonic minor because they are the same. But I recently did A minor so I thought I just link it up like this. Thanks for your comment! X

+Neo Moro - I don't really. I just pick up the fragments. When I see a good video like this with someone playing and making sense of it all, it jogs me on to brush up on the old theory. Lots of fragments remain and I piece them together, but new fragments are formed as well. That is what makes a great teacher.

can you explain me how do you know which chords are matching the scale?
@TheSpanishGuitarHub
@TheSpanishGuitarHub 5 жыл бұрын
That would be a few hours lesson haha. Depends on the sequence of the notes. If you start from the first note what is the 3rd5th and 7th note of the scale? That makes up a chord. After the second chord comes so again the root note changes and we need to look at what are the 3rd 5th and 7th note which makes up a chord but also the other notes are influencing as well.
