On reusing old signs for new : When the M4 was diverted over the new Second Severn Bridge, the old remaining ox-bow motorway over the original Severn Bridge was renumbered M48, so it had its own set of junctions. Happily/coincidentally, the junctions were 21 (Avonmouth) and 22 (Chepstow) so rather than rip down all the old signs and put new ones up or put ugly patches over the junction numbers, they simply blacked out the initial numeral 2 on the junction signs so that the junction numbers became 1 and 2. M4 Junction 21 then was resited to beoame the turnoff for the M48, junction 22 for the M49 with M4 junction 23 remaining as the turn off for Magor. A new junction on the new motorway to keep the numbering system consistent wasn't particularly needed as it's not unusual for motorway junctions to skip numbers or duplicate them (further up in Newport other regeneration meant there's now a 25 and a 25A) but it's nice that in this instance it all worked out. Most of the blanked out signs have now been since replaced as it is nearly 30 years since the roads diverged however there is at least one still extant on the English side of the bridge westbound for Junction 1 (old 21).

Crossover comment: I much prefer the Spanish way of naming motorway junctions. Every highway starts at KM 0, and the junction name is the nearest KM marker so you know if you are getting on at junction 10 and are going to junction 61 you will be driving for 50KM before you need to start looking for your exit. Also if your junction name has a letter like 42c then you know you need to be on your toes as there are multiple junctions within a very short space.
@Random37164 ай бұрын
@@JonnyJKFWe also use this system in the US for the Interstate Highway System, except since each state is in charge of their section the 0 marker is the point where the highway crosses the state line.
@JonnyJKF4 ай бұрын
@@Random3716 I also like the way the US numbers the interstates west to east, north to south with odd for north to south, even for west to east so you know by the number roughly where it is on the map.

When I went to university, there was a Chinese restaurant called "Mr. Paninos Beijing House". Apparently, there was a restaurant named "Mr. Paninos" that served stuff like Balkan sandwiches, but closed. When a Chinese restaurant opened in that location, they didn't bother to change the sign, so they had this sign claiming they served these sandwiches when they served Chinese food. Years after, they changed the sign, but because everyone knew them as "Mr. Paninos", they kept the name, and it was a local meme. Unfortunately, it closed during the brunt of the pandemic, and the next tenant did not use the Mr. Paninos name :( BTW, the picture of Tom wearing the "Lads on Tour" t-shirt was shown in a Park Bench video lol

The local bar in my area used to be called "Paradiset" - "The Paradise", but part of their sign fell off and "diset" - "The haze" remained and they figured it was cheaper to rename the company than to fix the sign. This is also a strong indication of the quality of the bar.

When I was at college in Orlando FL in the 90s, I used to go to a dance club called "The Club." Which everyone just called "Firestone's." Why? - - - The Club moved into an old Firestone Tires store, but left the sign up rather than replace it with their own (also because it had been a very old store with a very old, neat sign). The Firestone Tire company actually sued them at one point, but since they were actually incorporated as "The Club", the case was dismissed(?) in favor of The Club. Sadly, I don't think The Club is still there. Or it has at least changed hands and names.
