It's really not a big deal the amount of gunk picked up from a mopped down mixture of 1 can of Coke diluted into a gallon of warm water is tiny. In about 1969, my mom read an article stating that if you spray soda on your linoleum floor, the acids will soften the grime, making the floor easy to clean. She tried it and, not to my surprise, figured that you had to scrub the floor so hard to remove the sticky soda that the floor got clean, regardless of how dirty it started.

Randomly, I used to be in a bowling league and there were times when either the lane or your shoes (or the combination thereof) were too slippery. That extra slide of even just a few centimeters could genuinely throw off your game, so there were a lot of tricks to make you "stick" to the floor more. If you've been bowling, you know the shoe bottoms are essentially flat with almost no traction (because you *do* want *some* slide). And, as the alley-and other bowlers sharing the lane-really frown on pouring soda all over their floors, you need other tricks. Back in the day, one of the best ones was to grab a cigarette out of the ashtray and rub the ash on the bottom of your shoes (especially if the slipperiness was due to liquid or oils on your shoe). A pencil eraser can also scuff up the sole just enough to add some "stick." too. People would rub shoes on the edge of stairs or try to find dusty spots (like under the ball storage racks) to step in. And one of the strangest was going to the restroom (primarily men's) and looking for old urine on the floor to step in. Fresh urine was too wet, but if someone missed the urinal a few hours ago, the urine may have dried enough to be sticky (and less gross, sometimes you could find old sticky soda spills in bar or restaurant areas or under seating around the lanes). Just like the question, an overly slippery floor/shoe not only messed up your game, but could literally be dangerous-especially on ankles. I knew several people who tried to stop an unanticipated slide and rolled their ankles, spraining them. And I knew at least one who whacked their ankle with the bowling ball on their swing while trying to compensate for a slide. The worst, though, was someone in our league who started to slide, tried to correct, OVER-corrected, slid more, fell full-on into the splits on their attempt to recover-despite NOT normally being able to do the splits, and tore a groin muscle. In short bowling = ballet.

You would do this for ballroom dancing as well - only you would not mop the whole floor with cola, just soak a towel and then rub your dancing shoes. I would only do this if there is no other way but yeah it works. Other means to make your shoes sticky are using wax (on the floor if its a dancing floor or in pulverized form to just put it somewhere and step into it). But at some venues you do not have the luxury of a good floor or you cannot put wax on it because of reasons, then use water or coke on your shoes.
