A Very SOLID Portrait Lens | Vivitar 75-205mm f/3.8 Lens Review

We're back for 2019!
Today we take a look at a cheap macro, portrait lens from the 80s. This Vivitar 75-205mm zoom lens has a Canon FD mount, this is perfect for the Canon AE-1 range.

I have one of these along with the 2x 'matched multiplier' that Vivitar marketed at the time. Bought the set back in early 1980's and they are both in excellent condition. Have taken many great photographs with it. One thing I really like about it is it maintains constant lens aperture throughout it's zooming range..unlike most zoom lenses now which shift effective aperture as the focal length is extended.

Production value level up! Great video guys. I'll pretend like a certain comment about Fuji was never uttered. As side note, I have that Vivitar 70-210 3.5 (you mentioned. It's very solid. Makes me want to get it out and shoot with it.

if you want one of the best third party telephoto zoom lenses look no further than the vivitar series 1 70-210 f2.8-4 ver. 3 (komine)

the sears auto is a good option too 70-210 f4 with multi coating, all metal super slim with a 55mm filter thread (same the most of the canon 50 f1.8's) which is convenient, and it's multi coated, super sharp, and the colors look awesome

what?! only 750 grams? my 100-200mm zoom lens for my Mamiya RB67 weighs in at a very modest 1750 grams...a real lightweight...lol..I have Canon AE-1 too that I was given by one of the truck drivers that comes to where I work, he was going to throw it out till I said I would take it if he didnt want it. came with a 50mm1.8 lens and a 100-300mm Canon lens as well. and great to see you guys back again as well.

I have the same lens, 75-205 all metal and branded as Cavalier. It is indeed heavy and will build up a muscle on your arm carrying it around. I think the weight can be a plus as it helps reduce camera shake.. I find it to be a good portrait lens and I wouldn't sell it.

Snap..... picked it up for £10.00 just a few days ago completely by chance and its virtually mint. Adapted to my Fuji Xt3.... its fantastic.... sharp enough at f3.8. My sliding zoom and focus ring is much stiffer and more damped than that shown in this vid. I think their version was very well used.... a bit floppy 😄

I'm looking at Lenses for my Brother's Canon AE-1 Program I got him last year for Christmas, question, is the 70mm-205mm like the distance it can go? And would I need an adaptor for my Brother's camera for this lense or now

Hi! It depends on what mount the Vivitar lens has. I don't believe it was an exclusive fd mount.

Regarding your comment at 6:33, about the shutter speed required to defeat motion blur, of course , you must match (or exceed) the shutter speed to the (FF equivalent) focal length, when shooting handheld. Because this is a full frame camera, it's easy math. At 200mm you must be at 1/200 or faster. Your suggestion of 1/250 is a good one. Mentioning the ISO just confuses things. ISO 800, or even ISO one million wouldn't change the fact that you must match (or exceed) the shutter speed to the (FF equivalent) focal length when shooting handheld, regardless of of the ISO.

Thanks for the review. I got a Vivitar 75-205 f/3.8 lens used but like new in the box; and whenever I try to turn the aperture ring or black lever on the mount nothing happens visually in the lens.... Is this normal or does it mean my lens is bad? Thanks...

It sounds like the spring that connects the aperture lever to the aperture mechanism may have broken or become detached.

A person on facebook was selling one of this for 20 bucks, and i really want to buy it, but my question here is this... Since I use a canon 60D (EF mount) what adapter would I have to buy for a lens like this, if thats even posible haha

The vivitar is an FD mount lens, so you'd have to get an EF-FD mount adaptor :)
