This is one of my favorite bands. Got to see them in 2000. Awesome. One of the greatest jam bands ever rivaling the Greatful Dead. They have a flag hanging in Madison Square Garden. Next to the retired numbers of athletes. They played the baker's dozen at the Garden. 13 straight sold out shows and they never repeated a song! This rabbit hole is DEEP.

My first show was 1991 Halloween at Colorado College's Armstrong Hall in Colorado Springs...I had heard two tracks off Lawnboy prior to the show...3 hits of relatively powerful LSD and everyone was in costume. Pretty wild night. ended up seeing them probably another dozen times. They take some getting used to, Trey likes to weave in and out between dissonance and harmony...suspended for as long as he thinks the crowd can take it, then the resolution hits like a hammer. Very fun band.

so glad you finally found Phish! as others have mentioned, Phish are a LIVE band. The album tracks are really just to provide jumping off points for the live jams, no two renditions the same, no two concerts alike. Phish are still great today but were probably at their peak in the mid to late 90's at which point Trey was arguably the best guitarist on the planet at the time. If you really want to see how it could get, do yourself a big big favor and search for the live video of Divided Sky from 10/31/94, absolutely brain melting

So glad you decided to check them out. I HIGHLY recommend listening to them live. Here is what i would suggest for the next song - “Stash”. They’re known for extended improvised jam sections of songs, and I love this one, but it’s also not CRAZY long at a little over 10 minutes. Trust me, the time should go by quickly. Ok, ok, ok, ok, ok! You're in my wheelhouse! Phish formed at the University of Vermont, which I attended when they were playing the dorms and Nectar's. I arrived the same year that the bassist, Mike Gordon, graduated (1987). I lived in the same dorm complex, Wing Davis Wilkes, where Mike and guitarist Trey Anastasio met. Their songs can be laid back, but most are rocking! The band is known for live performances. Let me suggest other songs to try that will hook you more than I think Farmhouse can: You Enjoy Myself, Run Like an Antelope, Harry Hood, Down with Disease, Divided Sky, Tweezer, Split Open & Melt, Reba, Contact, Esther, Lizards, Ghost, Harpua, Mike's Song, and Weekapaug Groove. Start with live versions from 1992-95 because those years were unbelievable. The energy, the humor, the musicality, the talent. This is a band that has more often than not the last 25 years played Madison Square Garden for New Years Eve. They hosted festivals where they were the only band, and 60,000 or more attended. They've been on SNL, Letterman, The Simpsons, and South Park. They've been on the cover of Rolling Stone. But I digress. Welcome to the school of Phish. Btw, when I started at UVM in 1987, Burlington had an amazing atmosphere. We had Phish when they were small, Ben & Jerry's just before they went national, and we had Bernie Sanders for mayor.

This band was big among my contemporaries when I was in college in the 90’s. I saw them several times live. Great shows. People followed the tour like people followed the Grateful Dead. The guitarist is elite level. One of the GOATS. They’ve got tons of great songs. Sometimes they let themselves go out on a limb during a jam and get really Phishy. Some people love that, and others can get turned off by it if they’re not vibing with the jam. I think you’ll really like them, but you may not like everything they’ve done. And that’s okay. Enjoy!

Thank you for your reaction to this song. I admit it’s not one I was familiar with until you shared it with us. And it’s a really good song. Nevertheless, I will let you in on a little “secret” (It’s not really a secret, but it’s some thing that someone new to this genre might not know): Phish is part of a very large genre often known as “jam band“. While these bands have some things in common, each one has their own unique sound. But the one thing they do have in common usually, they sound much better lives than they do in the studio. It’s all about the jamming that they do when they play live. For example, they may take a song that on their studio album might be five minutes long, but in concert, it could be as much as an hour! Or anywhere in between. Or even if they only play a shorter version of the song, it usually flows into another song without stopping. And of course there is a lot more improvisation and solos and duos etc. between all the instruments. The Grateful Dead, is one of the premier jam bands of all time. And you owe it to yourself to start reacting to some of their live shows. In general, a lot of these jam bands, will not do copyright strikes against their live shows or unofficial releases, and are often not controlled by the record companies. So although you can still stop the video, to help prevent against a copyright strike, usually you don’t need to. In any case they usually sound much better life. Other great jam bands: Umphrey’s McGee, Gov’t Mule, and one of my favorites of all time, JAZZ IS DEAD, which have been playing since 1998, and do mostly jazz-rock fusion instrumental versions of Grateful Dead songs. Another Dead “tribute” that I think you will love, is The Persuasions (my favorite acapella group of all time - so much soul! Started as gospel, but then did all kinds of music) versions of Dead songs, first on a double album, titled PERSUASIONS OF THE DEAD (see what they did there?). Maybe start that one with my favorite Dead song, and one of my favorite songs, period, “Brokedown Palace”, which for me, is even better than the Dead’s version. Anyways, keep up the great work.

If you get the chance to see a Halloween show, do it! They play three sets. The first and last are phish. The second is a cover of an album they like, in its entirety. I got to see three, 1995 Chicago, The Who, 1998 Vegas, The Velvet Underground, and 2014 Vegas, when they covered an old Halloween music & sounds album whose name I don't remember. That was my last show. My first was 23 Nov 1991 in Barre VT. If you go to any show, go early to enjoy the parking lot. Bring plenty of beverages and wear a hat. Whether it's rain or shine, a hat is nice.

Hey RSR thanks for jumping into Phish! Amber seems to have gotten hooked already! This is a very deep rabbit hole my friends but one you both are ready for now that you are so well versed in the way that rock music has morphed from the 50's right up through the 90's. A vibrant, live music Jam Band scene that has been spawned by Bands like the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers began in the mid 90's and Phish was one of the main drivers. They are four guys that went to college together in the 80's and are now absolute music legends born and raised in the 70's listening to the radio and falling in love with many of the same songs you have reacted to! Enjoy!! BTW they are just like Grateful Dead and allow music sharing of all of their many many live shows so you can play anything you would like!

Phish Trey Anastasio, guitar and lead vocals Jon Fishman, drums and vocals Mike Gordon, bass guitar and vocals Page McConnell, piano, keyboards and vocals Music and lyrics by Tom Marshall and Trey Anastasio “Farmhouse” was recorded July to October 1999. I have been obsessed and revolved my life around this band for the past 31 years, literally. I say this was all of my love because I love this band and I love their music but you picked the most elementary song as your intro. I suggest their return to the stage on 3/6/09 “Fluffhead” to check it out because they rarely have us taken a breather. It’s nonstop high energy live music for hours and hours with no opening act. George Lynch of Dokken had a band called Lynch Mob..There big song from there 1st album was "WICKED SENSATION "...It would be well worth reacting to. Keep doing what you're doing...Being a Hard Rock/Heavy Metal drummer myself I'm a big fan and I love seeing young people discovering & enjoying all that cool stuff from the 70s,80s & 90s!!!!

The Ben and Jerry ice cream Phish is named after the band. This song is always on my playlist plus several others. My sons have been going to their shows since the 90s. They go to the one in Denver every Labor Day and of course go to every day. They don't repeat a song. They did a 13 night run at Madison Square Garden and never repeated a song on any night. They also have a New Years concert at least they stream every year. You'll have to look it up. They had whales and dolphins swimming in the air around the audience. They were drones but it looks incredible! The other band they have followed for years is The String Cheese Incident. I really like their song Sirens. I still would love to see you react to Adam Lambert. He's a singer that has been been the front man for Queen since 2011 and Brian and Roger love him! He's had a successful solo career as well. He has 4 albums of original work and his new album is of cover songs that he has redone like he did when he sang Believe for Cher. Now he's associated with the song Believe in a different way...The Muffin Man 😂. He sang the opera aria Nessun Dorma when he was in Italy with Queen on tour last summer. He was the headline act of London Pride last month and the song he recorded You Make Me Feel Mighty Real was the song of London Pride. He also performed at Wembley Stadium in June as well. I would check out him singing Closer to You (Live Sessions) but most people start at with him singing Cher's Believe to Cher at The Kennedy Center Honors. Brian May calls him a Gift from God and Roger Taylor says no one can outsing Adam Lambert. That's from rock royalty.

As a few people have suggested, "Chalkdust Torture" next please!!!! A live version would be amazing, but the studio one is great as well. You guys rock by the way!!! Love all your videos!!!

I’m so glad you finally listened to phish. I’ve been recommending them to you for ages and honestly, you couldn’t have picked a more boring, less representative song. But now that you’re interest is peaked, how about a real banger like down with disease, sample in a jar, Julius, really anything off of the “Hoist” album. There’s also Llama, Free, Run like an antelope, wolf man’s brother. So much other stuff that really hi-lights the amazing musicianship this bad has to offer. Beware, the live stuff is amazing but also super long and they wander around a lot. I’d stick with the studio albums to start.

Phish is also known for holding 3 day weekend shows, turning into a Huge Festival with More people than you can imagine! Never got to see them, but their talents are amazing!

Phish is a band best appreciated live. You have to do some live Phish. Much like the Grateful Dead fans follow them from show to show and they pretty much sell out every show. Glad you are diving into Phish!

You would love Backwards Down The Number Line (from the album Joy) for another Phish tune. And the studio version of Esther is hauntingly beautiful.
