The backstory to this makes this even more powerful. Tribute to God. As a metal head in the 80's through now, I've always listened to all genres. As a musician of 37yrs, I found that you can find inspiration in anything. This song was everywhere when it was released, couldn't escape it. This song forced me to dig deeper into the British R&B scene and let me tell you, some gems were found. (i.e. Five Star, Junior, Mica Paris, Loose Ends, David Grant and of course, the well knowns Lisa Stansfield, Rick Astley, Neneh Cherry , Simply Red, Billy Ocean). Amazing time in British R&B.

Sade is a British band. A lot of people think Sade is a solo singer, but they're actually a 4 member band named after the lead singer. Some other R&B groups/singers are 5 Star, Loose Ends, Swing Out Sister, Brand New Heavies (lead singer N'Dea is from the USA), Joss Stone, Craig David, Jamiroquai, Floetry, Average White Band (Scottish), Incognito, Lisa Stansfield, Des'ree, Level 42, The Pasadenas, Hiatus Kaiyote (Australian), Junior, Wham!/George Michael (Wham! even has some rap tracks like "Wham Rap!" & "Young Guns".

A BANGER! Next, try Be Fair, also from Soul II Soul. The whole album is a must listen imho. Caron, the lead singer, wrote Back to Life after almost dying in childbirth, so this is a song of celebration and perseverance. Soul II Soul basically spawned a cultural movement in Britain, their influence went beyond the music. So glad you've found them!

This song brings lots of memories as a pre-teen in the late 80s. Soul II Soul changed our music in the US. It was a unique sound that we NEVER heard here before, especially from a Black British Group. Most of us didn’t know that there were any Black people in England, especially who can sing!!! Caron Wheeler is on Lead Vocals, but Jazzie B is the Leader and Founder of the group who gave us this new sound from the UK. “Back 2 Life” “Keep On Movin’”, “Jazzie’s Groove”, were #1 hits on the R&B charts in the late 80s, especially with Caron singing the lead vocals are amazing. @@leec6707 Though there were Black R&B British music artists that made hits that became very huge here in the US like Billy Ocean and Loose Ends in the early to mid 80s, I never paid attention to where they came from. In my neighborhood and schools, there was limited education and knowledge about other black cultures and experiences from other countries. And, of course there was limited media coverage of R&B Artist from other countries. 🎤🎼🎵

@@helicoptersrkool I agree. I was born in 1975 and every year from about 1982 till 2000 has its own distinct place in my memory.. where I can recall and place my memories according to each year. I know exactly which year songs and movies came out, I can correctly guess when fashion trends were popular, and I can even correctly guess the model years of the cars from that era. But after the 2000s came, everything just flew by and I can't do any of that anymore.. I often wonder how did it go by so fast, and why is that any random year, let's say 2006 for example, is so indistinguishable in my memory compared to the years in the 80's and 90s. I couldn't name a song from 2006 if my life depended on it! 😆

In England in the late 80s we had a culture called Acid house which mainly resided in underground clubs warehouses. By the summer of 89 we had moved into big raves in farmer fields and this echoed through the fields as the sun rised . This track will always have a special place in my life . Such beautiful times

Guys you shouldn't miss M People for sure, with the wonderful Heather Small magnificent voice as lead singer. The best of the British R&B of the 90th scene, any song of them is a gem and an unforgettable vibe of the time. I would start with "Don't look any further" then "Heather Small - Proud", "Just For You", "one night in heaven", "moving on up", " A sight for sore eyes", "Renaissance", "Itchycoo Park", "Search for the hero" so many big hits. You cannot, not know them.

The late 80's and early 90's brought a few absolute game changing tracks out from the UK scene. Back to Life is one I'd recommend Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" as another. Shara Nelson has an amazingly soulful voice on this one, you can really feel the heartache! From the title and video you'll definitely see an influence on the Verve's Bittersweet Symphony too. This and Keep On Moving are their best songs. The lead singer is Caron Wheeler. She left the group after a couple of years to go solo. The first British R&B group to have #1 hits on the US R&B charts in the 80s and 90s is Loose Ends. "Watching You" and "Hanging On A String" are two of my favorites but they had several hits.

This song brings back so many memories. Summer 1989 this song ruled the R&B charts here in the USA. I noticed in the comments many other British groups were mentioned. However 1 UK group that wasn't mentioned was I Level or Eye Level. Check out their hits " Give Me " from 1982 and " Minefield" from 1984. Real Pioneers of British R&B and Soul.

Soul π Soul was founded by Trevor Beresford Romeo better known as Jazzie B here in the UK, they were massive in the 80's with their Club Classics Album, the lead singer is Caron Wheeler a great singer songwriter herself, I had the pleasure of meeting Jazzie at their merchandise shop in London in the late 80's, so many great tunes for you to listen too

--This group came out at the perfect time.. there was New Jack Swing all over the radio and the beat they used (from Graham Central Station's The Jam) became one of the most used drums of all-time. You will hear it many times in songs like "Tom's Diner" and "Don't Make Me Over". All of those songs ruled the dancefloor from 90-92.

You need the Bristol Sound if you want the English New Wave, Massive Attack and their Unfinished Sympathy or Teardrop or Protection. You need some Portishead, Goldie, or even The Propellorheads with OHMSS or A Little Bit of History Repeating. London acts like Faithless, (Insomnia or God is a DJ) or Everything But the Girl with the Todd Terry remix of Missing. Smooth trance and more importantly, Trip Hop.

Another song with an awesome violin in it is a cover song by Chris Rupp (founder of Home Free with his brother Adam), called Natural, a song by Imagine Dragons. Chris' friend Melissa Priller plays the violin in the video/song with Chris. Chris does the beatboxing in it. I think you'll enjoy that one, since I heard you say a couple times about loving the violin in this song and another one (I admit I don't remember which one.) I enjoy watching your reactions.

I was stationed in the UK back in the late 80’s and early 90’s while I was in the Air Force and this song was huge. Another British R&B name from that era that you should try out is Mica Paris. She had hits like “Breathe Life Into Me” and “My One Temptation”. Both great songs. Her duet with Will Downing on a cover of “Where Is the Love” is a must-listen as well.
