Her first hit, with Rufus -- Tell Me Something Good -- triggered a huge crush. Any guy going through puberty at the time felt it. The song was written for her by Stevie Wonder, and she didn't let him down. It's magnificent.

Whether it's her phrasing, her vocal timbre, her harmonies or sassy syncopated vocal style, she has the 'IT' factor. Also, let's not forget her look, too...her hair, lips and hips help bring her songs to life. Rufus is an American funk band from Chicago, Illinois, best known for launching the career of lead singer Chaka Khan. They had several hits throughout their career, including "Tell Me Something Good", "Sweet Thing", "Do You Love What You Feel" and "Ain't Nobody". Rufus and Chaka Khan were one of the most popular and influential funk bands of the 1970s, with four consecutive number one R&B albums, ten Top 40 pop hits and five number one R&B singles, among other accolades. Paulette McWilliams was the singer for Rufus. She was friends with Chaka Khan. Khan used to go to most of the shows Rufus did. When Paulette decided to leave the band, she recommended Khan and stayed around long enough to teach her the song. Their first album had a couple of songs that got some attention on R&B radio stations, but the album didn't sell very well. Their follow up album - Rags to Rufus was where it kicked off. Rags to Rufus was released in 1974 and two of its singles - the Stevie Wonder-penned "Tell Me Something Good" and the Parker-Khan composition, "You Got the Love" - became smash hits leading to Rags to Rufus going Platinum. They also landed opening spots for the tours of several top stars including Stevie Wonder, Cheech and Chong and the Hues Corporation. "Tell Me Something Good" also brought Rufus their first Grammy Award. In addition, it sold over one million copies, and was awarded a Gold disc by the RIAA on August 9, 1974. Due to Khan's increasing popularity Rufus and ABC started calling the group Rufus featuring Chaka Khan. With this new billing, the band recorded and quickly released their next album, Rufusized in 1974. Another Platinum success, the group entered the top ten again with the funk singles, "Once You Get Started", (penned by Gavin Christopher), "Stop on By", "I'm a Woman", and "Pack'd My Bags" (later sampled for Jody Watley's "Lovin' You So") and "Please Pardon Me (You Remind Me of a Friend)", penned by their friend Brenda Russell. Tell Me Something Good should be the next tune to check out. Stevie Wonder wrote it and taught the band how to play it and it's sooooo damn funky.

I was in the clubs when Chaka Kahn was filling the airwaves, and let me tell you, when those first few notes of Ain't Nobody came out of the speakers, the dance floor filled up! You're right that what makes this work is that combination of power and passion, but also that steady relentless backbeat and the smooth groove, punctuated by her amazing energy. This is a song to play at a wedding reception, when you're ready for your guests to let loose. 40 years later, it still kicks.

Another great reaction, thanks. Rufus are the band, she started out as their vocalist then later went solo, I'm Every Woman' came out around the same time as this. Another great track to check out by her is, 'Clouds', you won't be disappointed.

"Ain't nobody can make me feel this way" is one of the most dope lyrics ever. I heard this song at a Youth center dance in 83 - it was fire then and it is still smoking hot today. Thanks for reacting to it.

Please do "Tell Me Something Good". It shows her when she started, back at the point where the hippy 60's turned into the funky 70's. You'll LOVE it.

Old school greatness. LL Cool J did his own rendition of this song in the mid to late 90's with the same title, it featured on the soundtrack to Beavis & Butt-head do America

"Tell Me Something Good". It's from when she was with the band Rufus (like this song). Have you heard her cover of Prince's "I Feel For You"?

Yes! This has been on my request list for a while now. So glad you guys found it! One of my favourites :). I want to request a few more for next FF. T'pau is an amazing group from the 80's - two twin sisters with incredible vocals. Heart and Soul - and China in Your Hand are their best songs. Also Karyn White with Superwoman - Amber this will BLOW you AWAY. She has such passion and power. And one more for Olivia Newton John. Magic, Twist of Fate, or Hopelessly Devoted to You (from Grease). Much love from Canada!!

T'Pau's singer was a British girl named Carol Decker. There were never any twin sisters singing in that band. Yes, Heart and Soul is a fabulous song.

@@dggydddy59 That was my mistake. The way they shot their videos with the backing vocals - always made me think their were two female lead singers. But watching it back now - I see that I was wrong. I'd still love to see a reaction though.

Ahhh club soda in Montreal, used to sit on the stage cause we lived there, and Chaka Kahn was a staple, she was an amazing lady. Pinheads used to play there too, Darby Mills lead singer, you need more Canadian bands, check out Headpins for female fridays< Robs gonna love the rock, start with "Turn it loud". Lead guitar was from Chilliwack, another band you need to check out, dammmm those Canadians.
