The electric guitar solo on "Running with the Night" was played by Steve Lukather, best known as a member of the rock band Toto. Lukather sat down in the studio and the engineer played the basic tracks of the song, for him to hear for the first time, so he could plan his part. As the music played, he jammed along on his instrument. At the conclusion of the tune, he said to the engineer, "Okay, I'm ready for a take." The producer replied, "That was a take."

A few years ago, Richie re-recorded a bunch of his hits with guest vocalists, one of them was Country superstar Kenny Chesney, when Richie handed him the lyrics to the song that they were recording, Chesney looked at him and said, I don't need the words or the music, I know all your hit songs by heart. Lionel was a big influence on many artists , no matter what their musical preferences were.

This was from the good ol' days, when black artists would take a little R&B, and little rock, and a little pop and crank out a confection that showcased all three. Everything today is so siloed, and unless a hip hop artist samples a song from the past, you just never get this kind of blend anymore. Sad.

The female dancer with Lionel Richie is Debbie Allen, and she was also the choreographer and also is the sister of Phylicia Rashad (Claire from the Cosby show). Another choreographer in this video is the late, great Michael Peter's, who also did the choreography for Michael Jacksons "Beat It" (played as his rival gang member in white) and also did Thriller and even appears in Lionel Richies "Hello" video as the blind woman's dance instructor.... bonus points, he was also a dancer in the video for Pat Benetars "Love is a Battlefield".

The guy with the hat that was popping his arm for the female dancer, that’s the legendary choreographer Micheal Peters, he was known for choreographer for plays, movies, tv shows, tv commercials , but he was really known back in the MTV 80’s for choreography for several epic music videos for Micheal Jackson, Pat Benatar, and others. He also appeared in Lionel Richie’s “Hello” video. If you go back and watch the legendary video for MJ’s “Beat It”, he is the lead “ Gang Member/Dancer” in the white jacket.

Not just Steve Lukather on guitar. Steve walked into the session and told the engineer to cue up the section they wanted the solo in and play it so he could get the feel. After that he told them "Do it again and I'll run through it once before we record". So they did that and when it was done Steve said, "Ok I'm ready to take my 1st crack at it". The engineer came back and said, "We're done. You can go pickup your check. We were rolling and it's good". The album it was on won a grammy. This was the same year Toto won a bunch of grammies for Toto IV.
