What unique and interesting books ! Thanks for putting them on my radar. I keep Spurgeon and the psalms on my nightstand and often read it just before bed.

Kate, I come back to your channel again and again because of the obscure but charming literature you ferret out. 😊 It’s a delight to watch you gush over what you’ve read or what you are excited to read. Your enthusiasm for the quaint and lovely is contagious. Thank you!

Oh, I loved Crossriggs, so thanks for finding & linking that Findlater. I like Hesperus books; my copy of The Moorland Cottage is a Hesperus edition and I just finished a short bio of Eliz Gaskell in the Hesperus "Brief Lives" series. Mrs Blencarrow is on my Victober2024 TBR. Also that Persephone edition has 2 novellas by Oliphant: "The mystery of Mrs Blencarrow" and "Queen Eleanor and Fair Rosamund", so Mrs Blencarrow is even shorter than you think.😊

I’ve been wanting some Scottish Victorian literature so I’m definitely going to be checking out some of these that you mentioned! I Hope you enjoy the Mystery of Mrs. Blencarrow. I feel the same as you do about Margaret Oliphant, some of her books I love and some aren’t quite my thing.

Well my Victober tbr just got bigger! Those books sound very interesting, especially The Green Graves of Balgowrie. I have another book by Hesperus Press and agree their editions are very nicely made. I was adding the books you mentioned to my Goodreads for Victober, and noticed there is an Acting Edition of Charley’s Aunt published by Samuel French. They are a well known publisher of books for actors and acting students. It might be nice for anyone who is going to be reading the play in the special group narration.

Hello dear Kate! Loved the books you shared with us (and so many excellent recommendations!). Fun fact for you: J.M. Barrie wrote a lovely book, "Margaret Ogilvy by her Son J.M. Barrie" in which he shared with his readers that his mother absolutely adored the books written by Robert Louis Stevenson, and actually preferred them over his books! 😄 What an good sport he was, to share this tidbit, and with humor to boot.

Love the "deep cuts" vibe in this book haul. It's a good reminder that the Victorian authors and titles readily available to us today from penguin and other major reprint houses offer only a small glimpse into the world of Victorian literature. Blessings to you and your family.😊

@@StephaniePatterson-jb5it 40 volumes is insane!! What are some Diaries and letter collections that are your favorites?
@StephaniePatterson-jb5it
@StephaniePatterson-jb5it 3 ай бұрын
@@katehowereads Well, Mrs. Gaskell’s letters are among my favorites and I love Stevenson’s letters, but many of my favorites are larger collections or fall outside the Victorian period. I recommend Assassins Cloak edited by Alan Taylor and Sarah Gristwood’s “Secret Voices: A Year of Women’s Diaries.” Both books start at January 1, and the entries may span from the 16th to the 21st century. The Mitfords were wonderful letter writers. I recommend “Letters Between Six Sisters.” Nancy’s letters are collected in “With Love From Nancy” I actually bowed out of a New Year’s Eve party because I knew none of the guests (including me) would be as fascinating Nancy Mitford. There is also a separate collection of the letters of Nancy Mitford and Evelyn Waugh. “Decca” is a collection of Jessica Mitford’s letters and Deborah, the youngest Mitford can be found in a collection called “In Tearing Haste: The Letters of Deborah Mitford and Patrick Leigh Fermor.” In general these collections are edited either by Charlotte Mosley or Artemis Cooper. Every Christmas I read the correspondence between George Sand and Gustave Flaubert. (Simply because that’s the time of year I read it originally.) I have yet to finish a novel by Sand. The collection is edited by Francis Steegmuller and Barbara Bray.
