If you're on Goodreads, you should totally join the Dickensians group if you aren't already a member. We just started our read of Nicholas Nicole Nickleby and are only 9 chapters in. We read and discuss a chapter a day with breaks in between installments.

Barchester Towers is an absolute joy of a book, it's a completely different book to The Warden and it made me fall in love with Trollope. I think I will get that Braddon book too.
@mitzireadsandwrites3 ай бұрын
Oh, good. The Warden was just so short and I'm hoping it's just sort of an intro to the series. I've loved the other Trollopes, so looking forward to it!

I just love seeing your book recommendations especially for this time of year and the Victorian readathon. I have an old hardcover set of Charles Dickens books too! Mine were published by Books Inc. and belonged to my Grandparents and my dear Mom and her brothers. Lucky me the books are mine now cuz no one took ‘em! I’m participating in Victober too. I’m reading and listening to The Doctor’s Wife and will read other books for all the prompts including something for Jennifer and Alice . I like finding authors I didnt know much about before. I learned of a Victorian author you might like, George MacDonald. He was a Scottish author, poet and Christian minister. I found a youtube channel that reads his stories. I’m listening to At the Back of the North Wind for this year’s Victober to read a story that was serialized. This story is geared towards children and full of good morals and wisdom. It fits for Marissa’s challenge as it was serialized. I hope to add some of his physical books to my bookshelves as they have pretty covers too.

Yes! I read At the Back of the North Wind a couple of Victobers ago, but I didn't know about that KZbin channel. I look for it. Have you read The Princess and the Goblin? I just filmed a video recommending that one but I haven't posted it yet. If not, it's a great one!

@@mitzireadsandwrites I’d love to hear more about George MacDonald and At the Back of the Wind and will look for your older video as I just started this story. I’m going to reread The Princess and the Goblin, as I dont quite remember it, and then read The Princess and Curdie for the first time. Im definitely looking forward to your thoughts on The Princess and the Goblin. So far I really enjoy his writing. I hope you are enjoying this Victober and all your wonderful books!

A great Victorian novel that plays with form is Dickens’ “Bleak House” - two intertwining narratives (one a present-tense omniscient, the other a past-tense first-person). It’s my favorite Dickens. Also, if you want a really good film version of an Oscar Wilde play, by all means watch the 1952 “The Importance of Being Ernest” directed by Anthony Asquith. Edith Evans is the quintessential Lady Bracknell. (“A hand ba-a-ag?”)

Such a beautiful library🥰. I read A Tale of Two Cities in high school and have been wanting to reread it for awhile now. I know exactly what you mean about Kate’s intro. I actually tear up the first time I hear it. I love it so much. The only book I have planned for sure this year is a reread of The Picture of Dorian Gray. There’s going to be more, possibly another Hardy as I’m growing to love him. I also love Dickens so he’s a firm possibility too. I would also like to read a book or story for Jennifer and Alice.

I was already planning on reading Dracula fir thenfirst time in October and I realized that it fits in to Victober. I might also add in a Study in Scarlet since I want to read some Holmes. My dad was a huge Holmes fan, and was part of a group called the Southdowners. They meet once a month to read and discuss Holmes books and Holmes inspired books. October is also when my dad passed away, so it looks like it will be a away, so I hope to add it to my TBR for him.

Did you want to buddy read Marion Fay by Trollope? If you are still interested we could move it to November since trying to do the prompts fills up October pretty quickly! I do think it was serialized so it could fill that prompt but it is a lesser known work that doesn’t fill any other prompt and with both the group read and the extras for Jenny and Alice, it seems like a good idea to put it off to Nov or Dec.
