Translation: The village which was drought-prone from 1972-1989 having an average rainfall of mere 200-300 millimeter and because of that there was hunger, poverty, unemployment, lack of quality education as there was no water and no irrigation, because of that villagers started to migrate to the city in hope of better life. And those who were living in the village had only one source of income, local liquor manufacturing (moonshine, vine). What they did was drinking, and fighting. It became kind of punishment for government employees to be posted here in our village. Because of that, government schemes were not coming in our village. Situations of village were so dire that I myself left the village for my studies. I completed my Masters in Commerce, I played cricket 2 times on national levels from Pune University. Played state level, also in Pune and Mumbai, there was bright career ahead of me, but in 1989 when I visited my village, I saw the condition of my village, my entire family opposed me, they said to focus on my own career rather than the career of the village. But that didn't stop me, I remembered my childhood, women and youth supported me and I became the Sarpanch(head of the village). We started from seven points of development, those were baning tree cutting, donation of labor, ban on open defecation, family planning, ban on liquor, ban on open grazing, groundwater management. With these, we worked on projects to conserve soil and water. It brought the air of change in the village. Villagers started producing cash crops and per capita income of villagers increased from just Rs. 800($12) to Rs. 30000($450 plus) and it became the village with the highest GDP in the entire country. When this happened, then people who left village started to come back again to the village. 112 families left Mumbai, Pune, Thane and returned to Hiware Bazaar(Name of the village.). Friends, you will be surprised to know that in Mumbai per capita water consumption is 300 liters. 50 families from Mumbai returned to the village and we saved 200,000 liters of Mumbai water(it was light-hearted pun by the speaker). If every village becomes self-sufficient then we can build a strong India. Now one village becomes the development model for the nation, we want to make 5 villages like this in every district of Maharashtra(Western state of India). Not only this, village development authority of India announced that they will clone the exact leadership and development model of our village and implement in 100 more villages in the whole country. Representatives of 112 nations visited our village to study our development model. There was a time when people were leaving our village as there was no food and job security but today migratory birds from South Africa visit our village. We created one village with the abundance of water and clean environment. Poverty is nowhere to be seen now in our village. We developed the dairy sector, started taking cash crops and like that our village became an example for the nation. There is only one Muslim family in our village and villagers decided to build a mosque for that single family, similarly, we built a church, the temple for Buddhist. We all came together, we worked on water management, crop management and now there is no fight between us. There was a one time when our village was blacklisted in police dairy but today we don't need police in our village. There are incidents of dengue in cities like Mumbai but we challenged anyone to find a single mosquito in our village and get a reward of Rs. 100. Today there is a problem of bridging the void between villages and cities and if we can solve it then we will be able to create the powerful nation of which our Bapu(Mahatma Gandhi) once envisioned of. With that thought in mind, I finish my story. Namaskar. :)
