In this video we take a trip to Brixton and check out the house where I was born. We also look around Brixton Market, Electric Avenue and see how it has changed since I left there in 1974. We also taste some Jamacan Patties.
Hope you enjoy the video.

That was brilliant. My dad came from Brixton and I was born in Wandsworth where my mum was from. My grandad was a second hand car salesman in Brixton. They lived in Wooley House (not sure of spelling) one of several high rise flats but they have all been knocked down now. I used to go there every other weekend. You may well have seen my grandad Tom many times along those streets. He was also a doorman for the Canadian Embassy when he retired from the motor trade. He looked like a real wide boy in his big heavy double breasted coat and his suits and ties. I so enjoyed your video. Also the pie and mash one was great. We would go to nans and someone would go to the pie and mash shop with a jug for the liquor and a bowl for the lumpy mash and then we would all tuck in back at nans house. Only ever one pie though!!!!!

Martin, that was a fascinating insight into your birth and childhood. Some of your childhood thoughts you shared were quitre profuond. My own birthplace was in a hospital but my mum still lives in the same house where I grew up (my dad passed away in 2017). The secondary school I went to has gone although there is another school building on the site these days. These days, I feel like a stranger in the city of my birth so I can see where you're coming from with all the changes since you moved away.

Wow just found this video, I watch your cooking ones, you took me back to a lot of memories ,I didnt live in Brixton, but I worked there, loads of memories, one of them was where we went into the beehive club and met Michael Caine and the cast of Alfie, brilliant the pub scene was a derelict pub but one bit done up to film, I am 8 years older than you so things might have been a little different, thank you.

I’ve still got a circular gilded mirror and a sewing box my parents bought in Bon Marche in the late 50s - I was about 7 or 8 and it was a big treat to ride up the escalator. My mum used to take me there to see Santa. We lived in Herne Hill near Brockwell Park and left in 1963. I have the most wonderful memories!

Brickwell park! We used to do rolypoly's down the hill near the restaurant. Another great memory was a cafe opposite the park that did pork dripping on crusty bread for a penny and beef for a penny halfpenny with lovely jelly on top! Used to nip out to there from effra junior school and eat it at lunch time in preference to school dinners, oh joy!

I was trying to remember where the pie and mash shop was but I can't remember.talking of pie and mash when I was younger I used to work part time Saturdays and school holidays, so now at the age of 65 I make my own pie mash and liquor so at some point send a frozen parcel to you both after I have had my eye op in July cheers lovely people . Martin, I was born in Edgware and when learning to drive in 64, on our way down to the coast with my Mum and Dad in the mid 1960's we used to drive past Pride and Clarkes motorcycle shop. I wondered what happened to that red building years later. London has changed so much. I know the area of Lincolnshire where you live because we moved out of London in 1971 to South Cambs. @@butlersempire that’s a shame about the pie and mash shop, so although I can’t see any of my children or grandchildren eating it nowadays. I really enjoyed your video although I never recognised much. I had completely forgotten the arcades. Love your cooking videos as well. Keep up the good work. I’ve lived in Scotland for past 50 years but you brought back good memories.

If you had turned left at electric ave the entrance to the market (one of) is on the left, I grew up in Tulse Hill at the same time as you.👍🏻 Great memories.

I was born in 63 so probably had the same teachers. I remember Mr Mottram and Mr Schuler, Mrs Harris used to play the piano at assembly.

Bloodyhell Martin! Very nostalgic! You’re a south Londoner like me! Spent my childhood (in the 80s)just off kings avenue (other side of Brixton prison)! Used to cut through the prison to Brixton hill and catch the 159 down to Brixton!

you missed pop brixton and Brixton Village (the arcades - which you mentioned was probably that but you looked at the train station entranc)e - the arcades entrance would have been just a little further up (there is also now a theatre where the old firestation was) Its amazing

I’m from east London and although I’m proud of where I was raised I’d never move back. It’s a shame as my childhood memories are there. Must be great getting back to Lincolnshire from Brixton 😂
