A Visit to The Perimeter Mall

It’s always nice to see a high end mall, but this channel continues to bring us those “never knew that mall existed” type of places while others have fallen off due to lack of time or interest. Like a Johnson Smith Catalog, but for malls!😂

Growing up, I remember that every Christmas they had a poinsettia tree that went up to the second floor. It's one of my favorite mall/Christmas memories.

I didn't know until now that Perimeter Mall was built by Rouse! I suppose the significant renovation (that I'm not a huge fan of either) is probably what made this mall unsuspecting. But yes, there are still very slight Rouse elements left in this mall, such as the skylights. Another awesome video!

I was there for that 1990 shooting. I worked at Brentano’s Bookstore and we herded all our customers into the storage room area. And he didn’t surrender to police. A group of 4 people heroically disarmed the guy using a metal table and were in the process of basically beating him to death when the police showed up. I actually saw the guy walk past our side entrance (I can still see it in my minds eye) and remember how he had this weird plodding but determined gait. Like he was walking into a strong wind or something. Anyway, I went back to the register and it sounded like firecrackers, but I’m from the South and was raised around firearms. I knew what it was. Then people started screaming. I’m a psychiatrist now, ex Air Force. Ended up seeing a lot of other things…

I enjoy your mall segments. This mall was just as u stated. It has the typical stores an food court stores that I see in malls today. Nothing says difference as I looked around the video. It was busy which is ok. Malls need the business. I prefer lesser crowds so I shop soon a mall opens that way I’m gone before it gets too busy. Another great video 😀👍

Perimeter Mall is a favorite of many people I know in Atlanta and I can understand why! You get the better than average stores without dealing with the pretentiousness of Lenox Square and you get an indoor mall environment as opposed to going to Avalon in Alpharetta. Perimeter is really a retail gem! I didn't know about the gun incident just THIS year. Dang.... I also hate the sentiment that "all malls are dying". That's far from the truth and a phrase that people uneducated with the field just love to spill out. Great video Doomie! Could we perhaps get Mall of Georgia and Town Center at Cobb next?

Malls have little to offer these days. Bring back the arcades, movie theaters, good restaurants in a food court (not that cheap, disgusting Chinese food or subpar pizza), clothing stores with good quality clothing where a shirt doesn't cost you nearly a hundred dollars, as well as fountains, neat architectural design, toy stores, book stores, candy stores, live entertainment, a carousel, music stores, etc. The mall in current times are either ghetto catering to the "urban crowd", or they are too expensive to buy anything worthwhile and are just a waste of time unless you are doing daily exercise there for your health. Also get rid of the kiosks where the salesmen harass you to buy something, taking up walking space. And make sure that the "urban youth" stop congregating around the entrances of malls and actually arrest the hoodlums if they fight. If you do all that, the mall will gain more customers.

@@willp.8120 Mall of Georgia has exactly everything you just named minus the music store. Some kiosks are cool but yes I definitely agree about the harassing salesmen. It’s always those shoe guys trying to get you to buy their shoe cleaner product.

Davison's was a divison of the Macy company. In 1986, Macy's retired the Davison name (as well as Bambergers in NJ and Pa.

Oh, the people saying all malls are dead probably don’t live in a market with a concentration of middle to high income levels. Atlanta has a lot of retail excess, also a lot of crime and dead retail in the mix. But, people up north are still moving to Atlanta and the southeast… at least the ones that can afford it.

I worked at so many stores there in the 2000s! Some at the same time. Would finish a shift at one and go to the other without even walking outside. Nordstrom cafe had some yummy lunch break food!

This mall has such good stores! No wonder it’s doing so well. Chesterfield Towne Center in Chesterfield, VA had a shooting but is still thriving same with Northwoods Mall in N Charleston, SC. I like this mall and I don’t mind crowds.

I grew up going to Perimeter Mall with my parents in the 70’s. It was magical to me. I loved all the fountains and they had kiosks where you could buy candy that was displayed in clear cases. The best was Christmas where we’d go to see the “real” Santa. The display was incredible and had Santa’s sleigh with all of the reindeer suspended going up like they were flying. Glad to see this mall is still doing well. I hate the outdoor shopping areas!

l live about 3 1/2 hours east of Atlanta, which in general has a crime, and theft issue, and it's only gotten worse since the early 00's. My sister lived in the area in the area in the early - mid 00's, and it's part of the reason her and her now ex moved out of the state, and to Texas(she's moved back home to my area since), and here is a very good reason Atlanta is expanding their police, and first responder training facilities. Also my better 1/2 has some family in the area, and the few times we go see them, we stay away from the mall, as we feel it's best to not risk it.

I grew up in this area and graduated high school in the early early 1980s. I escaped… I mean… moved and haven’t been back since 1982. Lol. Perimeter Mall used to be Where are the high school kids went to hang out. I thought it was an atrocious place and very pretentious. It looks as if it still is. I Hated growing up in Dunwoody, back then it was very snooty and conceited place, probably still is . The mall looks good though… I don’t recognize it at all from this video… I do remember the movie theater, I think it had 2 theaters inside. It was not inside of the mall. It was outside closer to the street. Is it still there? I did not watch the entire video I will admit.. the mall has been Definitely tweaked and upgraded it in the past 40 years. Glad it survived.

Guess I have unpopular opinions as well because I tend to agree with most of what was said here and to be honest, people going out and pulling firearms in public places isnt just an affliction this mall suffers alone- its all over so theres really no getting away from it unless you want to move to a place without a dense population.

Davison's was owned by Macy's for 60 years before being rebranded. An image search showed Perimter's original brick flooring uncovered in a recent renovation. Cumberland has had food fights and gun problems as well. Malls can sruvive the biggest problem in my opinion is malls aren't stocked as well as the new open air outlets. North point and Avalon is a prime example. I hate Avalon, pay to park, walk arouind in the elements, crossing the street to get to another shop.

It’s a nice mall but you have to take a very congested part of I-285 to get to it and parking isn’t good. If you don’t like traffic you won’t like this mall.

Brother, you could be right. Because having fountains and trees greatly helps to make a mall a pleasant place to be, and not just for shopping. And fountains and trees help make malls distinct from each other, in the way that the fountains and trees are laid out. My local mall took out the fountains and trees, and I suggested at the mall office that they restore both. I was told that the trees hinder people from seeing the names of the stores. I thought, really? I wonder if some mall owners are getting short sighted, ultimately because of greed.

This mall was one of the 1st to have a mass shooting in the food court 8 killed I lived in Atlanta for 30 years and to witness the spiraling downfall is heartbreaking

Malls can thrive but most will fail for all the obvious reasons. They are like countries. If they are homogenous and dont look like cultural melting pots, they have a chance. This mall only has a few pockets of white customers so for the most part its a cultural unified mall because the old school customers have been scared away. Once they are totally pushed away, the occasional shooting will be accepted as part of cultural mall life. Its like living in Chicago. Do the stores thrive ? Maybe but credit cards will be even more valuable or else no way. If you remember when malls used to thrive elsewhere, it was based on the old homogenous culture which is now dead because they are being taken over and pushed away so they just leave and shop online. The modern day mall in America is just like its modern culture. The old way is being extinguished and the ne way is on full display in Atlanta where the crowds will continue to grow but the economics will be shaky. The best way to understand things is look at the economics of farming in pre and post 1980 Zimbabwe. Happy Shopping !!

It is absolutely amazing how so many blacks have taken over indoor malls, even in areas, such as where Perimeter Mall is located, where the majority is absolutely white in its proximity. It has a MARTA train station, however, that is right beside the mall, so this accounts for some of it.

Yup I noticed a lot of black folks at this mall,Atlanta has a high black population where I am from in southern California they are a small minority, but we have a lot of Mexicans 😅 im a Mexican mixed with Spanish and German

I don't like this mall but the only things that are good about this are lots of good stores to shop at IMO and a very busy mall. Better busy than dead no matter if the mall is vintage or modern.😊🖤

Even in a bustling mall like this, there's still closed stores which was a rarity back in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, early 2000s during their heyday... So I'll say yeah malls are definitely still dead if you compare to those decades and looks like this one is about to go out in it's way soon it's only a matter of time...
