Man this mall has changed so much, I really don't recognize it anymore. My parents used to go to this mall often when I was little, I remember spending a lot of time in the Aladdin's Castle on the corner where it seems an H&M has taken over now. The movie theater across from that Aladdin's Castle is long gone, the original C shaped food court from the 80s with the dairy queen is gone. Just looks so generic and bleached to hell now. The layout changed enough that I had to look at the malls website get a better understanding of what all has been done since the 1980s. I haven't been to Harrisonburg in almost 25 years now. Seems a lot has changed lol

The worst thing they did to this place was get rid of that awesome food court and the FYE.

I would come to this mall on occasion when I lived in VA. It always seemed like it was adept at shuffling things around to minimize the impact of a store closure. Haven't been there since before "it" started last year, so I'm sure it's feeling the heat now.

I miss the colors malls used to have in them. Everything is so...sterile now whenever malls get remodeled. My local mall since childhood barely resembles the place I remember being able to spend half a day at, going from store to store, eating at the food court, etc...

Some history on this mall: the books a million used to be across the street before they moved to the mall and Spencers used to be right in the front when you walked in, where the ultra beauty is now. Source: my childhood memory

Looks like a fairly healthy mall, it is strange that the corridor ends abruptly past Belk. I guess that is where the Target is located. The Dick's Sporting Goods anchors are becoming just another clothing retailer since they are cutting their hunting and fishing departments down to nothing.

You're not alone; there is NOTHING I hate more than minimalism. I actually thought I was alone in my distaste for minimalism until I heard you discuss it previously in your Towson Town Center video.

I guess at age 58 I sort of like this mall because it reminds me of the magic of the 1970s. I live in Virginia too. Don't worry though. Malls will make a comeback in ten or twenty years. Fashions, exercise crazes, housing styles, and just about everything on this planet are cyclical anyway.

Hope to take a trip up that way soon. Got a new phone so i should have a tanglewood mall update soon.

It's sad that ALL malls in the USA have small to tiny emity store fronts and even other parts of the malls today can't add new Customes to enter those small to tiny shops! If you have that many small to tiny emity store fronts, make or combined each store to a med to large store on each mall! That a smarter ideal!

Simon DID have ownership on this one during the 2000s when the Walmart and Food Court were torn down. Macerich took over early 2010s and there are a bunch of stores gone now (2023). PacSun, Yankee Candle, Hollister, Zales and Victorias Secret at the least have all left.

I like the floors alright but they could have done more with the ceilings. They didn't do anything special with it. That is why is looks so bland. Looks like there aren't many empty spaces

Retail sales posted its 3rd monthly decline today. If you aren't Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowes, or Amazon you are getting crushed. I expect a another wave of store closings. Maybe we will see a climax this year and things will level out

Why are the ceilings so high

I would have to disagree with you about the architecture as I love that the designer of the mall added windows up above, as most malls built in the 1980s, did not have such designs, and especially smaller older malls that are one level. One leval malls don't always do well as multi level malls, but this one seems to be filled with many stores. Manor East Mall in Bryan, Texas was the oldest mall built in the mid 1960s, then added on the late 1970s, another section for a movie threater, added some more stores, and a Walmart added as an anchore store. Sadly Walmart moved out and years later the mall was torn down for a new shopping center. Manor East Mall had very interesting architecture as I wrote a letter in the Bryan Eagle News paper about how much I appreciated the architectural design of the mall.
