Welcome to Maine, ladies & gentlemen. And to kick off, we'll start with two little micro malls in the rural reaches of the state: The Windham Mall and the Turnpike Mall. Let's go mall walking!

Was so awesome that you did these small malls in Maine. I am from here and have been to Turnpike Mall many times before. Sad to see it the way it is now. There is all kinds of dead retail where I am at. Glad to see someone come up to show how things are. Great video!

The Windham Mall being cut off the way it was is ridiculous. I am glad there are some quirky businesses still surviving there. That little mall entrance to the Sears at the Turnpike Mall is hilarious. There are not a lot of malls like that one still around.

ALL strip malls should be built like the Turnpike Mall, where you enter your store by entering a glass enclosed corridor first (then there's no need for vestibules either).

I’ve been to Windham many times but never knew there was an inclosed section of the mall. Great video. I’m excited for the Bangor and Maine Mall videos.

Why is it that between 1979-1981 so many malls were built in these small towns of under 20,000 people. Many of these are in North Carolina, Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Maine. I need answers 😂

As Aimee Webber said, the mall was huge back in the 70s, 80s, and even into the 90, with everyone and their mom wanting the mall. Think of it like Facebook, but more civil and fewer privacy violations.

Doomie Grunt - Dead Malls & Derelict Digs I agree, there were hundreds of malls built in the 70s and 80s and 90s. Most malls in Texas still do well, they usually close because of competition or crime rather than online shopping.

Good job. My local mail in Eastern CT I fear does not have much time left. Simon basically has left it to rot.

I was just at the Turnpike Mall this weekend. The only store left in the mall is Petco. The AAA is closed. The book stand is still there. At the right end of the mall there's a Harbor freight with no internal access.

I've been to the Reny's in Windham at least a dozen times, yet never knew there were mall remnants behind it. :/

I remember Zayre - like you said history. Not that missed, it was a step down from Kmart. In a sense it still survives as BJ's wholesale Club - literally the Sam's Club of the decfunct Zayre.

Check out Shaw's plaza in Windham Maine, it's a great corridor strip, better than the Windham Mall in my opinion, since Marshalls ruined it in 2007!

😆 Wind-um. Pizza Hut is no longer there and new building is being put in its place. Walmart across the street didn't help business either. Never even heard of the turnpike mall but then again I'm a southern Maine girl.
