I went to university in Bangor, Wales. In English, people say it much like how it is clearly mispronounced in America, but in Welsh it sounds more similar to the 'proper' pronunciation of the US city (it's spelt the same in Welsh as in English). Very interesting! I think the reason only a few people say it like the city in Maine is that it sounds too much like you're trying to speak Welsh but can't hahaha! Fascinating!
@andrewr27578 жыл бұрын
Points out though Bangor Maine was named after a song, and not Bangor in Wales "Accounts vary on how many settlers were at the plantation -- some sources say there were as many as 576 while most others say there were between 200 and 300 -- but in 1791 the settlers decided to incorporate themselves as a town. Because Maine was part of Massachusetts at the time, the settlers had to petition the Massachusetts General Court to become incorporated. The Rev. Seth Noble, who had arrived in 1786 from Wakefield, Mass., convinced his neighbors they should call their town Sunbury. Noble’s neighbors gave him the task of going to Boston to deliver the town's petition. While waiting to present the petition in Boston, Noble -- an organist and composer -- began whistling one of his favorite tunes: "Bangor," a Welsh hymn written by Tans'ur. In Welsh, "Bangor" means "high choir." In Celtic, "Bangor" means "the white choir."" - Source Bangor Maine's website
@SallycrosbyUk8 жыл бұрын
Ok! I don't much about the place in Maine, I've never been to America. In modern Welsh though, Bangor does not mean 'high choir'. I'm fluent!
@SallycrosbyUk8 жыл бұрын
'high choir' would be 'côr uchel'. It's possibly some seriously old Welsh in some way, sure! :) as is the way with lots of place names tbf, eh :)
@SallycrosbyUk8 жыл бұрын
Bangori means 'wattle' in English so basically an old fence that surrounded the monastery that built the city. The 'i's been lost. There's still big metal fences the whole way around now!! The city was founded in the 6th century when a load of monks set up shop there :D that might be where you got the choir bit from :) They would sing there! I had an early music lecture in the cathedral. There's a bit just for singing! I don't know if there's a name for that, but there's a bit inside the cathedral with sort of pews just for singing. It's a square with pews on all four sides and everyone looking in on each other if you get me. Amazing acoustics unsurprisingly. I have to say that was one of the coolest lectures, learning about the history of the place whilst being inside it. A bit like being in a museum except the tour guide hasn't been there 2 months but is a university professor specialising in the subject :D if you catch my drift!
@SallycrosbyUk8 жыл бұрын
I'm not gonna lie, I didn't know the word 'Bangori' or the word 'wattle' but I read the history of the place in Welsh so I'd get the most accurate information as that is the first language of 80% of the population there ^_^

The thing is though, Bangor, Maine wasn't named after the one in Wales! Its name comes from a tune by English composer William Tans'ur. Contrary to popular belief, the hymn tune “Bangor” doesn’t honor Bangor, Northern Ireland, or Bangor, Wales. It marked an attempt by Tans’ur to honor the British Isles in general.
