I wished I had continue my education pursuit in Civil Engineering 20 (Transportation). I didn't, I'm retired now so it doesn't matter. Would LOVE to have been involved in development and planning of mass transit based on a zillion plans I devised growing up since 10 years old. The pages could have filled an entire house.

It's definitely gonna cost A LOT of money but I'm tired of driving here. Hours in traffic, parking tickets, parking meters, street sweeping, parking, parking, parking! I'm giving my car away to a family member. LA can't continue to grow and continue to rely on cars too.

That's exactly why I decided against moving to L.A. I was living in Atlanta and had job offers in both L.A. & [Washington] D.C. When I was there [in L.A.] for the interview, I had to deal with the chaos at LAX, then having to rent a car, then having to pay for parking at my hotel (which was like $48 a night), then having to sit in traffic for nearly 2 hours just to get from my LAX-area hotel to downtown, then having to pay $15 to park in a garage for approximately 2 hours because I was about to be late for the interview and didn't have time to spare for looking for a parking spot on the street, just to sit in traffic for another hour & a half on my way back to the hotel after the interview. I wanted to go to the beach during my visit, but after all of the driving, I was exhausted and only had enough time to prepare for my flight back east. My interview in D.C. was the complete opposite--I purchased a SmarTrip card (for $1), hopped on the train which dropped me off a block from my hotel (it only cost me $2.25 for the one-way trip), took the D.C. Circulator ($1) to my interview and back to my hotel, before taking the Metro back to the airport the next day (another $2.25) and flying home. It is safe to say that I chose the D.C. job simply because of the transit. I love L.A. and all, it is a beautiful city and I would love to live somewhere I could go to the beach on the weekends, but I just couldn't see myself having to deal with the traffic every day on my regular routine (which is part of the reason I left Atlanta).

Jermaine Sam says: "It's definitely gonna cost A LOT of money but I'm tired of driving here....." == kzbin.info/www/bejne/pl6saXp6oNGmhJY It didn't just happened to be that way. Someone who wanted to make money made it that way. We, as tax payers are paying a lot more money to make roads than making railways even if you don't drive. Gas tax and all other requirements hardly pay anything. Can you guess who made it that way? Are you surprised, it was automobile industry?

Thank you for the vid. I hope I live long enough to see the Orange line become a rail. And I'm glad thy are going to letters instead of colors (Orange buses are grey. Huh?) I live in the SFV, Encino 4 blocks from the Orange Line. Back when the old Santa Fe rail line was going to be made light rail I lived in Tarzana, 1 block from the line. All along the rail line residents wanted light rail (heck most of us voted for a monorail run by a 3rd party which would give a portion to the City but the City blew it off). Because of a small yet vocal group of Orthodox Jews (I'm a Jew too so don't start throwing stones at me) who insisted a light rail would be dangerous on Sabbath and so pushed for a bus line, here we are today, spending more money to put what should have been built in the first place.

That third party was the Alweg group, maker of the Disneyland monorail and the 1962 Seattle Worlds Fair, their only non-domestic sales. Our city council blew it back in the early 60's. That monorail system, if measured by progress and ticket receipts, I'm sure would be a world class transit network with multiple city to valley routes, beach routes, anywhere they could get already established rights of way to avoid busting up existing infrastructure. The city REALLY blew it. I, too was in Tarzana during those days...just a tad further south near the 101.

There also seems to be an insanity regarding the proposal of a light rail line on Vermont . This street is one of the most heavily used thoroughfares in Los Angeles, and for the most part, is not wide enough to have a dedicated light rail line along with the local bus lines and normal commercial traffic not to mention private vehicle traffic. This is another location that requires subsurface heavy rail. Yet LAMetro still exhibits the Hubris to declare that only their way will work.
@PASH3227
@PASH3227 6 ай бұрын
I think it would work at the portion of Vermont with the wide median in the middle of the street (south of Gage). But North of Gage, where it gets narrower I'd agree that it should be an underground light rail or subway. Business and neighborhood interests along Vermont, especially Koreatown and USC, should be pushing for an acceleration of the Vermont BRT project AND possibly building a new subway on Vermont.

Great job man. Wow. I'm a certified armchair urban transit planner and have been since I was a child. I even got a commendation letter from Mayor Sam Yorty back in the mid 60's for my redesign of the LAX airport loop, VERY VERY close to what it looks like today. No credit other than that commendation letter. You did an awesome job on that video and should be commended by Sam Yorty too .. or at least whomever is the current mayor? Garcetti's kid? OK. Anyway, you wanted us to point out some spelling errors, which you caught on one but missed PACOIMA up in the northeastern part of the San Fernando Valley. Minor error on an otherwise STELLAR production. I've retired and moved to the Philippines but sure miss L.A. transit plans. Living in Manhattan Beach most of my adult life, sure miss that place too. I never understood why they built green line and never connected to airport. these new lines should have been built in the early 90s not 2017 and beyond. the county really had poor leadership over the last 4 decades, now they want to raise sales tax again to rush these projects thru before 2057?!? the sales and gas tax is already really high!
@chromebomb
@chromebomb 7 жыл бұрын
The Green Line never connected to LAX in the 90s because of politics. The Federal govt wanted to give Metro(RTD) $$$ for rail in the 70s but the public wouldn't vote to raise the taxes so they didn't pay up. Not until Prop A was approved in 1980 that rail could be built, and it faced a huge backlash due to construction disruptions, cost overruns and LA county people are scarred of non cars. Metro or LA county never had any money to build "these new lines in the 90s" let alone today. The only way to fund this stuff is thru a sales tax increase. I would argue that the sales tax is too high but the gas tax isn't because it hasn't been raised in 20+ years and doesn't even come close to paying for 1/2 the cost or maintaining the roads/highways. If the gas tax had been raised there might not be such a need for this new sales tax increase (measure M).

Well the cab drivers and shuttle bus operators didn’t want LARTD cutting into their game so they lobbied to keep the green line out of LAX. RTD in turn chose to route the line to serve the employees commuting to work at LAX as well as the aerospace industry that existed in the South Bay. It would have been a smartish choice too had it not been for the end of the Cold War while the line was under construction, which hit the South Bay area hard.
@Supreme56Animation
@Supreme56Animation 5 жыл бұрын
The Green Line could not connect due to opposition from taxi companies. That shouldn’t have derailed it, but then they withdrew it because it would’ve run by the end of the runway, and the overhead lines could’ve caused crashes, as well as the fact that they believed a connection to the industrial South Bay was more valuable than a connection LAX. There is a route running along the planned route now, for use by the Crenshaw/LAX Line, but it is a tunnel, not a bridge.

That diagonal route seen at 3:22 looks like it follows the old right of way used long ago by the Pacific Electric system which also ran to Santa Ana. Down in Orange County they are actually doing their share too with plans to begin building a light rail running from the Amtrak/Metrolink station passing through downtown then passing through the spot where the old Pacific Electric train once ended. From there it will travel up the same right of way diagonal that LA has and unfortunately for now at least end at Harbor Blvd in Garden Grove. That leaves 13 1/2 miles of the right of way diagonal still to go to join what LA plans. Both sides better get on the same page and ensure their trains are conpatible to travel in each others system. And thanks to lithium batteries can't they build a train that can be off the wire for 4-5 miles? That would allow a train to continue from Santa Ana to Irvine or Orange.

I'm still in my 20s and I take the 405 everyday to work. You're right, even then I might be dead by the time I get to enjoy the Sepulveda line :'(. I say we focus on the most heavily congested areas with full force and cut back on some of the lighter projects like Montclair. I mean they're not even L.A. and I've only been hearing bad things coming from San Bernardino in the news lately. Anyway, the end goal seems great! However I personally don't think it's practical to run so many construction projects simultaneously if you're saying that budget affects completion date. My recommendation is to focus first on Sepulveda, Hollywood to Westside and LAX. I drive around L.A. a lot and sometimes it takes me 30 minutes to drive a mile or two just to get onto the freeway in those areas.

the gateway cities route was planned before they built the 105 freeway and the gold line. where the 105 goes through the north end of paramount there was a rail line already in place but the freeway was built in place of it without any future possibilities and now they have to get the okay rom the ports of Long Beach and L.A. to use the trackage

KZbin flagged the music I was using, unfortunately (Wall-E and Ocean's 11, as others have pointed out), which puts ads on it and restricts playback. I probably should've used something more obscure so it wouldn't get flagged.

I'm glad it passed, even though I may not be around to see it all completed. I was looking at the No on Measure M site. I guess they're not happy. The problem with their argument is doing nothing is not an option. It's not perfect (nothing is) but we must do something. We're already far behind when compared to many of the world's major cities and how they tackle transportation issues.

In some cases, yes. But much depends on additional federal funding. LA Metro got almost $1 billion in federal funding for construction of the SFV LRT line and to help finish the D subway line before the 2028 Olympics. In another case, they divided the project into two phases instead of the original single phase. That way they can build the majority of the line, and build the 2nd phase when they have additional funds. So it's faster, but you might not get the whole enchilada.

Also not pictured: 1. Political influences on the routes, schedule, contractor selection and key employee selection. 2. Government ineptitude in all it does. 3. Corruption rerouting funds to ??? 4. State and federal mandates rerouting funds to ??? 5. Usual cost overruns doubling or tripling the cost to taxpayers. 6. Interest and fees " " " " " " " ... that is the #5 cost, not the originally predicted cost. 7. Usual rescheduling doubling or tripling the time required to complete.. Parts will never be completed. Moral: Let private industry sell bonds and construct the > best < methods of transport for each type of travel. "Best" = selected by market demand and bought with funds obtained through cooperative, not extorted means (taxation).
