A walk around Cramond Village | Edinburgh

In this weeks Edinburgh Vlog we take a trip out to Cramond Village. We see the Firth of Forth, Cramond island - which you can't get to when the tide is in. We also take a little walk along the coast, and a look at the boats. After that we go to Cramond Kirk and accidentally discover where the earliest settlers were in Scotland, and the remains of an Actual Roman Fort. Real Archeology.

i grew up 15 mins walk from cramond was our playground as kids, my dad was from darlington, and was posted up to edinburgh during second world war, to guard the forth road bridge and surrounding area, he was a gunner. he met my mother at a dance in leith and after the war he stayed in edinburgh, working for most of his life in the city chambers. so fond memories of cramond, river almond during the summer swimming above the waterfall etc, fantastic childhood growing up with all that there.

My local Village walk up river to Cramond Bridge is nice lots to see and further up river and across to Cammo is well worth a look , i live local the river is one of my fave walks

Just came across your videos and I am a recent subscriber. Played this one and was absolutely super excited, definitely shared your excitement of finding the Roman ruins! I had been to Edinburgh and through a portion of England and Scotland several decades ago ( my how time flies). During that trip, we came across Hadrian’s Wall and when I realized what it was I about lost my mind! As an American, I’m hoping to get back to Britain within the year. I very much enjoy your videos! Always wanted to be an archaeologist since childhood. Maybe the next time around!

Your excitement is truly infectious! If you had headed along the river Almond walkway for another few minutes you would have stumbled upon a waterfall and the ruins of a old 18th century mill. There is an annex to the Kirk besides the roman fort that Cramond primary school used to use for primary 5 and 6 in the early 70's so I was there every day for 2 years. The Kirk has been around since the 1650's and is well worth a look inside. I have fond memories of being marched down there from school through the 60's. I'm surprised you didn't see the hordes of bunnies that live around there (there's hundreds of them!) When you get a chance go back, there is still a ton of stuff to see!

Tony you’ve got to come south of the border, up to Hadrians wall. Around Corbridge you can get up onto the wall and there are so many things like Housesteads fort. You can see the remains of heating systems, bath houses etc. Another great video, keep up the good work!

That is Barnbougle castle, on Rosebery estate. The cottage was the ferrymans hoose between cramond and queensferry. If you keep walking up the river you will eventually reach the old cramond brig. When I were a lad we would go camping and fishing on cramond island. Caught my first plaice on an incoming tide, on the sand flats. Cooked it in butter and milk mmm.. ~The walkway was a very slippery sewerage pipeline. The pub became a bikers pub in the 70s when the Weigh Inn in Leith shut down, along with the Barnton hotel and the Cramond brig. The Fountain bar was above the shops at Barnton. Wild place.

It's such a shame the ferry to cramond from dalmeny got stopped. You could walk from dalmeny station along the coast and jump on the ferry to cramond. Now you have to do a massive walk around the river to get to cramond. Hope they get a bridge or ferry put in one day

Hi Tony what a fantastic video , we have a place that is only assessed when the tide is out it’s called worms head in South Wales it’s in the Gower peninsular and loads of people have been cut off too lol 😂. Love your enthusiasm Tony ! , it truly is mind-blowing that settlements in Cramond go back over 10,000 years. You can walk up the river Almond all the way to the Eastern edge of the airport , which is about 3 miles , about half way along is the Cammo estate , now a nature reserve , the stately home there was abandoned & is sadly now a ruin , it used to belong to a rather eccentric & notorious family with an amazing story. Keep geeking out it makes your videos even more fun !.

Tony, I am a history nerd so I loved this! 1) Mesolithic settlement, how cool 2) Roman Fort, and a large one! 3) I was just listening to a historian talk about towns in Western New York ( where I am from) and he was talking about the towns of Almond NY and West Almond NY (pronounced the same way you said it) and how they were named by Scottish settlers after a river near Edinburgh. So cool 😎 I so love this stuff!

Besides bus it's not too bad a walk from South gyle station. Or get off at dalmeny and take scenic route...but that's quite a way. But forth and river almond are beautiful

The number 41 bus will take you all the way there from the west end, I think they run every 10-15 minutes during the day

visited crammond many times on one occasion my wife and I nearly got stuck on the island but managed by the skin of our teeth we made it back across the walk way

If you mean the Cramond Lioness, I'm not sure that it made Mr Graham "rich". Scots law means there is no presumption of "finders keepers" - even if you were to dig up something in your own garden, it doesn't belong to you, but the nation.

I can't believe that since you and Kirsten are so nice. :) and I know this couple ;( . Is there anything that American visitors do that Scots find obnoxious? (Other than common rudeness that anyone would find obnoxious).

They must of been either really unlucky or there is another reason why they feel this way as visitors to Edinburgh always comment on how friendly the locals are compared to most other places & everywhere you go there is bound to be the occasional rude person !. Scots in general are not easily offended , they can even tolerate that a few Americans can be loud & arrogant ! , please don't take offence as we welcome all our friends from the States as they are usually great company.
