There are still side streets off that road I've yet to explore. :D I remember in the late 80s Cockburn St. was the place to be as a student, low-price t-shirt shops and suchlike. It's gone upmarket since then but still a fascinating area.

When I worked on Cockburn St. in the mid-to-late 70s, it was all clothing shops...jeans and casual, funky clothes. The place at the top left of lower Fleshmarket Close was a health food store (and later Avalanche Records); there was an antique jewellery place or two (still one there). And there was Cockburn St. Market near the bottom...clothes, jewellery, incense...stuff! The was also Hot Licks, the record shop located across from where I worked, Silver Star, a jeans shop now occupied by Viva Mexico. And yes, the Toddle In, with Lois, Irene and Robin at the counter - I hated to see them go. And the Malt Shovel is still there. I really appreciated this 'tour'. Whenever I'm on Cockburn Street I'm more intent on getting to where I'm going than actually taking the time to absorb what's actually happening on the street. Next time I'll slow down and have a look. The owl and pussycat, Lord Coburn, and the Mary Queen's Close entrance are all new to me, so thank you for that.

Using Cockburn Street was a big relief after finishing up at the Christmas Market one night last November. My knees really appreciated the slope instead of the stairs as I made my way back to Hamilton’s Mews. I took the closes down however. Much quicker. I’ll check out more of the shops this next trip. The Military Tattoo gift shop was lovely and many items in there support the Military Tattoo and charities.

That's What "i" Said We are coming again in mid September as well! Edinburgh has a lot of great food in different price ranges. Are you looking for restaurants in a particular area? If you like soup, try Union of Genius! Also recommend Social Bite; love all their efforts in behalf of the homeless! We’ve been to Edinburgh before, but I’ve been doing a lot of research for this trip as well. Let me know if you’re looking for anything in specific, and I can tell you what I’ve found. Hello, I am 87 years old and when I was first married I worked in a restaurant named Ritchies at the bottom of Cockburn street opposite the rear of the council house. I've been to the Loch Fyne Whiskies shop in Inveraray. Had a marvelous hour discussing and sampling beautiful whiskies from all over Scotland, with real whisky experts. Can we have a revisit to the Loch Fyne Whiskies shop on Cockburn Street? Interview the proprietors and highlight the different styles of single malts, talk about the distilling process and give some examples of quality and affordable as well as some of the mad unaffordable. I'm sure a whisky oriented vid would go down very well with some members of your audience. The shop would likely be up for it, free advertising for 30 minutes of their time and all that. Cheers, great channel by the way Embra's a lovely place and you showcase it well.
