Continuing my Mini Road Trip down in East Sussex and I’ve arrived in Lewes itself and ready to explore this Beautiful Town. In this Fourth Video, I take a Walk around Southover Grange Gardens and then up to the Main High Street via Keere Street to look at the many Historic Houses, Churches and Heritage around the Area. Lunch is at ‘The Rights of Man’ Pub which we came to a few years ago. Please note that Anne of Cleaves House, Lewes Priory and Lewes Castle will be in separate Videos.

I like 'Lewes Town' rather than simply 'Lewes'. It suggests intimacy. Wonderful to see so many familiar places from this far away country. I love the accommodation, very cute and all you need. I dunno, if it ain't a plane flying over or a strimmer its gotta be a crying child to augment one's video! I'm joking, of course, but I love Lewes, the architecture, the gardens. Those totem poles were brilliant and you gotta love a 'twitten' if you are in the area! I love just how many events of the past are still inveigling themselves into the present. I'm thinking especially of the 17 martyrs and the 17 flaming crosses that head the procession every bonfire night. Yes, 'Twitten' is such a beautiful word. I think Kym also explained the origin of the word on the Berwick walk, 'betwix and between' I think were her words! Tents in a churchyard? i have found them here, in the obscure woods in the village. A bizarre sight to come across. In any case this has been a joy! Thanks, Marq.

Very enjoyable tour around Lewes Marq. I used to visit the Crown Court at Lewes for meetings and was told that there was a lot of para normal activity on the top floors of the building.

Oh so good to see my old stomping grounds. I was at college there 84/85 and because buses were so infrequent between Lewes and Hailsham, two afternoons a week when we finished at 2.30 I would either sit in Southover gardens and do homework or just wander the churches and twittens. The bus to Hailsham went at 5.20. Incidentally, I was reminded recently there is a Twitten in Surrey! Goes up to the church in Lingfield. Lovely video Marq and I’m looking forward to the rest.

Hi Marq, we all love Lewes especially walking by the river Ouse. I know there's a lot of history in the town, I need to get out of my car and walk to explore. Yes Twitten is a Sussex name. Southover Grange gardens are beautiful, haven't been there for a while. I was up in Knights garden centre outside Godstone on Saturday. Lovely ploughman's lunch I ate there, had to bring half of it home! Will be back as there were some unusual shrubs there I'd not seen before.

Nice one Marq. I was in the Lewes Arms on Thursday with my work colleagues for a meal and a game of toad-in-the-hole !!! Loving the Winterbourne stream. Will be competing in the skittles tournament in June there. The Winterbourne flows all of the way to the Old Steine in Brighton (mainly underground) where it meets another seasonal bourne, the Wellesbourne, that flows outside where I live. The Mount by the train station is a mini Silbury Hill. Same slope angles and spiral path. Neolithic tools were found when they cut into it to make the bowling green. I used to bump into some interesting characters when I visited Lewes in the past and thought it was weird. Now that I work there, at Malling House, I just count my blessings of how many wonderful people I meet during a working day.🥰👍Hope you enjoyed your stay.

@@MarqEnglish Hope you enjoyed your👍 stay. I find it so interesting that they erect a cross on The Tump at Easter on the assumption that it is a Calvary hill, when neolithic tools have been found underneath the site. Interesting too that you picked up on energies in the church. I have changed and adjusted my journey into work from the train station many times as it just feels right now. I'm not psychic, just going the flow that feels in tune with the Earth currents.👍

Such an interesting video Marq and you've shown me places I have never been to although been to Lewes a hundred times. I will put some of those on my list! Lovely Churches, sad to see homeless people living in the grounds though. Nice lunch Marq and what looked like perfect accommodation centrally located for you. Thanks for sharing 🥰

Marq, thoroughly enjoyed your look around Lewes, especially as I’m visiting for the first time end of May, really felt the age of those places and I’ll enjoy enveloping myself in a little time warp whilst I breathe in the history. How fabulous that you seem to get little sneak peeks of the downs from so many points !…. A fellow twittern fan although from Surrey! …especially looking forward to viewing Anne of Cleves house- although I believe she never lived there , but ended up the happiest and most fortunate of the wives! Thanks again loved it xx

Nice little exploration of Lewes which does have plenty of twittens. Shame you missed out the churchyard of St Johns sub Castro but you were lucky with the other two churches! I think All Saints is run as an arts / community centre but not 100% sure - it always looks a bit 'alternative' on passing.

All Saints is indeed decommissioned and is an arts community centre, in fact my dance group just put on a ceilidh there. Spotted our flyer on the notice board at the town hall when you were reading about the martyrs being kept in the cellars before being burned at the stake.

Lovely Spring walk through Lewes & the Twittens. I had heard of them but was reminded like you by Richard Vobes. I have been there & soon after they had the terrible flood there that affected the brewery( can’t remember the name) Sad to see the homelessness only visible because you visited a less well known churchyard. I suppose one of the reasons the churches in quieter areas are locked shut. Thanks Marq

Yes I think you conveyed that in the video! It’s the unacceptable face of Britain- contrasts with the millions spent on people entering this country illegally ( but plenty of KZbin channels on this) Thanks Marq!
