Thanks for taking us on this walk today, I can imagine the woodswould be full of bluebells come May and what a sight that would be. Amazing to think how parts of the church are 6th century. I like the map of the graveyard for all of us family historians to view, interesting

The bluebell wood is one of my favourite memories of a childhood in Old Coulsdon. We lived at the top of Canon’s Hill, opposite the church … the church bells every Sunday morning is another lovely memory.

Great walk. The Fox is a lovely pub. I haven't been there for some years, but I used to go to it when walking around Cousldon.

Cool Coulsdon. I was imagining how quiet and rural it must have been when the old barn, church and scattered cottages were amongst fields and London was a lot smaller!

Thanks Mark- I could not understand the connection between the City of London & Coulsdon Common- so I googled it - looked at the City of London site but still couldn’t find the connection. Seems a long way away. Didn’t realise Old Coulsdon had Saxon origins. Dinner looked nice. I have never tried Venison either!

Ps I looked it up again & the City appear to own several green spaces( this is what they call them) - they own Burnham Beeches! Went there once- never again as all I remember is seeing giant ants roaming!

I lived in Old Coulsdon from age 4 until I left university, when my parents moved to Guildford. It was a wonderful place to grow up. Our house was the first in the road, opposite the church. OC has an interesting WW2 history which would be worth exploring. The Battle of Britain in particular …. A Messerschmitt came down on the golf course behind our house and was only excavated in the 70s! Also doodle bug craters in the woodland. And someone else mentioned the big house next to the church, which was an important strategic centre. Thanks for an interesting and nostalgic watch !

So good to visit Old Coulsdon again. I went to Keston infant and junior school and lived in Old Coulsdon until my mum moved us to Caterham. I remember sledging down Farthing Downs in thick snow in the 1960s. Thankyou for bringing back some great memories for me. A lovely area much overlooked by people who assume because it’s close to London it’s more suburban sprawl..it’s charming and ancient with its own history and character. 👍🏻

Great video, Marq - I’ve been meaning to take a look at the church at old coulsdon but I think it’s only open on certain days. It’s the only grade 1 listed building in coulsdon - the new nave is probably 3 times the size of the original church!

Not a bad video but as Old Coulsdon born and bred there were a couple of glaring omissions and a couple of glaring errors. Firstly, the pond, farm and green are all called Bradmore and not ‘broad mere’ - as all the signage in the video attests. Secondly, while at the church, it would have been great to mention the Grange right next to it, which was the operations room for Kenley Aerodrome during WW2 from where spitfires were commanded from during the Battle of Britain. Thirdly, while on Coulsdon Common, the Windmill Kennels were mentioned as the location of the most recent windmill - which it was. However, it would have been a great extra point of interest to mention it was where the Crufts Dog Show was started from. Apart from these points, I did enjoy this video - thank you.
