I'm really enjoying your videos, Mark. I appreciate how you take the time to explain the historical and cultural context and significance of these places as well as pointing out the way things are changing in Vietnam. I'm currently planning my third trip to Vietnam for next spring and you continue to give me lots of ideas for places I've yet to visit. Excellent work, sir! I can't wait to come back to my favourite place on earth!

Great video Mark. Thank you for such an informative tour of Hanoi albeit short. I'm looking forward to visiting the places you've pointed out at the end of the year. More please.

Great video - thanks for the tour. The architecture is stunning - sad to hear about the demolished buildings by the French

You described Hanoi so invitingly. You where so right about Hanoi being walkable and the public spaces. I like what you said about it's "built culture" being preserved. I didn't visit Saigon because I didn't have time when I visited Vietnam. I chose Hanoi over it for the same reasons you pointed out. Please check out my Hanoi video-montage you'll find on my channel. From one Mark to another Mark - Peace.

There's a lot more colonial architecture outside the French Quarter, like mansions, schools and government buildings.

Beautiful architecture devoid of Stalinist practicality. I particularly liked the pagoda from 1740. My wife read the Chinese characters but doesn't fully understand why this building was names "small knife". It does show how China influenced Vietnam before colonization. The one question that I have: Where are all the people. Compared to Nanning, where I normally visit Hanoi seems empty. Does it get more crowded during the winter months? thanks again for posting.

True that there are many beautiful places still left in Hanoi, but with the much higher air-pollution in Hanoi, you definitely don't enjoy walking anywhere in Hanoi, once you become aware of that fact.

Thanks for that arch. Tour Mark . Wondering if French language is still prevalent amongst the local population ?

Becoming less so. Older Vietnamese stlll speak some French but the young generation is focused more on English / Japanese / Korean / Chinese. There are still French schools in Saigon and Hanoi however.

Why was the cathedral fenced off?

Not certain. Think it's probably just to keep the motorbikes at bay - or in preparation for an event. No problem getting inside though.

Colonial gems? Hmmm... No trip to Hanoi is complete without a visit to Hoa Lo Prison where travelers can witness the brutality and cruelty of the French Colonialists. A guillotine sits eerily in the Prison as a telling reminder of the underbelly of Vietnam's colonial legacy...

You're always insist on what the French has destroyed during the Colonial time and the war with the Vietnamese! But no mention of the colossal damage of the Americans caused during 25 years of war they had with the Vietnamese. I wonder why?
