I lived in Hunter Street back in the 60s. We were always at the cemetery. I had my favourite, I put flowers on it. Was a women's grave. Then the cemetery was very neglected. You could see into graves. The boxes were like they were thrown in. One on top of the other. Vandals had thrown red paint on some. So sad to see these graves disrespected.

I remember hearing from American vets (most of my NCOs and officers were Nam vets when I was in the army) that their South Vietnamese counter parts when hanging out with them would hold hands as a sign of friendship. Nothing flakey about it but it still startled the Joes.

I love old cemeteries and graves. They can tell real stories of the past. Kind of nostalgic I guess

I too walked past this grave yard all the time and wondered why it was so neglected . I thought it was marked for development it’s just to tempting.

It looks like it has been purposefully planted with beautiful native grasses like Themeda triandra and Microlaena stipoides. It hints at the aboriginal landscape that these early settlers were buried in.

My 4 x great-grandmother was transported from England with her two children, and spent her early years in NSW at the Parramatta Female Factory - yet I'd never heard of the Factory until I became involved in tracing our family tree in recent years.

How disgraceful that this piece of colonial history has been so roundly neglected by the authorities. It shouldn't be left to volunteers.

Was gradual over many years. My work meant I was pretty immersed in it for a decade so that helped. As you probably know, pronunciation is key.
