What a lovely small town. I love the church. I try to imagine what it looked in medieval times; all color and incense. What is seen now is its beautiful bones. Someday, it would be nice to walk these venues in person instead of virtually. Thank you for the lovely tour.

To say that was exquisite is a massive understatement! Where I used to live? Which was near to Dartmouth, it had a pup very much like the Cross keys hotel! I do not know how long it had been a pub sadly! but it was just as magnificent inside as it was outside! Saffron Walden is a stunningly beautiful place! I used to go to d'Oxford before it became IWM I wish I had visited this beautiful place! thank you for that delightful tour!

Enjoyed the video very much and thanks for your time to put up here. I've been there a few times (as an Essex boy myself), as I was inspired by Alec Clifton-Taylor's BBC program, 6 English Towns (well worth a watch, if not seen). In case no one has mentioned it yet, or you remain unaware, Jack Cardiff was mainly a cinematographer and worked on many great films (The African Queen/A Matter of Life and Death are just 2) and worked with many of the greats (Hitchcock/Monroe/Chaplin etc) and won 2 Oscars and certainly worth a blue plaque.

Very nice Chris. I must have driven through this town dozens and dozens of times, often on the way to Audley End, but only stopped on a couple of occasions. The last time to visit the museum to donate something I had found. My mother was billeted in Saffron Walden during WWII, when she was stationed at RAF Debden, and Castle Camps. We are really enjoying your tours of Essex towns. When did you film this ?

Great video!! I live in saffron walden and grew up here! I just thought i would tell you about the names and dates, stratched into brick walls either side, at 45mins, the alley way opposite the church, you walked down and some of the dates are from as far back as late 1700s! Every time I walk down that alley, I always have to have a quick look

The front of the library was the Corn Exchange. The Literary & Scientific was next door down King Street. The County Library moved there from Church Street when the Lit & Sci wound up. The County Council was persuaded in the 70s not to sell the Corn Exchange, but to merge it with the Library next door.

Saffron Walden Union Workhouse was built between 1835 and 1836, and could accommodate 340 inmates. The architect was James Clephan who also designed workhouses in Ampthill (Bedfordshire) and Wellingborough (Northamptonshire). The building was mostly three storeys and based on a cruciform plan (after Sampson Kempthorne's model plan of 1835) with round-headed, small-paned, cast iron windows. It was built of yellow stock brick with a corrugated asbestos roof, replacing slate, and decorative brick courses. It had a large entrance block with a clock between two windows at the top. To the rear, accommodation wings radiated from an octagonal supervisory hub with men accommodated in the west wing, women in the east, boys in the north, and girls in the south. In 1846 an infirmary, washhouse and laundry were added in the north-east yard. Four fever wards were also added in October 1848, which allowed the workhouse to accommodate 400 people. There was a separate casual ward to the south-west with a row of cells along each side, lit by small round windows. The workhouse later became St James' Hospital under the National Health Service and then Saffron Walden Community Hospital. The workhouse has now been converted to residential accommodation with a hospital built adjacent to the site. Grade II listed.

Question: What did the people use to paint the tudor buildings that pinkish color? It's just unusual, at least to me, so pink. It's on the buildings on Gold Street at 12:18 and 13:48 and also on the interior walls at Marney Tower (like at 6:38 Layer Marney Tower, Essex). How terrible that they're using that man's tomb as a desk (31:15).

These workhouses covered larger areas, meaning that everyone had the chance to gain shelter and work, not just those in the largest parishes. However, these became more like prisons than charities.

Oliver Cromwell b1599 stationed his soldiers and their horses INSIDE the church during the 16th Century. Oliver Cromwell was one of the strongest advocates of the English Reformation 16th Century and the break with the Papacy in Rome, when the English Church broke with the Catholic church in Rome.THAT is why the brasses were removed and missing and the stained glass windows were destroyed in our beautiful church.

And for someone who claims to have an interest in the Paranormal, I'm surprised you didn't stand outside Hill House at the top of the High Street, Walden's 2nd most haunted building after the Cross Keys Hotel. Nor did your lack of research point you towards the top left of the common opposite the castle to the site of the old ducking stool pond, did it..
