Wonderful to see Knossos again I saw it in 1983 and it has changed a fair bit. The Bull fresco was on the large wall seen at 23:00. You used to be able to explore much more all though they hadn't dug up much of it. You didn't get to see the Dolphin room. A shame. Thank you for sharing this.

This is so cool, not only this video but history in general, studing the past, to better understand the future, getting insight on how people lived without modern technology. I could go on about history is awesome, but I don't want to type a twenty page essay at 10 PM.

I grew up in a village of about 300 people and it only had 2 shops! To think there are more probably rooms in that one building (about 1400?) than in the whole town I grew up in!!! Amazing footage, thank you. (Also at the height of Minoan power, would Knossos have been one of the largest buildings (with the most rooms) in the world?? I can't even imagine a building with that many rooms in!

I learned about the Minoan civilization in high school, and it sounded quite idyllic for its time. I think if I had to choose any society to live in, in the time before the Renaissance, it would be the Minoan one.

@@Funk5Punk your comment is old so you probably won't see this, but that's incredible that you are from Crete! I'm in my 30s now but have been drawn to the Minoans (Keftiu to the Egyptians at the time) since I was very young. People on Crete have access to so much of the incredible Minoan history, heck I saw a video of a man on a beach in Crete digging shards of Minoan pottery from a bank of earth.. Their history is all around you!! And having Akrotiri so close too 💚
@Vexarax
@Vexarax 3 жыл бұрын
@@Funk5Punk - Also yes their period in time would have been one of the greatest to live in. These people didn't even have defensive walls despite being in a part of the world (and a time in history) when everyone was invading everyone else. Yet somehow they didn't need walls despite being a wealthy nation with many beautiful and valuable resources. Sadly after Thera wrought destruction on them they became open to invasions, and their lack of walls had a bit to do with that, but prior to the eruption their world was splendid, peaceful, and also (it appears anyway) equal which is a huge feat for the time they lived!!

Knossos looks a lot smaller then when I visited it in the 90s. I thought they had a giant fresco of a bull jumper somewhere on the site, not the small one on the wall but a much larger one that takes up an entire wall.

That seems very odd to me that the throne room seems almost modest. I mean this place was the superpower of the Mediterranean at one point, you'd think they'd have a huge throne room. I guess the Minoan kings didn't really think that was important?

How the hell is the paint on some of those pillars still so vivid? Naw bruh, I refuse to believe it, some of this stuff was built recently.
@user-sd8ec5jv2z
@user-sd8ec5jv2z 7 жыл бұрын
You're correct, this entire palace never looked like that. Many of the pillars and structures are either reconstructed or brand new. Most of the paint jobs are recent, though there are a handful of frescoes inside that are ancient.
@user-sd8ec5jv2z

Zakros, Malia, Phaistos, Akrotiri (truly amazing one), Mochlos, and Gournia are all pretty decent. There are others, but they're pretty dilapidated or not excavated enough.
@user-sd8ec5jv2z
@user-sd8ec5jv2z 7 жыл бұрын
Just to add some context, this reconstruction is very, very wrong. Sir Arthur Evans completely miscalculated how this palace would have actually been structured. I learned of this from an archaeologist from Crete who specialized in Minoan findings.

You need to fix a 2016 $500 sony 4k action-camera to a baby stroller, also a voice-over is necessary with a slight ancienty melody in the background. If you have the $2400 buy the 2014 Samsung nx1 with s-lens 16-55 apsc, it's not better than the a6500 in the dark but it's better in overall results by far, I think it will pay for its self much better! people like a pretty-as-possible image, that's where the 'discontinued' 2014 nx1 won't be bested. KZbin samples are available, not sponsored! Lol...
