Dayang Anderson I didn’t know till this year that slugs ate sunflowers! I hope I have that managed now. I used the iron pellets. Once the plants get past a certain point they will be okay.

I got the lady bird larvae this year with the hopes that getting them in their early lifecycle,without wings, will make them stay around. It’s been nearly a week and they have done such an amazing job so far. Fingers crossed that when they are all grown up they will stick around. But even if they don’t, they have already cleared one rose bush and half of another. So I’m a happy lady.

The mass of ladybugs reminded me of back when I was still driving Greyhound bus all over the Western states we would get shipments of live crickets and live chicks in our baggage compartments. We could hear them singing and keeping themselves company all through the night and over the mountain passes. Many times I would pick up hundreds of totes of freshly picked wild Chanterelle mushrooms headed to California restaurants from intrepid entrepreneur wildcrafters who had hiked all over Oregon and Washington to find and harvest them.
