World War Two

Күн бұрын

While the Second World War grows ever more destructive, some nations take advantage of the global chaos to settle old disputes. In Peru and Ecuador, long standing territorial disputes turn violent.

Indy, you look different. Are you doing the drugs again? Lol, you'll never live that one down. I do have a real question though: Can you detail the relation between the RAF and the Fleet Air Arm? My understanding is that the FAA had been essentially neutered by inter service fund wars, but I dont have decent sources on it.

My Grandmother lived in the region Peru invaded in the province of El Oro (there is still a lot of gold there and was mainly an old Spanish colonial town with almost no natives), she had to flee with all the family. My great grandparents and her 8 siblings through the thick rainforest for many days to hide in the mountains. Ecuador still has hard feelings about Peru, and the collective memory of the country has never forget what Peru did. A stupid war for a mountainous forest region filed whit wild animals, diseases and some old gold mines.

Ecuadorian here. The war of 1941 became a national tragedy for decades. An unprepared army ruled by a corrupt president looses almost inmediately and then signs a treaty that took the last part of the amazon river we owned and reduced us to our current size. Even the government, wouldn't last for long and would fall by 1944. The Rio treaty was sort of recognised until 1960 when Velasco Ibarra, the current president, decided to not acknowledge it and claim the lost territory was still our own. It was such a weird measure that no country recognised the claim, not even Peru so it was basically as saying that the house you lost 30 years ago was still yours. I remember that my grandma and my parents kept maps of Ecuador they were taught at school where they still showed that part of the map as if was still on ecuadorian hands and they told me they were taught that Peru stoled that land from us. There were even rumors that the Axis Powers were supporting Peru but that's unproven. We had two more wars with Peru. One in 1981 which basically led to nothing and the last one in 1995 which led three years after to the Act of Brasilia that definitively signed peace for good among our nations. It was sad because we finally recognised the loss of that territory but it was for the best. We already had much worse things to worry by that year. Great video Indy. You should do one day a video about how the continent dealt with the war. Not everyone was so keen on supporting the U.S. and odd as it seems, there were a lot, a lot of nazis here.

@Ordinary Sessel Okay, but the fact that some airmen were volunteering abroad does not make the US 'in the war'. To take your example of todays Ukraine, do you think the US is in the Ukrainian civil war? The people of Ukraine certainly do not and the people of the world did not think the US was in WW2 until 1941, its as simple as that. The flying Tigers history is well respected, but dont try to tell me that the US was in the war from the get go because it was not. By the time the US entered the war millions of people had already given their lives fighting against Japan and Germany.

In Peru there is a different idea and at the same time wrong about this war. I am Peruvian and many of my compatriots believe that we defended ourselves against Ecuador and even that territory was lost, which makes no sense at all because we overshadowed two provinces of Ecuador and annexed the territories in dispute. If that war had never occurred, Peru would not have the territories that it currently possesses, that is why the war was won and Ecuadorian territory was won, but Peruvians do not assume that reality and only believe that they defended themselves against a country that did not have nothing to attack us, this way of thinking of my compatriots bothers me a lot because it is an insult to logic and intelligence.

Younger people now is pretty chill about this. You can find lots of Peruvian food here in Quito... In Ecuador, every year we used (not sure now) to do a "Jura de la Bandera", that is our version of the "The Pledge of Allegiance" but in a grandiose yearly event. Kids in 12th grade then take a pledge and kiss the flag (video related: kzbin.info/www/bejne/apm8fqx3rct4arM&feature=emb_title ). The kid with the higher grades gets the honor to carry the flag. The kids bellow 12th grade usually just are there as spectators... we even used to march and stuff.. Anyways, as part of the event, foreign kids in 12 grade used to take a small flag of their country and salute the Ecuadorian flag and say "Ecuador, salutes you!!!". (customs might change form city to city, from school to school) Now consider we used to do this event close to the end of February to commemorate the "Batalla of Tarqui" (just another chapter in this conflict). So we started preparing in January. In 1995, in my HS, there was a Peruvian girl, just as the Cenepa War happened. At the height of the conflict, in one rehearsal (all the School was there), she had to take the Peruvian flag and say "Ecuador, Peru salutes you!!!". And she did. Really a brave kid, I still remember that. It takes guts to do it. Sadly she was not there for the real thing. Never knew what happened to her. Edit: about the territorial changes, to be honest is our own fault, but that is a different tale.
@danmarce

@CAROGOPRI Well, back then all our problems were supposedly caused by our neighbors, all of them "took territory form us", Colombia Included. But with Colombia there is another issue. This is mostly caused by the guerrillas in Colombia, Ecuador, even being such a small country, got thousands of Colombian refugees, who fled from the "war" there reporting.unhcr.org/node/2543 , note those are legally registered as refugees. so it is common to blame crime and stuff to the Colombians (now, they blame Venezuelans too). You know, the easy way out for any government, blame immigrants, refugees and minorities. Is a shame. Of course Ecuador IS NOT a paradise, we have lots of issues, but since we use the US Dollar as currency... It was common to use the Peru card if there was any problem, the peace in 1998 removed that option and most people now forgets about it (until there is a soccer match between us, they call us "Monos" we call them "Gallinas", funny headlines on some media and we have to win, but I think Peruvians care more about Chile, though)

Hi Indy! speaking of this war, my great great uncle from my paternal grandfather's side and from northern Peru, joined the army following the events that led to Peruvian- Ecuatorian war. As far as i know from my grandfather and other relatives who knew him well, he joined in a cavalry division and at the front he was tasked to carry the peruvian flag to conquered territories. Later he was shot in the leg but survived the war. His name was Carlos Seminario Adrianzen aka. Mackilon. Great video and keep the good work! Saludos!

The picture of the tank is the Tanque 39 which was indeed used during the war. The Peruvians bought 24 from the Czechs which based the design on it's TNH tank....the tanks were highly successful in Peru, rugged and agile. At least one is still on display in Peru. The Germans confiscated similar tanks when it incorporated Czechoslovakia into the Reich and they represented about 1/4 of German armor against France (including Rommel's Division in France) and also were used in significant numbers during Barbarossa. Of course these reliable tanks were used throughout the rest of the war as a turretless tank destroyer called the Hetzer.

I was aware the ongoing border dispute between Ecuador and Peru, but I did not learn about from books, but from first-hand experience. At the beginning of 1977 I was on an officer on old cargo ship operated by the U.S. NAvy's Military Sealift Command that was assigned to transport a load of ammunition from the U.S. to Ecuador and Peru. After we arrived at Guayaquil the Ecuadorian Army Officers with whom we dealt were perfectly satisfied with the cargo we had brought them, but became very upset when they learned that the remainder of our cargo of munitions was destined for Peru. Later, when we arrived at the port of Ancon, in Peru, the Peruvian officials reacted in a similar fashion. The story we were told (and I must point out that I cannot positively vouch for how much truth there was in it) was that somebody had discovered oil somewhere up in the Oriente, the remote eastern portion of Ecuador that consisted mainly of impenetrable jungle, and which was apparently still in dispute between the two countries. Apparently, neither country had bothered to make much of an issue out of which country actually owned that particular region until 1976, when the real estate suddenly became worth something. Meanwhile, we found ourselves in the embarrassing position of supplying ammunition to two countries which were preparing to go to war against each other. I do not believe that the 1977 dispute ever actually erupted into open warfare but, as the video notes, the border dispute between Ecuador and Peru was not finally resolved for good until sixteen years later, in1993. Incidentally, that was not the only occasion when our brilliant State Department placed our ship in such a situation. A few months later we made a similar voyage transporting ammunition to Turkey and Greece, and those two countries weren't too happy about what we were doing, either.

It really isn't fair to say that the Ecuadorians had no equipment, it's just that they put all of their money into the infantry. They had modern light and heavy machine guns (by the old definition) imported from the Czechs. The lack of any real sort of modern artillery you are right on the money though, but they did have some Italian ww1 era infantry guns, and some field guns from the first years of the 20th century. They also had some fully Italianized troops that were kept near the capital along with the best units of the army, these men had been kept there because the President was deeply concerned about the possibility of a coup or popular uprising, these fears were a major part of what had prevented Ecuador from adequately preparing in the first place. Ironically, while this was the reason the war was as quick and terrible of a failure as it was, the fear of fighting these units in the Andes was a major factor in Peruvian high command's decision to stop the war when they did, and not press any further. Now why was the government so afraid and what choices did they make as a result that doomed their war effort? The government was deeply unpopular with the public and the military had a long history of playing Kingmakers, as a result, the army hadn't been given proper funding for years, and that is why they didn't mobilize until the third week of the war. Mobilize anyone outside of the standing army I should say. That is also why even though they had a large stockpile of rifles that they could have handed out in a wider mobilization, to at least get a wave of conscripts into the field to do something to slow down the Peruvians, especially during the final week when everything went to hell at a minimum, they didn't. They were afraid these armed civilians or even the police they armed in week 3 would march on the capitol and overthrow the President, and that had been for a long time their number one concern. Now I should also say that Ecuadorians were not in nearly as bad a position during the first three weeks of the war that by any right they should have been or as they are presented in the video. The Ecuadorians had managed a successful mobile defense during the first Peruvian offensive and had tricked the Peruvians into thinking there were a lot more men at the front then there really were. They also took ground in a few places like Noblecilla Island. However, all this did was buy time, and time the Ecuadorian government wasn't effectively able to use, so when the ruse was up and the Peruvians came in a few weeks later, now prepared to deal with a larger force, it all fell apart fairly quickly.

As a Peruvian I feel myelf a bit uneasy about the narrative of this chapter of Ecuadorian - Peruvian border issue. To say the least, it is not entirely true that we were the big and bad abusive neighbour of the Ecuadorians. The real border issue was the Ecuadorian aspiration to become an Amazonian region. Their claim was based upon the argument of Quito as a departure site of the expedition that discovered the Amazon river in 1542. That is not true. None of the countries existed in the mid XVIth century and the expedition began in Cusco. We indeed won the war (one of the few times we actually won a war) but were very generous with them. Ecuador became an oil producer thanks to the territory they obtained from the Treaty of 1942.

There were some clashes and when I arrived in Peru, their newspapers were claiming Ecuador bombed an outpost, but I saw the entire Ecuadorian air force bomber fleet in pieces a few days before, so I expect it was a lie. Also travelling on the Amazon from Ecuador and Peru, you had to go downstream to the bottom of the island to get an Ecuadorian exit stamp and then back upriver to the top of the island to get your Peruvian entrance stamp and then proceed downriver again. I found dealing with the Ecuadorian army and police, much more pleasant than the Peruvian ones. They were all corrupt, but the Ecuadorians were much more laid back and relaxed about it, the Peruvians were pretty tightly wound up and nasty.

Indie, few years before the start of WWII Bolivia and Paraguay engaged in a bloody war. It was the first war in South America that involved new equipment and tactis (Such as tanks and aviation) in its operations, and even german officers directed operations in the bolivian side, Ernst Röhm was actually attached in the bolivan army some years before the start of this conflict, it would be nice if the channel cover La Guerra del Chaco, I'm sure you would get incredible information in the origin of this war, its development, conclusion and effects. Regards!

Hope the Ecuadorian Army upgraded their 19th century artillery by now. Also a pro tip for Ecuadorians and Germans alike: if you're using trucks in a war, make sure you put fuel in them.

Ecuador & Peru are always going to war, and Ecuador always loses. I've spent a lot of time in both countries, and an Ecuadorean historian told me this. He said they don't take it seriously enough

So, if I followed that correctly, Ecuador ended up pretty much where it started?
