Back in 2017 I watched one of your videos and it compelled me to give us secular music, TV, video games, everything. I spent about a month just watching sermons and reading the bible. Pretty soon I began to be very legalistic, looking down on others in the church - convinced I was the only one truly living a holy. I became so legalistic I thought animals talking in cartoons was immoral because it was unnatural. Shortly after, I became depressed and filled with anxiety because all I had was sermons and bible readings to look forward to after work. I lost my joy and desire to even do those things. I finally snapped out of it and realized I was placing requirements on myself not biblical, impossible to hold to, and I very much felt like a Holier than thou Pharisee. I did grow closer to God as a result but I learned much study wearies the body and from then on I decided I didn't need to broadcast any of my personal convictions onto others nor should they do that to me. What's biblical is biblical but I believe God will lead different people away from different things because he knows they can't handle things. Some people absolutely won't touch alcohol. Some people can't listen to secular music, even if there's nothing immoral within it. Keep the plain things the main things and the main things the plain things. Too many people want to shape Christianity into their own theology and then force it upon others. Follow the Bible, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. Not someone's opinions on things.

work on yourself one day at a time. We aren't immediately at the highest point of sanctification the minute we accept Christ, it takes time for us to grow through Him! Putting your faith in Christ alone through grace alone like it seems you have done since four years ago means you are saved and are not going to Hell. God's grace is shown if you are not able to mentally or physically do something, God doesn't condemn disability, rather excessive idleness out of something we are able to do, but don't care about and choose not to do. I too have clinical depression along with autism, PTSD and psychosis/schizophrenia - there are things that are out of my control that I have to rely on God to handle. No matter where you are or what you do... Be pleasing to the Lord. Work hard and thank Him for times of rest. It's all about motives and heart. We can't put God in a box. Serving the Lord is not meant only to be done in the walls of the Church. As a homemaker, I see the importance of serving the family. Look at how many marriages are falling apart, because they spend too much time doing other things for other people. There can be a healthy balance. The point is to do something, not everything. Churches busy themselves with so many activities , that there is no time for anything else and then guilt trip the body of Christ for not doing more.

I lost my career in architecture, my recording studio and ended up going through divorce and living a life on the streets; sleeping in the rain and snow, in and out of jail, been stabbed and held at gunpoint (if not by cops then by other thugs and dealers) had to be revived from overdose and experienced a stroke from the neglect I put my body through with hardcore drinking and heavy drug use. I missed out on my sisters' marriages, grandparents funerals, and all sorts of family functions just to come home and witness my father die of a heart attack on the bathroom floor. Little did I know that all these events will bring me to repentance and give me an experience in life to better relate to those going through similar experiences and guide them to Lord Jesus Christ. Satan meant evil against me but God meant it for good in order that His name be glorified. I think it is an encouragement to help us refine how we spend our time. The issue at hand is both a conscience issue, and it does vary from person to person. The goal of the video is to remind us these can be sinful tendencies of ours, and we always have to be reminded of truths like these to recalibrate our consciences because we so easily stray and become complacent in our sin and time-wasters. Also, we have no idea the spiritual maturity of the people watching this. There could be someone who is newly saved and this is their first time hearing something like this.

One, Baxter's life in the 1600's is not 2024. Second, It's easy to become legalistic rather than from the heart when it comes to practicing religion. And third, our earthly bodies were not meant to last forever. I'm going to be 59 in 29 days and though I have been disciplined in treating my body and mind, I cannot stop the inevitable. God is sovereign and allowed suffering to get my priorities in order. The Biblical truth is that we should work as serving Jesus, and that even slaves are rewarded for the work they do for Him, and so I'm not doing a pointless assignment to get a good number to get a job later, but instead am serving God, and the reward, if my heart is right, is from Him. But man, it's hard to believe that in the moment, and so I get lazy, seeing no value in doing an assignment just to prove I can do what's on the assignment to get a slightly better number, and so I procrastinate until I can feel the weight of the possibility of failure. That's exactly my point expressed earlier in another comment. I see a lot of these things he advises against in the video as enjoying the gifts God has given us, and I often thank Him for them! All my 74 years I've dealt with Christians who see something I'm doing or like and don't consider me Christian because of them and can't be persuaded to avoid them when I see nothing wrong with them. It's been a real problem for me, and I'm sure it's driven a lot of new Christians away from the church.

This gets a little old- Todd is not a pastor but I respect and enjoy much of these videos. John Piper is a pastor and again I respect him as well- but both of them get caught up in this performance, and when comes down to it, it truly is about the Holy Spirit, guiding our walk, and having the joy of the Lord. This is a result of being in the Word of God. This Christian walk is full of ups and downs. It is full of times of energy and reserving our energy. Being in a healthy church is essential.

Todd, I admire you and usually like your posts. Your heart is in the right place, I know. You are correct that sloth is a sin, but I don’t think genuinely slothful people are your main audience. They are more likely the 20% who do 80% of the work, who don’t need to hear they need to be “doing more” or they are lazy, and worse yet, displeasing their Savior. Burnout in the church is rampant. Willing souls with tender consciences who have a hard time saying no are being guilted into carrying heavier burdens than they can carry. Overworked pastors are resigning in despair. I know you meant well. But I’m afraid your intended audience is not going to listen. Instead, the harassed and helpless are going to push themselves even further down the rabbit hole of “works” sanctification.

The one thing I have to say is that not all of these come from Scripture, and some of these things might be different for different people. Some people decorate A LOT for Christmas, and use it to give the Gospel to people who come see their decorations. What is your purpose in your spent time? Is it to help the brotherhood of believers, witness to unbelievers, and grow in your faith? Edit: And with my question I unknowingly paraphrased point 12, which probably eliminates the need for the other 11 points.

Hello. I hope you don't mind me bringing to your attention that while reading the Bible on my own, I've found that it never once says that Jesus is God. If you look for a plain scripture where Jesus says, "I am God," you will not find it. Nor will you find anyone saying "Jesus is God." The vast majority of churches in the world teach that Jesus is God, which according to my recent discoveries, is a doctrine based solely on interpretation. That's very dangerous, especially since God says he will not share his praise and glory with another (Psalm 42:8). Remember, this is Satan's kingdom we're in right now, and I believe this is the enemies booby trap under the church waiting to go off at judgment. Look at 2 Peter 1:1-3... "just as there will be false teachers among you, who will subtly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them... many will follow their shameful ways, and because of them the way of truth will be spoken evil of... they will exploit you with false arguments and twisted doctrine." "Denying the Master," how? As shown above, by taking the glory and praise due to God and placing it upon his Son, and exhalting him as God when he's a man like you and me, who has the same God and Father as you and me (John 4:22, John 20:17). To say again, detracting from the work of who and what Jesus is and did, which is his rightful glory, and putting God's glory as Father and creator on Jesus. This worship is causing the Son to eclipse the Father. Jesus never said "I am God." We shouldn't put words in his mouth.

The heart wants to continue in Gods work but it’s just not like it was a few years back. I do feel condemnation for not being in the fast lane of yesteryear. I volunteer and we visit different churches now and fill in on the piano when needed, but life’s just not what it used to be, unfortunately. So doing things that are not sinful or even worldly is a problem?
@user-hj4uo7py5m9 ай бұрын
The bible says the Lord has given to each one of use "a measure of faith" that is we all have different levels of faith , some greater than others. He deals with us differently. Bible also says "to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin" meaning when we feel convicted about anything we do throughout our day , and if we go against that conviction it is a sin . 1 example is some Christians believe that they aren't allowed to wear jeans, while others find no issue with it. That is because God simply gave them a conviction. Is it wrong to wear jeans? Not necessarily, but it can be when worn with the wrong intentions such as wearing them to show off your body. That would then be considered sin because you are doing it with the intent to make others stumble including yourself. So back to your question, God will judge you based off the intent to why you did what you did and if you deliberately ignored his voice of conviction to not be at a certain place , or do certain things that may cause you to stumble. Now don't beat yourself up if you do stumble because you have a savior already who will help you but to deliberately shun Gods voice can be dangerous to our spiritual health if not looked at with urgent care. Which is why it's important to learn to grow so close to the Lord that your sensitive to his voice wherever you go. God bless
@TimothyAlldredge9 ай бұрын
Thanks for your response. The answer is there is no problem. So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. For if it is in faith it is not of sin and if it is not sin or worldly there is no problem.

Where do those with the inability to live up to these standards fall? Physical and mental disabilities along old age, all play a part in your ability to do anything, let alone these standards. This is an honest question because i have all of these issues in my family, and i do not believe they are any less Christian because they literally can't be what you explain.
@sidwhiting6659 ай бұрын
What do you mean "live up to these standards?" I don't see too many standards being applied here, other than admonishing us not to waste time. I do see a lot of time-wasting activities being called out. The key, as always, is proper discernment. I heard him say things like, "Don't spend so much time on your phone scrolling social media." There is no physical or mental disability that requires a person to spend oodles of time scrolling social media. None. Anyone can meet that "standard." He emphasizes several times the word "NEEDLESS" in front of the activity in question. If the activity is NEEDFUL for you, then it's fine. Do it. If it's NEEDLESS, then it's not. Don't do it. I recommend watching the video again, and be careful to listen to what he's actually saying. I challenge anyone to claim that scrolling Instagram for an hour a day is a needful activity in the life of a Christian.

This is one of the reasons why a lot of Christians throw in the towel and go off to live life as best they can: the unrelenting teaching that we're not really saved, for here's another list of things we're doing that's going to send us to Hell, things we never dreamed we're doing wrong, those "sins of omission". I've been hearing more of these for over fifty years. Never a sermon about how great it is for us to live life as Christians, just more and more examples of how we may think we're right with God but we're not and probably never have been! And, of course, this gives ammo to fellow Christians, with whom you should have a bond, a fellowship, to come to you and instead seek to counsel you for being, let's see....lazy or eating too much rich food or reading the literature you love or even sleeping too much! Never real spiritual growth, just "Here's some more things you're doing wrong and will go to Hell for...." Often when people are led to Christ, they're told it's free, so they repent, say the prayer, and are born again. Yet before long, they keep getting more and more and more of teachings like this video that shows they're not really saved at all, for they've done even little simple things that will send them to Hell. Who would have thought you could be a sincere Christian, yet find upon death that you're going to Hell because you slept too much? Or dined on rich food? Or were lazy? Despite your sincerity and years of service, you can lose it all and get sent to Hell over some little misstep you weren't even aware of?

It sounds like you hold to conditional security - "Sinless Perfection or Hell" a view which, by the way, is Heretical! There is your problem, you are holding to a Confirmed Heresy, condemned at both the Council of Carthage in 419 (Read Augustine's Confessions) and the 1619 Synod of Dort (see the 1619 Canons of Dort) there is your problem, the Heresy of "Complete Sinlessness in the Flesh required for Salvation" , the Heresy of Arminianism! As long as you hold to the confirmed Heresy of conditional security you are always going to be stuck at the top of the Tower with the big Stinky Dragon of defeat! You must turn away from the Lie of Satan that is conditional security. You need to learn the Bible Truth, Christ died for *every single one* of your sins, *all of them* cradle to grave, Past, Present and Future, this because we will be Sinners until the day we die, even the Puritans, when asked, would confess to being the worst of Sinners, as a result of the fact we will not be Sinless this side of death, Salvation in Christ is Unconditional, and it is Eternal, it can never be Lost, it will never be taken away, it is for ever. When you realise that, Christ slays the Dragon of Defeat for you! You see, we do not give up on watching sports, bury our Violent Games so deep in the "Hidden Folders" of our Steam accounts as to be Irrecoverable, Unsubscribe from Netflix, and seek Holier, more Pious lives to be saved, no, that is works, the lie of Rome, of the mother of Harlots! No, we do that because we are Saved, eternally, in Christ Finished works, it is the results of our Eternal Salvation in Christ, as the Holy Ghost, whose Seal is Eternal, regenerates us, daily, to slowly Conform us to the Image of Christ, the only one to be Sinless in the Flesh, which He achieved because Jesus, the Son of God, is GOD in the Flesh! Who came to save us, Eternally from our Sins. Love and Peace.

I don’t know that he was implying if you’re a “lazy Christian” you’ll lose your salvation and go to hell. As a Calvinist he can’t believe that. But it could rock many a Christian’s assurance.
