Love this bird, love the video! l can never decide if I want to paint expressionistic with glowing colors, strong contrast, sharp edges like Tom Shepherd (he also posted a video of a goldfinch) or more impressionistic like you with softer colors, small strokes and dabs and careful execution - careful is probably the wrong word - I am sure Tom takes care too but in a different way . I loved the podcast you did together on creative perspectives - lots of intesting contents and good advice!

Hi Lily, yes Tom and I are very different, but great mates. My advice would be, do not try and be either, just do... Just be yourself and paint it will come out the way it was meant to. Hope that might help, cheers Paul

After posting the comment I figured you would probably say that, and you are right. I suppose I just have to paint more, think less and enjoy the journey! Thanks, Paul Also, trying to emulate Tom's washes just eats up my paint like crazy - I still have to get better at controlling the paint, the water and the paper and their relation to each other (watercolor clock) before getting into that - but the tension and drama deep shadows and stark contrast create fascinates me to no end. It seems hopeless. I guess I just have to let the bird I am painting, tell me how it would like to appear on my paper - with a splash or soft and gentle :-)
