I shoot with a Zf, and the Z6iii seems like a pretty on-par/above-par companion camera to go with it. I do think the habit of making the dual slots different formats is very weird (the Zf records SD and microSD). I've never had LUTs in-camera, so I'm fairly used to going without, but it would be a really nice addition! All I need from Nikon now is to give the Zf a firmware update for half-press to zoom out :'D

@@BryanKeithPhoto It's not overrated when a card gets corrupted and you lose your entire wedding. I've had a CF Express Type B card fail before. Luckily it was for photo only so I had the SD card as a backup.

This camera is basically perfect for my needs, but the no dual recording video is a deal breaker. As a solo shooter, I can't take a chance on shooting to only one card, when countless other brands offer the option for dual video recording. It's literally the only thing holding me back from going all in on Nikon. Awesome camera though!

No camera under 3k USD has dual recording, not even Eos R5 so whether it can dual record or not it doesn't matter coz the competition also doesn't, just check the 6k raw and other most important things you need, hope this helps 🎉

The internet is packed with videographers asking about how to recover images and video from their SD card (especially from Sony cameras), but, so it appears, very few from Nikon users. That might be due to the fact that the Z-series from the beginning could only take the larger, and much more reliable, XQD and later on, CFexpress B, cards. From my experience with Nikon Z-cameras, I don't need a second card slot.

I've used the Sony A1 and A74 at 4k 60 and they overheat. A1 overheart after 10 minutes or so. A74 overheat while I'm shooting 1080p. Give me the Nikon please

@@francis2339 Watch Nikon z9 lab test review on Cine5d. Look particularly at the lattitude test vs every other Sony prior to the Burano. Nikon z9, solid 8 stops that can go to 9. All other Sony sensor based cameras between 7 and eight. Nikon has a problem from their very contrasty Nikon Nlog.

I own an A7iv and it has only overheated one single time in 3 years, and it was shooting xavcs-i 4k for over an hour, handheld in the summer on a hot day… also out of all the test videos on yt showing that the a1 doesn’t overheat… I’m gonna believe them over you lol.. You dont have to use or even like Sony, but at at least be honest about the fact that they are extremely capable, well-made cameras.

@@RustyShackleford9000 I largely agree, but I genuinely believe that Sony has a problem with software or quality control. I owned an A7IV and was incredibly disappointed by its thermal performance too (even with the thermal limit set to high). I had it in a large church with decent air circulation on a tripod during a summer day recording a ceremony at 4k 24p, and it overheated approximately an hour in. Mine wasn’t so bad that it overheated doing 1080p, but it definitely made the camera unusable for long-form content. I’m happy that you got lucky with your A7IV, but after wielding two A6300s, an A7SIII, and the A7IV over the years, it seems like getting a camera with solid thermal performance is a genuine gamble with Sony. The only one that didn’t have problems was the A7SIII (thank God, that thing is the messiah of video cameras).

2 hours and 5 minutes record time? Remember until recently you had a 30 minute limit. 2 hr 5 minutes is way long enough for anything I’ve ever recorded. I’ve been a photographer since 1981. Of course I’ve been a digital shooter since the early 2000’s. I shoot a ton every week. I’ve never had a card go bad. If that’s the major reason for not going with a camera that only shoots video to a single camera, so be it. I’m very comfortable shooting to a single card or SSD. There are plenty of things that can go wrong when shooting video. Mine has never been a memory card.

I think it's important to consider that the different levels of warnings MAY do different levels of damage to the camera in the long run. Think dried heat sink paste etc. So while these figures ARE excellent, one wouldn't want to drive the camera into the red on a regular basis. Also choosing the memory card with the lowest heat generation (Delkin Black for example), will be beneficial for long term reliability.

Very nice review! I really feel that in 2024, we shouldn't be paying $2500 for a camera that cannot record video or photos to dual cards, specially if you are buying for professional work that cannot be re-shoot, like a wedding for example. This is one of the main reason why I am selling my Pocket6k Pro, and I will probably not pull the trigger on this camera unless they unlock the dual recording feature like Canon eventually did with the R5.

Competitors do not allow dual recording. Guys, think for a second here. Look at the codecs, containers and frame rate of the camera. Why on earth, would it dual record to a type b and then an SD card? Help that make sense. Buy a Cine camera if that’s important to you. Canon R5 doesn’t even dual record. Stop it man, it’s not an issue, it’s just a common sense thing. Be happy they at least gave you all those goodies in the camera, which let’s admit, none of you won’t end up using the features anyway, it’s just to geek out over specs.

The problem with relying on 32-bit float is that you can end up either under driving or over driving the mic capsule which leaves you with a pristine recording of a mic working outside its sweet spot for sound pressure. Plus for a lot of commercial work you still have to deliver in 24-bit. So learning how to gain stage properly on set (or at a wedding) is still an essential skill.

Hey Matt, I found a manufacturing error Nikon refused to acknowledge in my z9, z8, and og z6 regarding audio - there is bleed between left and right through the 3.5mm jack, meaning it is effectively useless with jam sync timecode like tentacle sync mkii because the timecode bleeds into the scratch track. It means if there's drift you have no fallback. Did you experience this with the z6iii?

we tested timecode with the Z6iii and it worked fine using the tentacle to jam sync the audio. Synced up fine in post. Could one of your units just be faulty? I havent tried it on the Z8 though.

Far from an expert but I thought that the volume needs to be reduced so it doesn't bleed. The other way to get around audio bleed is only jam sync at the start and then disconnect it. As long as you aren't filming lots of small clips. Also believe timecode doesn't prevent drift, you need a camera with genlock which none of these type of cameras have.

No dual recording is a dealbreaker. I'm in my third year in my photo/video journey, and I already had a card failure. Unrecoverable photos and videoclips on it. Glad I bought dual card slot cameras that actually can save to both cards. It can be the best camera ever if it doesn't have this feature it's basically a single card slot camera therefor not a professional tool. Or at least not for the kind of work that you cannot repeat.

Even if I would buy I would wait for people who do longer term reviews, these are just a preview of every think that's good without real world usage. One clear trade off it doesn't have good enough internal stab like Panasonic to use without a gimbal. Also the 1 card recording. It's ok not a deal breaker.

I shoot entire wedding in 8k raw with z8, at the end of the day I use around 800gb (but at the end of the day I shoot h265). I use 1tb that cost me 300$ canadian dollars, and 2x 12tb hard drive that cost me 400$ canadian dollar… I think that 6k raw will take less storage… It’s not so expensive… When I finish to edit a wedding, I transform all footage to h265, for backup and save it for 2 years… When I shot first in nraw I never shot h265 anymore as raw is so good

CFx-B is inherently more stable than SD cards. So maybe they figured it’s not needed. That said, I own a Z8 & Z9 and Atomos Ninja V. If I ‘need’ dual recording I record to the Ninja V. Ceremony, speeches etc.

@@kifley19 really not a problem. I’ve had industry acquaintances (whose other brands) have the mother board fail in their camera, battery errors, over heat shut downs, lens error. All where dual recording doesn’t help. CFx-B architecture is such that you may lose a file. The loss of an entire card is statistically less than dropping your camera after tripping over their family dog.

to late now, had to jump to sony years ago because of my Z6 many short-comings- 25 years w Nikon but couldn't shoot video like a sony & new lens tech took forever !!!

dont be overwelmed ...sony will probably answer to this.... and then canon maybe and then panasonic ...i mean this never ends .... some brand is far way ahead, others catch up ...imo sony is the one that leads atm ... but when nikon does this they have to make somethng equal or better

@@harryvuemedia5106 first of all better ergonomics including weather sealing. Then the af is also on par, general Settings are easier, switching from video to photo is done instantly with the settings being diffrent from photo/Video. And the xqd cards are a lot faster and safer. Loading your pictures/Videos on your Computer is so much faster. Also better image stabilization. So basicly using the two cameras in the real world makes s huge diffrence. The one is a toy, the otherone a tool to work with

@@harryvuemedia5106 sorry I thought I replied. But basicly the ergonomics is just a lot better on the Nikon including weather sealing. After the Firmware 3, the af is on par with the Sony. Altough its sometimes a bit off in very dark Situations like a club. The xqd cards are safer than sd and just in general a lot quicker. This also benefits you, when you need to Transfer files in a hurry. If you are a Hybrid shooter, its a lot faster and to change between Photo and Video with the settings staying diffrent for photo/Video. The one is a tool made for working, the otherone feels like a toy. The sony is not bad, but dont underestimate Nikon because of the memes

As a long time Nikon user, I’m “meh” about this new articulating screen. As soon as you insert a USB-C cable or HDMI cable, there goes the ability to have it swivel up or down when in the out position.

usually if you use the HDMI out, you are using a monitor and not the articulating screen anymore for viewing.

@@Whiteinrevery Well said, the amount of complain people have reached is unbelievable. Man you get 6k raw video in the palm of your hand for 2.5k USd, and you keep complaining. Go buy a video camera for factor for 2.3.10x more if you don't want this.
