During my solo traveling in Portugal, I spent a week in the Lapoint surf camp learning again how to surf, meeting new friends, and dancing Samba.
Traveling solo makes me step back from my everyday lifestyle and look at things through a different lens. I self-reflect a lot and try on cities as if they were my consistent home. I love the feeling of novelty. It brings creativity, always. As I need to think of ways to make myself at home and seek comfort in the unknown. Portugal became home very quickly. The Atlantic Ocean is now home. The friendly Portuguese waves in the summer welcomed another novice surfer.

Nice video. Why are the trails and beach so empty? Looks like this was filmed during summer? Peace!

Thank youu! It was filmed in late May. The beach and the trails near the camp weren't busy at all. During very early mornings, I could have the entire beach to myself sometimes.. unless there is a group doing an early surf session.

@@anastasia_levin Wow that's cool. I want to visit Ericeira so bad! Do you need a wetsuit year-round or does the water get warm? What do you think are some downsides to actually living there? Thanks again for replying and aloha.

@@nandonando4421 From what I heard from the surfer in Ericiera, the water does get warmer in the summer (the warmest month is August) but not too warm. The Atlantic Ocean is pretty cold all year round. Some people don't wear wetsuits in the summer but others do. Depends on how tolerant are you to cold. I think you should def visit first before moving. I really loved everything about this lil town but I don't think I could live there full time as It doesn't have the same convenience (everything closes early- the first thing I noticed) as a big city but that's its charm too. The work opportunities are slim in town unless you work remotely. I would feel a bit more socially connected if I knew Portuguese, not everyone speaks English but everyone is super friendly! Aloha *Feels like you might be from Hawaii trying to switch to the Atlantic Ocean hah

Would you say that lapoint is solo traveler friendly? Did you feel that everyone stayed together?
@anastasia_levin
@anastasia_levin 3 ай бұрын
Definitely, yes! When I travelled there, most of the people I made friends with travelled solo. There are a lot of activities that require everyone’s participation so it definitely felt like we were all boiling together most of the time.

Where on the east coast of Canada? There are places where it is possible to surf there, but at least when I was growing up, there was nowhere to learn it. I tried it on the Baltic Sea in the north of Poland, which has quite similar conditions.

Back then I lived in Toronto. Not really on the coast. Only Lake Ontario. I’m curious now tho. Where did you notice surfing on the east? also never knew there is surfing in Poland too 🫣 where on the Baltic Sea?

@@anastasia_levin The most well-known place is Lawrencetown, Nova Scotia (near Halifax), but most of the Nova Scotia coastline and a few spots on the Bay of Fundy coast in Southern New Brunswick have sufficient waves. But the only people who ever surfed there were those who lived and had learned it elsewhere and had moved to the Maritimes for other reasons. I was born in New Brunswick but moved to Ottawa at age 18, and many years later, I moved to Poland.

@@anastasia_levin In Poland, the best areas are along the coast between Władysławowo and Kołobrzeg, where the coastline has a partial west-facing exposure, where there are waves about 50% of the time. But annoyingly, most of the schools are based along the Chałupy-Jastarnia coast, and many only open in July and August, which are the months that waves are only suitable for children. This latter area can receive larger swells (2-3 m), but much less often than the Ustka-Kołobrzeg coastline. Interestingly, the number of surf schools in Poland has declined, losing clientele to week-long organised surf camps in the Portugal/Canary Islands/Morocco area with the rise of budget airlines, and rising living standards now making Poland more expensive than those aforementioned destinations. Given the above, I am curious as to what your questions were to Lapoint regarding lesson objectives and your history of surf lessons in the past before booking?
@anastasia_levin
@anastasia_levin 10 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for this info! Super helpful! I did contact Lapoint before booking to check what are the best months to surf in the area. Which was May and October for not bad consistent waves + still warm weather. In the summer months, it could be flat for some time so coming for only a week to surf could be risky. They also had a few groups based on levels which was great! I could climb up a level if they had available spots.

October should be great as you will catch better ways in October probably than any summer month and you are in a wetsuit anyways. That thing is very hot. Enjoy your trip ✨

I would say mid-20s including the hosts. Everyone has a good vibe, so I would say the age gaps was not an issue at all for me as I was in my late 20s. There were a lot of groups of 20-year-olds too. @@msfa2004
