Khalilah! I think so much of it is just prioritising. We decide what things are important to us, and if we are conscious and deliberate and know what these things are, we can make sure we make time for them. There are definitely things I wish I spent more time on, and which other people will manage to juggle. So it's so unhelpful to compare how "much" two people are doing. Because we're all doing such different things! But thank you so much or your lovely words and it means so much that you might read my book if it ends up being published :)x

I CAN’T WAIT, I CAN’T WAIT AAAAAAHHHH. You inspired me to pursue knowledge, academia (in my own rebellious way, since I’m really critical of the way academic systems such as universities work) and, specially, writing. I’ve got to admit, your style is much more ✨british countryside✨ than mine, but your passion and authenticity have allowed me to imagine. After a long year of being crushed by school, with no motivation, no light, only working because I had to, I had vacations during quarantine. That’s when I found you, and it was like someone had tapped me on the shoulder and said: “Hey. It’s ok now. You’re safe. You can dream, imagine, learn and create, and no one can restrict you with due dates or threats of grading you terribly. All of that is gone now. You’re safe”. It was really comforting (I apologize if the paragraph above has grammar mistakes, not a native english speaker). Thank you, Ruby. 💖

Hey Ruby - not sure whether you have encountered him already, but I would seriously recommend taking Robert McKee's 'Story' seminar - he's based in the USA, but usually gives them twice a year in London. It might seem like the seminars are primarily aimed at screenwriters, but they're not: I met many novelists and even a scenario-writer for ballet when I took the seminar a few years back. The man is a genius and gives you such a brilliant understanding of how stories work. It's like seeing a master craftsman take apart a Swiss watch, explain the mechanism, show you how to build it yourself and then put it back together again. (Good call on Glossier, by the way - I use their Boy Brow to tame my unruly male eyebrows!).

It’s so nice to see the amazing woman you’ve become. I’m very excited for your book. I’ve been following you since before you were doing your GCSEs and you’ve been one of my first productivity inspirations. It was refreshing to see that those who got good grades work really hard, when a lot of the time people just put it down to being very clever. My first book was published last year, my second one is coming out this year. I just sent new edits off to my publisher today, so this is perfect timing! As someone who is about your age (I’m 21 and just finished uni like you!) and has been through the process, I get how nerve-racking it can be, and my advice would be 1) go with a publisher who you get on well with and who you like the books of 2) don’t forget to check silly things like spelling, typos, your name etc 3) be proud 4) enjoy the process and make sure you have a book launch! 5) don’t read it looking for mistakes after it is published and 6) make sure you are getting paid properly (at least 10% royalties). Holding my book in my hand for the first time was the best moment of my life and I’m honestly so pleased I went with my publisher and got a good amount of control over the finished product ☺️

It can be possible. At least in my country, you start uni at 18 years old and most of the degrees lasts 4 years. So if you have your birthday at the end of the year, you start with 17 and finish with 21

I’m writing a novel and although I’m nearing the end of my first draft, I’m struggling with self-confidence, which often makes it hard just to motivate myself to keep working. Then there’s the fact that I have 4 kids, so it can be challenging to just find the time to write. In one way, I fell utterly excited for you. On the other hand, it is kind of bittersweet because I've been working on a series for publishing for years now and it is never really... Happening. I feel not so great about htat last part. I usually tell people "Well, it's not yet ready." or "Not the right time". Truth is, while I know my story by heart I can't translate it the way I want to into paper/ laptop / words. It's getting closer but not right yet. And I've been working on it since I was 14.
