Thanks for the video mate, living in Emerald now but looking to FIFO WA. I never really noticed a difference but it's best practice to put your washing powder/detergent in top load machines first. As the water fills it will dissolve the powder sooner and start cleaning sooner as opposed to waiting for the water level to get up the top Cheers

I always wondered what life in the mines would be like. I worked offshore for many years and I would say you guys have a harder gig. I think it’s more geared for you to make money faster and get out of it. I think your rota was 4/1 ours is usually 2/2 3/3 4/4 or 2/3 if you are core crew in Norway they done some rotas like 2/2 then 2/4. Also we don’t cook, clean or do washing after a 12 hour shift and alcohol is a total no no. So I think offshore is better long term but mines possibly better to get money made faster but no way could you keep it up with a wife and family for very long. All the best lads stay safe 👍🏻

G’day mate, yes there are companies (some of which you’ll find on seek) who offer traineeships. You could also aim for an apprenticeship if looking for a trade. I’m not sure if they’d offer a traineeship or apprenticeship on a short term basis though.

Brit here who's currently expatting in the mining industry (Africa). The cons: 5am starts, long work days (can be very long), working on your weekends, shitty camps/small room/food (sometimes), away from family and friends. Also depends on where you work in the world.... I'm normally locked in on the mine site for months on end with no chance to leave due to security problems outside so civilization and creature comforts are not possible here. All seems a world away from the snowflake and 1st world problrms of Oz mines lol. Pros:salary, chance to travel and a good work rotation (few weeks off every couple of months) Lots of comments from outsiders wanting to get into this lifestyle just be warned, it's not easy money...

G’day mate, I remember that chat, I get it quite often on the chilling with Keithy chat from Facebook. The reason you won’t get the job for only a short period of time (agreed contracts excluded) is that the cost of simple training and inductions to have a worker ready to go, costs more than it does to have someone who is working for a long period of time. If you found a contract (say for example a 6 month role), they would agree on a pay and contract conditions which could save them money.

You are right. They vary, but usually it’ll be a fixed term, 6 months, one year or two years. Any more than that and it wouldn’t be worthwhile to the employee (because unless agreed upon, your pay will not change, therefore, no raises).

For all the uneducated people watching this, in nsw mining you can earn an ABSOLUTE MINIMUM of $55 an hour as a garbage tradesman straight out of your apprenticeship. $67.50 if you have experience, either way your home with you family and expensive toys every night. Thanks Keithy , love ya

G’day Old Mate 😄 You’d go great on a gang of contractors if you’re an approachable fella with a good work ethic (which sounds exactly like you 😀). There are heaps of mining contract companies around Oz, so you’re spoilt for choice where you get started.

Also regarding Salary - to those who might be attracted to the good salaries, I will say this - the mining industry has a nasty habit of boom and bust, rarely somewhere in between so always have one eye on the money saved. Call me cautious but only until you've been through a bust you'll know the feeling, 2014/2015 was pretty shit all round for finding work in particular for new starters. The high salaries might look good but over the long run be prepared for some time out of work.

G’day mate, you’re right it definitely seems like the Driller Offsider role is a crowd favourite at the moment. There are heaps more roles available than just this that’s for sure. It can be hard to get into the industry with no prior mining experience - don’t let that throw you off. A lot of the agencies like to see if their prospective employees are in for the long haul by holding off from simply throwing them straight into a job. They like to get to know who they’re working with. If you put yourself in a debt-collector type position and stay onto them, they’ll see how keen you are to get in. You’re at a great age mate, you still have a heap going for you to any employer in any position at 32 years young! You might be competing with all ages for a driller offsider role, but ability will out-rank it every time over age. I hope the job hunt goes well and starts heading up for you mate. Cheers Keithy

It’s not an easy job, nor is there much time to just smell the roses. It’s constant go go go. As far as entry level, it’s on a lot of folks list. There are plenty of other jobs, it depends on where you want to work.

G’day Jamie, cheers for singing out mate 👍🏻 I hope your search is coming along well! There will be a fair amount of jobs cooking in the mines. Most (but not all) mines have mining camps. They are basically an off-site hotel. The kitchen has a big job feeding hundreds of workers and staff many times a day. From what I’ve heard, the pay can be good, but isn’t quite up there compared to the fancy restaurants in the cities. The work is demanding and repetitive, but the roster is good if you enjoy a solid time off work.

G’day mate, Food and accomodation in FIFO is covered by the company, but things like laundry and luxury items (like alcohol or soft drinks, etc) are not. Some mines will launder the clothing, but only usually in the lead/zinc game. Usual mining camps have a tennis court, pool, pool tables and a bar, and a football area. Some have more, some have less - they’re all different!

Hey mate, it’s hard to give the right answer to your question - there are heaps of things you could do to up-skill for a job in the mines. The most basic start for any role would be to do an induction and basic first aid course. There are often beginner roles advertised on websites such as seek.com, that might be able to guide you into your perfect position 👌

i’m a 23 year old mechanical fitter from the UK currently working as a ministry of defence contractor (nuclear submarine manufacturing). currently saving for my skilled worker visa and then going to try and save maybe £10-15k and then make the jump to perth and pay for my tickets (white card, confined space w/ gas, working at heights) and then hopefully get a FIFO job in the mines. G’day mate, you have the right idea to up skill yourself. To get into the mining industry, you won’t need a white card. The hard part is getting an apprenticeship. Usually the intakes start later in the year, and wrap up early the next year. If you time it right you might be lucky. Age shouldn’t be an issue.

Cheers mate I could speculate but the wages are different in different states. The cost of living in Western Australia often also sees a higher wage. It will be over $100k per annum that’s for sure.

G’day mate, I think there will definitely still be a place for you in the mines with learning deficiencies. Finding them, I’m unsure of the path you might need to take in terms of getting through an agency if necessary, or perhaps making a prospective employer know when you apply for jobs you’re interested in. You might find that you’re not alone with regards to slow learning.

G’day Coby! There are lots of ways to get into the mines. The easiest way is to work out what you’re good at, including any equipment skills and tickets you might have, and go search for jobs online. You could also go to a labour hire company and get a gig bouncing around the different mines for shutdown work. Yes, the pay is good, but keep in mind you will work for it - nothing comes for free. You’ll do big days, long times away from home and hard/hot work in confined places. I’ve heard from many people over the years who go for a mining job just like yourself (looking at money only) and don’t last 6 months. It’s not just free money! You’ll need a drivers licence, I’d imagine in your case you’re still on a P licence? It shouldn’t matter, but you do need to be able to legally drive, and be drug and alcohol free. The mines will cover the cost of plane tickets from a base location (so that will be a major town). They also cover the cost of food and accomodation. If you’re with a contracting company, sometimes you have to supply your own food. At home, the costs are all yours. You need to pay your bills and food costs. Cheers Keithy

Thanks Lisa! That’s where the mine is (well, it’s about 50km out of Cloncurry), great guess. I don’t live there though, I’m over on the coast. Tips for a woman, go for it! I was talking with a lad the other day about a similar question, he was asking about getting a job for himself and his wife. Women can do as much as men, with the exception of operating things that are physically dangerous to the special parts of the body (some mobile equipment and plant). I say go for it 😀

G’day mate, great questions! Your apprenticeship may/may not be transferable. Given yours is civil, you will likely need to complete modules to suit the mining electrical side of things, potentially a year or two more as an apprentice over here. That’s a good question for an employer directly. As far as snakes go, they love the heat, so you’ll find them around in the mines quite a lot, but depending on where you live in Aus, you may or may not see them at home. They like heat, so the further north you are, the more likely you are to see them at home.

G’day Reuben, cheers for the comment mate. Welcome back when you get here 😁 I reckon the best advice I can give is to play to your strengths and aim for something that you’ll be good at. If you’re a cluey lad and good with your hands, age-depending you could set your sights on an apprenticeship even? You can jump on the Google and case out any generic inductions that you might be able to do as well, and OHS courses. They are definitely handy to have on the resume. Another good thing is to case out the job listings and see what the mining companies are looking for in a particular role you might be interested in. Experience aside, you might be able to tick a few extra boxes there with things like HR licences (if you were looking at truck driving), forklift tickets, or even crane tickets - although the latter can be costly to obtain. I don’t specialise in any of the ticket type stuff, I’m just average Joe offering my personal advice and opinions 😁 I hope I’ve been of some help mate 👍

G’day mate, congrats on landing a gig in the mines! A suitcase will do the job, depending on how much you think you’ll need out there. I usually take a small backpack with a few pairs of underwear, and a phone charger. It’s up to you if you need to take any other personal items. You’ll definitely want to take work socks too, they won’t supply them. I usually wear a wife beater (singlet) under my work clothes - nipple chaff is a thing for blokes too, especially in new uniforms. Probably a good idea to bring soap and shampoo, a toothbrush and toothpaste too just in case they don’t supply it mate. That’s a deadly roster! Haven’t seen too many places doing 3/1 lately. I sometimes drive from the camp to work, other times I catch the bus. It depends on the week really. Good luck at Olympic mate, I’ve heard it’s a great place to work. Keep me posted on how you go 👍

I’m a technician by base, but I also manage safety as a workers representative (so I work with and for workers as a representative and a worker myself), along with mentoring workers on the job. Almost like a worker who mentors if that makes sense.

G’day mate, we have a few here, the part I can’t confirm on is the visa stuff. I’m not sure if there’s a sort of visa that needs to be sorted in order to work in AU. As a mechanical engineer you will have no trouble finding work. You might even jump up the ladder quite quickly with that certification. It’s a matter of working out the Visa, then searching for jobs. Sorry I can’t help much with the visa stuff mate.

If you jump on the web and find out what type of job you’d like to do, you can get yourself targeting whatever the mines are asking you to prepare in order to land a job. That could be something simple like safety training, or it could be something like pre mining plant or truck courses.

There is at the mine camps mate. Not all of them are the same, some newer exploration type camps don’t have dining rooms and bars. The established mine camps do though. It’s a good question to ask or research for any mine you’re going for a job at.

There’s a visa needed to work here, I’m not entirely sure on which one (that’s not my specialty!), and you’d have to reside in Australia to work in the mines as well. I’m not too sure on the plumber role. It doesn’t lead to a lot of jobs in the mine, although at your age it would be easy to get an apprenticeship as a fitter in the fixed plant and get your hands working 👍🏻
