This was so lovely, please do more. Top tip: when I studied Paradise Lost and was really struggling with it, my lecturer told me to read it aloud. So in desperation I found myself, with a weak and wavering voice, beginning to read this epic poem alone in my bedroom. By the end of that book, I found myself striding back and forth across my bedroom reveling in and understanding every word. So if you ever get stuck, or unmotivated try that, you might surprise yourself 😊😂

Oooh I do this too! I'm trying to read more classics this year and if I'm struggling then reading aloud helps so much! 😁
@fabricio_santana3 жыл бұрын
Good tip! I think reading aloud is most important for identifying the tone (whether a sentence is meant to be serious, humorous, ironic, etc). Because sometimes you look a long, complex sentence and, in the process of figuring out its meaning, focus so much in the purely mechanical aspects of language, that you become blind to the naturality of it.
@hannahlikestoread2 жыл бұрын
As a Sophomore in high school we are reading Paradise Lost and your advice is VERY helpful. I dont understand every theme Milton is trying to push but if i read it out loud i can understand it!

I find that helps with Shakespeare too. But poetry in general is best read out loud in my opinion. :D

I'm a third year Civil Engineering, and now the lessons are getting more technical. I have found out, and become more certain that taking literature could have the best major for me. I'm not enjoying my lessons now, but instead I just read novels instead of hydraulics and stuffs. Shifting is not a good choice now I guess. It seems not practical, especially here in Philippines. Just want to share it in this community since I can't express things to my friends 😊.

I felt the same way when I studied business. I didn't enjoy it at all. I would have switched to a liberal arts major but we can't afford it and I would lose my scholarship. I'm now working for 3 years and I realized that the boring business degree I hold is actually pretty helpful in my job. I do a bit of reading and writing on the side as a way to de-stress. I suggest you finish engineering and try your best to learn it as much as you can even when you don't enjoy it because it would come in handy in your future endeavours. You can learn about literature on your free time after work. The good thing is, you can afford the books that you want when you're working. haha So cheer up. Laban lang.

I feel the same! I'm currently a second year student in BS Psychology and I realize how much I love literature over science studies. I would love to read fiction over our lectures too, and yes the pressure of shifting here is so hard 😭

@@refought1784 Yes, laban lang. It's so difficult to find a decent job these days. Even with a college diploma, you could hardly find a good-paying job especially if you're new to the workforce. @@ruo-ye Huhu I love psychology. When I was in college, I wanted to take Psych but it's not offered in the nearby school. I wanted to become a clinical psychologist since there aren't a lot of them in my country. I hope you rekindle your interest in psychology as it's a very interesting and useful field. @@PYKTube I did my bachelors in Literature but didn’t have a good time. I did the theory then and you’re right it did change my life. Ive since reflected on it and have let go of many of the beliefs that seemed compelling to me at the time. There’s a very dominant feminist-Marxist tilt to Lit (or maybe the social sciences in general) which I have now come to see as a problem. I tend more to the liberal-humanist perspective but regardless of my personal preference, forcing a belief onto impressionable minds (or even limiting the interpretation of a text to one perspective and claiming it’s superiority) is plain wrong.

as someone who's planning on starting my english degree next year these vlogs are delightful to watch! it's so interesting to hear about what kind of essays you have to write and how you go about it all. even though the things that you study will likely differ quite a bit from what i'll have to study next year, watching these videos is making me so excited to become an english major (even though the work load is daunting lol) also these vlogs mean even more to me because i'm someone who suffers from a brain injury, which plays a big role in how i have to organise all my school stuff. knowing you deal with similar issues make these kinds of vlogs more impactful to me. often when i watch study vlogs, i have this voice in the back of my head going "ok but u wouldn't be able to handle the way they go about studying, due to your brain injury" and it always makes me feel more distant from the whole academic world, even though i love learning and studying with my whole heart. so watching someone who has to organise their school and way of studying around their "cognitive issues" is a big comfort to me. (even when you don't make those things explicit parts of your vlogs!) when i watch these vlogs i just get to be excited about school and studying without constantly feeling like i'm "a different case" because of my brain injury.

I still have to do English for GCSE (exams at 16 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland), which I just hate, it's so boring and arbitrary, I will never need to know how to write an essay about Shakespeare, poems, A Christmas Carol or an Inspector Calls. It's not that I don't or can't appreciate and enjoy reading and literature, but doing it in an academic way with essay after essay is my idea of a nightmare - double English on Thursday afternoon week B is just abject misery. I definitely won't be doing it at A level or at university (we don't have majors, and minors here, you just study 1 subject, though sometimes chosen modules can include other things, such as beginner level foreign languages)
