P.S. All home cooks and aspiring chefs worth their salt are aiming for food that taste like what our moms made for us when we were little. So it’s extra cool watching an actual mom rock out in the kitchen for a change with the legit sound of kids in the background. Respect. 😊

So agree with you! Isn't she the best family-kitchen chef on the internet?! Love how the baby gets so much bonding and rocking as she works away in her home-schooled environment. No frills, No fuss! Just as she is doing, my mom taught me how to clean (never wash with soap) the skillets (we all inherited) and it has been my kitchen treasure! Respect indeed! 🤓🤩

I’ve watched A LOT of videos about cast iron- I’ve always been a little scared of not following rules, cleaning, etc etc. This is probably the best and most easy to follow video. I love this approach and it’s definitely not as intimidating as I had thought! Thank you!!

I had a glass stove top and I used my cast iron pans all the time. It scratched the heck out of it but I didn’t care. I love my cast iron pans. My friends and family were kinda freaked out about it, but I figure it’s my stove, it was paid for, my pans, my life. And they certainly enjoyed what whatever came out those pans. So it’s all good.☺️

Just want to say thank you LIsa, thank you for passing on your knowledge in such an easy to understand way. Tonight as I am taking my sourdough bagels...puffed up high and beautiful....my two loaves of beautifully designed sourdough bread...and I too have cast iron that I use way more after being inspired by you....I thought of you tonight in total gratitude. I am much older than you and have learned so much from you. I miss the small woman’s groups that use to gather to share fun and knowledge. I am thinking of having a few friends over to share what I have learned from you in sourdough bread making. I have had a small group over that I taught how to make kombucha...we are bonded by our kombucha brewing. Love you and appreciate all that you do.

Thank you! I've repeated these steps so many times only to have someone scrub away all my seasoning (again). NOW I can show them this video. The only thing I do differently is I use a chainmail scrubber. I find it to be a lot more durable and easy to work with (doesn't get food bits caught inside and very finish-friendly). Found mine online. AND shout out for your seasoning oil recipe. Works GREAT and is a thoughtful gift as well.

The thing that made the biggest difference with cleaning my cast iron was making sure the pan is still hot when I clean it, think like cooking bacon and pancakes on a griddle , moving the finished food to a platter. Then immediately cleaning the griddle, before you eat. Just quickly with a green scouring pad and water. Then immediately back to the stove , which is still hot enough to dry it properly, but no risk of leaving the stove on. Which I’ve done many a time before lol

This is how I treat my cast iron pans which I received when my Dad passed away. They are from 1959. Still going strong. I also liveaboard a sailboat where there is a lot of humidity and I have no problems with them, but like you, Lisa, I use them every day. I do keep mine in my galley oven though which may protect them somewhat from extra humidity.

HI , I enjoy your seasoning videos. I watched a few others and one lady said that you should season new pans 4 or 5 time in a row, so it took her 2 days to season, and also she said that you should only use Flaxseed oil. That oil is more expensive and goes rancid before I use it again. I like Coconut oil, in fact I use it as a make-up remover, and also as a moisturizer . Just a few tiny dots around eyes, on forehead, cheeks, a little more on my neck. It doesn’t leave your skin sticky, or greasy, then apply make-up!!

Good morning beautiful ❤️ Whenever I get the notification of a new video from your channel, I always need to set the scene or stage ready for the video to take place or I always have these ideas in my head about what the scene should take place as if it were happening. For example your videos remind me of chamomile, lavender, the color beige, fresh brewed coffee with no creamer, candle lights, a fresh clean breeze coming through the windows, sage, dim lighting, calmness, sunshine, peace, optimism, curiosity, family, friendship, non-judgment, hope, and patience. Now I may be wrong but this is how I perceive and how I feel every time I watch your videos and it puts me in the best mindset. Also, I never feel anxious, worried, distraught, hurt, envious, resentful, or start wishing I had or was... I'm totally happy just being me watching your content and that doesn't always happen on KZbin, because there are a lot of channels that show off a lifestyle and it makes you want those things, but when I watch your channel I don't feel that way I feel so much peace and calmness and gratitude and all I want to do is share that Joy I experience from your videos with others. Great information . . two things that might be considerations for some folks . .. cast iron pans are a lot heavier than stainless steel so that might be a factor for anyone with arthritis or for safety for children using them. Secondly, we eat a lot of fish and I've found that you must put soap on the pan to remove the fish smell and aroma. I only use plant based kitchen soaps and if used sparingly it should not damage the seasoning.

I am a casual user of cast iron pans, but a couple issues have prevented me from taking it to the next level. (1) if you choose to put a cast iron pan away for storage, how do you prevent the oil coating from getting your cabinets greasy and, worse yet, attracting bugs or other critters? (2) If you wipe it with a tea towel, how do you ever get that towel clean? In my experience, it never comes clean in the wash. Furthermore, most clothes washers come with a warning not to wash anything that has been coated in oil, *even cooking oil*. For this reason, I have switched to paper towels for drying and wiping cast iron, but this is an imperfect and aggravating solution because it is incredibly wasteful and expensive.

So helpful to watch. I have a glass top stove and wondered about the cast iron on it. I have four different size Griswold (sp?) skillets that have not been used since we switched to a glass top stove. We raised five that are all grown and wish like crazy that I would have had someone like you to inspire me to cook. The kids did not starve, but I was woefully inadequate in the cooking department. My mother was not a cook, and her mother was not a cook. Learned a lot from my husband and his family. They were all good at it. His mom taught my girls, so they were better prepared. Love your channel. Thanks for taking the time to share with us. One more thing. Have not tried the sourdough. Very appealing process. I am GF, so need to look at that closer. Random comment. Sorry. 😁

Hello, I have a glass top stove and we've been using cast iron for quite a few years now. It does not cause any problems. This is SO helpful! I get some sticking, especially with eggs! I'm trying really hard not to buy a non stick pan for those. What temp do you cook your eggs at? Medium?

Cast iron is my favorite! It's so easy to take care of! I've been using it my whole life because my parents used it too. I have some of my grandma's. I season in the hot oven after I'm done cooking, lids and all.

Are there some things you don't cook on cast iron pans? For example if you're making a sauce-y pasta, is there a point where you'd say this is too wet and potentially harming the seasoning? Tomatoes for example I have been told not to cook in cast iron as it could remove the non stick coating. Thoughts?

My husband, who thinks he's a cast iron know it all🤨, will put shortening in his cast iron pans and put them away. Does anyone know what happens when you do that? The shortening becomes sticky and gross and hard to clean out. He did this to my dutch oven😤!!! It was ruined! Made him buy me a new one and he is not to touch it!!

Your vid is the best ever one does vids on what they heard but not what they know. You can tell the info they say is not first hand experience because lots of vids debunked them. Heck people would already say you using coconut oil is bad😂

I struggled with cast iron because of how heavy they are, but I do have one single skillet that I bust out when I know it’ll make whatever dish I’m making taste better. I found my sweet spot with blue carbon steel; the maintenance is similar and it still gives your food that “cooked over the campfire” taste, just lighter!

This is exactly how I use and clean/season my cast iron!! It's also the easiest tutorial on using cast iron!! Everyone always makes it seem so hard for new users.

What a great video! I’ve used mine intermittently as I lack confidence in how to care for it but this gave loads of examples. Going to work towards a full cast iron take over now! Thank you from New Zealand ❤️

I married into cast iron almost twenty years ago. My sweet husband was floored that I had never used it and taught me everything about it. It took me a bit to get used to it and it’s all I use now. I love it!

I use only cast iron skillets which are very old. inherited from my Grandmother. She taught me how to care for them. Enjoyed you going through the care of cast iron for those that may be new to using them.

My glass cooktop isn't a problem with the cast iron. I'm a rookie in using cast iron and I can't see not using it for most of my cooking. Lodge says cooking on the glass top is fine. Can I ask what brand of cast iron you use? Mine are slowly gaining a glossy look.

Great video Lisa! I actually asked my husband for a new set of cast iron for my birthday that was a bigger set than the little pans that I had. My question is since it's new it's very bumpy on the surface and will that go away as I continue to use it and become totally smooth like my other cast iron pans are? I am definitely sold on cast iron and will continue to use them either way ❤️

the bumpy surface will smooth out over time as the seasoning builds :-)

The new cast iron pans aren’t cast the same way as the old vintage ones. They will get a little smoother, but never be as smooth as the old ones. I prefer the vintage ones myself.
