Becky, if you keep a cored raw cabbage in your freezer, when you take it out and let it thaw the leaves will be soft and easy to peel and roll just like when it's been cooked.

My grandmother made stuffed cabbage with ladies in church for their harvest supper. A group of ladies would sit and roll for days in order to have enough. Stuffed cabbage is one of our family recipes - my grandmother passed it down to all of us. We add carrots to the filling to make it a little sweeter (instead of the raisins). I've totally made it w/ ground chicken or turkey, and my mother has done sausage a few times. We roast them in the oven in the big roasting pan, and served over mashed potatoes. Yum!

This is how my family has always made.them. Hi Becky, I make a lazy stuffed cabbage. I core out the middle of the cabbage leaving a cavity for the filling. I cover the opening with several whole leafs to keep the filling moist. It’s more like a stuffed cabbage head . I cover the cabbage with my sauce and bake until the filling is cooked and the cabbage is tender. I bake the cabbage in a Dutch oven so that all sides of the cabbage is evenly cooked. I slice the cabbage in wedges and cover with sauce. It doesn’t take as long to prepare and it is a pretty dish.

I agree 100 percent about the fresh tomato on the pizza... YUMMY! 😁 Also, if you want to cut a bunch of cherry tomatoes quicker, put them on your cutting board, then put a small lid on top and hold it down while you slice through them horizontally. It works great.

You brought back a nice memory for me when you used the raisins. When I was growing up My mom would make cabbage even when it wasn't stuffed and she would cook it with whole raisins. I loved it!

This was so much more enjoyable to watch than usual, you slowed down a little and didn't talk so fast that it made me nervous to the point of turning it off. Wonderful dishes, thank you for the great video!

Known as cabbage rolls growing up. I use cabbage and sauerkraut. Tomato soup is a great alternative for sauce. Wonderful flavor with sauerkraut and Campbell’s tomato soup.

This is how I make mine as well! The sauerkraut add the tartness and the tomato soup adds some sweetness.

I've just checked out about a DOZEN KZbin channels for stuffed cabbage rolls, trying to find one that reminded me of the very best cabbage rolls I used to buy at a Jewish deli that no longer exists (owner retired). Your recipe is the ONLY ONE that even comes close to theirs. So happy I kept searching...a million thanks. Will be making these soon! 💜💜

Don’t you worry about breaking things! That’s part of your charm. 🥰 Also, I had the BEST stroganoff in Hungary once. Very similar to what you made except they didn’t serve it over noodles and it had sweet gherkin pickles. Lots of them! It was really quite delicious.

Becky, you should get one of those rubber mats to put over by your stove to see if it will help when you drop a glass jar if it would keep it from breaking.

In Slovenia, we make the cabbage rolls with sauerkraut - so whole heads of cabbage are preserved and the leaves soften, so you don't need to precook the cabbage and it adds a nice acidity. :)

No tomato sauce, right? Just sauerkraut? My Godmother makes them like that and I can’t find anyone else anywhere who does it without tomato sauce.

@@ChristinaVVM There's a sort of thin sauce but definitely not as tomato-y! It's more to do with the liquid from the meat and the sauerkraut and maybe paprika? Idk. :D

Cabbage rolls are on top of the list when I do freezer meals. I also freeze pirogies, and make borscht and Cabbage Roll Soup for canning. The first thing I always do when starting new traditional dishes, is find out which of the traditional ‘comfort’ foods are good for canning/freezing. We’d be lost without Butter Chicken and Rice or Tandoori meat skewers in our freezer these days, my sons (25 & 28) wouldn’t know what to do for a midnight snack…lol

Yum! This has me craving my grandmas cabbage rolls! Basically meat loaf filling in the rolls (no raisins), covered in tomato sauce/tomatoes and topped in sauerkraut. Great idea to line the pan with cabbage! We did this too a lot of the time.

FYI. If you use a flat roaster pan, we use the oblong ones, you can put the rolls in one layer. Cooks more evenly. I'm from Pittsburgh where there is a large Polish community. Always a roaster pan.

Awesome timing with the cabbage roll recipe! We have cabbages in the garden that are heading up really nicely so this will be on the list of how to use them. Thanks Becky ☺

My favorite pizza o Bo is fresh basil, cherry or grape tomatoes, onions, sliced garlic & fresh mozzarella. I like it both with sauce or just olive oil. Sometimes for a quick single I use flat bread or pita. And like you, I put the tomatoes on top to roast. Also try with sun dried tomatoes as they are so sweet.

My mom used to make stuffed cabbage when I was growing up. She cooked them in the old style pressure cooker, it was always a little scary thinking it could explode! Lol She also used tomato soup for the broth so it was sweeter. When she passed I inherited the pressure cooker and finally had gotten the nerve to make them and my Dad really appreciated that because it was a bit of Mom with him when he ate it. I used to make him freezer meals and he just loved that! Unfortunately Dad passed 3 years after Mom but I feel good knowing I was able to cook for him to help out. Food really is a labor of love.

I grew up eating cabbage rolls. I can’t wait to see what the raisins taste like in sauce. I use whatever I like for filling sausage mixed with beef or beef. Seasoning also change but always garlic and onions. I usually almost purée the onions do to kids. I always add fresh lemon juice to sauce. I cook in oven, stovetop or crockpot depending on time of year. We serve on mashed potatoes. They do freeze well either cooked or raw.
