hey Mike, I just want to say thanks for doing these, I'm a large guy (close to 400lbs) and there is something about watching you do these week ons and product reviews which is actually in the back of my mind somehow helps me enforce an aspect of portion control which actually gives me motivation and inspiration to control my portion sizes much more when i'm at home. honestly, your week on series, your ability to stick to these week ons without falling off or binge eating much like myself is very powerful to see. so even though i'm just one guy, I just wanted to say thanks for doing this, being entertaining and for doing what you do a lot of people watch man vs food and get hungry, but theres something about what you do which just works for someone like myself, I don't know if anyone else here is like that, maybe I'm on my own in these comments, but regardless i always get a kick out of these videos in a positive way, keep up the good work, you're a top bloke. please, i seriously emplore you to keep making these.

The "blue" stuff in blue cheese IS mould. It's a harmless one though (one that doesn't produce nasty toxins like the ones growing on spoilt food generally do) that turns the milk into this kind of cheese. This is how it is made. The white stuff around camembert is also mould. ^^

I don't think they changed anything in the way they are made. They used the argument in court that biscuits go soft when stale and cakes go hard when stale. Because of this jaffa cakes can't be taxed on the same tax as biscuits and should be taxed as cakes.

The thing about Asda Smart Price is that it can be a little hit and miss. The vast majority of items are decent, especially the stuff you’d expect to be crap, but there are items that are bloody awful. The blue cheese, as you experienced as one example, the hazelnut chocolate spread as another. Overall though, it is well worth giving Smart Price products a go. You can save significant amounts of money over branded stuff and sacrifice only a minor amount of flavour/quality. As an aside, the Jaffa cakes aren’t stale. Mcvities use a recipe which contains more fat (used to be hydrogenated fat before all the uproar about it) that gives them a more sponge like texture. The smart price recipe is actually more “traditional” and so is much more biscuit like in texture. Bit of a shock when you’re used to Mcvities and not expecting it, but otherwise they’re probably one of my fav of the Smart Price line.
@SimonJ576 жыл бұрын
Like when he did wheat bisks, tastes pretty much the same and spend absolute pennies compared to the practically extortionate weetabix. The Asda chocolate wheatbisks however, nah, just go with weetabix for the flavoured ones.

The ready meals could have such a long shelf life by either being packaged in an anaerobic environment such as chips (chrisps) where they package is filled with nitrogen to purge any oxygen before being sealed. It would also explain why they dont peel open but must be cut. They also could irradiate the package once sealed killing off all bacteria that might be inside further reducing the ability for it to go off.

This week actually inspired me to go and buy Smart Price stuff on my previous grocery shop in Asda. Can confirm just how good it is: for the insanely low amount of money the stuff costs, you can't go wrong. The chips (fries for you Americans.) are especially good when considering the fact that a bag from McCain would cost £2-3, when - if you ask me - the McCain are no where near as good as the cheapo alternative. My mother swears by Asda's own brand stuff and thinks the Tesco equivalents are horrible. Sainsburys is worse AND more expensive whilst giving less quantity for your coin.

Not sure if this is as true for British frozen meals as it is for American, but I didn’t see it. A lot of the time manufacturers here mix soy in with the meat to bulk it up along with the usual high fat, high salt, high sugar. It’s disgusting and usually rubbery. I avoid it mightily.

It's not evil preservatives that make the meals last 3 weeks in the refrigerator (not freezer) as they would have to list them and as you demonstrated, alot of them didn't have preservatives. High fat content foods last a long while (hence you can have butter in your fridge for months). Also, they suck the oxygen out the containers and replace it with nitrogen so that it's a much more difficult environment for bacteria to grow - this is probably why the cellophane wrapper is such an arse to remove, if it was easier like the meals which only last a few days then you'd have more meals going off quicker. More expensive ready meals have a higher turn over rate, more are sold to be eaten at convenience, where as smart price is aimed at people who perhaps may only shop once a fortnight or so.
@surpriseitscaz6 жыл бұрын
They put such a lot of salt in those ready meals in place of more expensive herbs and spices, I think that's why they have such a long shelf life.
