As someone who worked at a family restaurant that NO LONGER USES doordash, it was awful. We ended up closing door dash orders super early because they kept showing up after we closed our kitchen despite that. I, as the person who managed the 35-item order and stacked it perfectly into four large bags and directly handed it to the driver, got 0 tips from all of my effort and they charged the restaurant a huge commission. And don’t even start me on the drivers who’d take the wrong person’s order if I didn’t directly hand it to them or take only one of the bags and then I’d be the one with the angry phone call. The doordash bell sound still haunts me to this day and I will never work for a restaurant that uses doordash again. It sucked.

I'm in no real position to give business advice, but unless you're getting someone to go over each of your doordash orders full time, at that point it might be a better investment to hire 2 fulltime drivers. These companies will get away with as much as they can, as they know fighting them is time consuming and expensive, it's part of their business model once you reach a level of power like that. Additionally as you making that transition from delivery apps to drivers, to try to compensate for the loss in customers you can up your social media presence and have a flyer come with every food app delivery advertising to order from the store directly. Good luck!

Hi, Drew! I actually work for DoorDash as my primary income! Another annoying thing about DoorDash is you are HEAVILY incentivized to accept what you’re given. Every order you decline hurts your “acceptance score” and therefore hurts your chances of getting an order in the first place. That makes it very hard to say no to a $3 order with no tip that’ll take 40 minutes to complete.

hey jb! I'm a dasher also and just wanna let you know that your acceptance rate DOES NOT MATTER, no matter how much DD tries to make you believe that it does (unless you are a top dasher, which is only offered in a few cities, then you need 70%). So decline away my friend!

I used to use Door Dash but Grubhub pays me way more money (anything below $9 on Grubhub I won't take while on Doordash in my area $9 is a rare and amazing order they're usually aroud $7). @@TheRabidDeer When DoorDash offers you an order, the total amount they offer is base pay + tip. They don't tell you which is which until after the order, but you can usually get a rough estimate of which is which by learning how the system works. Occasionally they don't tell you what the full amount is, and will incentivize you to take it with the promise of more money. Sometimes it's really good ($15 extra), sometimes not so much ($.50 extra). If the tip goes over a certain amount (I wanna say $5.50 or something similar, but I don't remember), that's when they'll do the tease thing.

As a business owner Postmates is the worst. Postmates has added our business to their app and will not delete it since their whole thing is delivery for anything and everything. Well that's cool and all but our business information and menu is incorrect and if we want to have control over the information we have to partner with them and that includes us paying money we don't want to pay. We would rather just not be on their app and avoid all the problems since we have started getting calls complaining to us about orders that they placed on postmates that we don't even have on our system. I work at a bagel shop that does delivery with DoorDash. There are many reasons why I hate having to make food for DD. First: people seem to order the most ridiculous things which makes them time-consuming to make, which is infuriating most of the time because now that’s one less person making food for the people in line. Second: DD doesn’t know when we’re out of certain items, making it frustrating when someone orders something that we’re out of. Third: the drivers get really impatient when the food isn’t done by the time they arrive to pick it up. Like sorry man, there’s a big ass line of people wanting to order, we simply just didn’t have the time/personnel to put your order together. It also doesn’t help that the drivers usually arrive mere minutes after we receive the info for the order.

@motunuiwoods8615

as someone who's now been on both sides, I can now see why the driver is upset when it's not done on time. Most of us are paid per order, so if we're expecting a $5 dollar order to take 10-15 mins total, but then arrive and its not even started, that might be stretched out to 20-30 mins, and now instead of $20, you're making about $5 in an hour. Obviously that's no excuse to use any slurs(definitely crossing the line), but if a driver seems annoyed, that's why. there definitely should be some understanding on both sides, but you could be really screwing someone over if you're prioritizing orders made after the one the driver is coming to pick up. I've started to just leave and assign it to someone else though now if the order is 5+ mins late.;

@Linus haha I live in Washington DC. Corporate taxation is synonymous with consumer taxation is a basic economic concept. In 1930’a the tax rate on the rich and corporation was 70%, the next couple of years they brought it down to 25% and captured more revenue. When you increase taxes on corporations they increase the prices of the product; thus they never pay taxes, you do. When you increase taxes on the rich they invest it in securities, that’s why no wealthy individual pays high taxes... read a book. Free to Choose by Milton Friedman is a good start but might be too complicated for you.

Ugh, the last restaurant I worked at had an ongoing war with Postmates. We were not connected with any delivery service (on purpose, because it was a ramen place and that stuff doesn't deliver well), but Postmates would have their drivers call in for take-out, pretending to be regular customers, and then not inform us they were with Postmates until they arrived and tried to pay with a Postmates card. The kicker was that Postmates didn't even have our actual menu...they let customers "suggest" and order items they thought we might have, forcing us servers to get into actual arguments with stressed-out, pissed-off drivers who would show up looking for items we never, ever had on our menu. We called Postmates more than once demanding they remove us from their restaurant list, and they always claimed they couldn't (wtf??). I'm out of the restaurant business for now, but I will absolutely never order through Postmates because, wow, fuck that company.

@@Sunshineattacks3 the thing that sucks is that it really does screw restaurants over; their system is highly ineffective and allows for absolutely ZERO communication between anyone, but the blame always gets put on us. Despite needing to put in an estimated time of when the food will be done, dashers will show up whenever, usually within 10 minutes, and then get mad at us that the food isn't done. Sometimes the app won't let us mark something out of stock nor call the customer, so if the dasher happens to take a bit we have to wait until they arrive to inform them. And honestly, I hate saying this because I believe in tipping delivery people, but except for about 2 people, every single dasher we've got has been incredibly rude and it sucks slaving over food and drinks only for someone who yelled at us to get the tip and doordash's shitty system takes a high commission. It absolutely sucks :/ My experience mostly comes from Doordash so that's what I can speak on, but I will say that when we occasionally get Grubhub orders, you can actually at least mark things out of stock and the delivery people are usually polite, so I wish that was more frequently used. The losses definitely exist. You might question what these companies (and the government) define as a loss, but the companies aren't profiting. They are spending more than their revenue, but that spending is on things that helps them grow (hire more employees, acquire other companies, build infrastructure). This law comes from before the age of BIG business, where businesses stopped growing at a certain point and then started profiting (at which point you can tax them). Good CEO's have realized that they can just grow their company forever and never get burdened by taxes. They aren't doing anything illegal, the losses do exist, and it's got nothing to do with "being hard to prove." It's just a question of what counts as a loss.

Oh, 21% yeah, they say for you to sigh up. Then they tell you that it was just a base fee to literally just sign up. If you want to be seen (as in if someone search a general food category, your restaurant will be listed) it goes up to 30 to 40%. Also, as mentioned in the video, people do not call the delivery service for anything! Our food is usually ready in 10 minutes, packed securely in a bag. But we get blamed for late food, cold food, messy food, wrong food and so on. They always demand refund which we can't give cuz we don't even have their info! But at the same time, we understand their frustration cuz you can't never ever get to the customer service. After working in the food service industry, the sound of our machine printing off online orders would trigger anxiety for all of us, to the point where we would prank each other by pushing the print button after closing to scare our coworkers 💀. Hi, Uber eats driver here! Definitely tip in cash if you can, it makes our day since it’s tax free and we know that Uber won’t get to secretly keep any of that money! Also, if your food arrives to your door later than you expected, it’s likely because the restaurant was very busy and took a long time to prepare it. We don’t get paid for the extra time waiting at the restaurant, so please be patient and don’t take out your anger on your courier 😊

Last year I ordered a papa john’s pizza on postmates while on my college campus. The person who picked up my order was on a bicycle, and when I checked the app to see how close she was I noticed to icon was stuck at an intersection. Some time later I got a text from her saying she got into an accident and broke her arm and that her brother was going to finish the order. I tried telling her to not worry about the pizza because HOLY SHIT get to the hospital!!!! Regardless she gave the pizza to her brother who would finish the trip by car. I walked around campus trying to figure out where he was, and the app wasn’t updating a location, it was still on that intersection. I’m pretty sure she didn’t hand over her phone to him, just the pizza. I saw a lot of cars driving around and I had no idea which one was him. I got a message saying the order was cancelled so I gave up. When I requested a refund the reason I gave was “driver broke her arm” and it got back to me pretty quickly. I really wish I had a way to reach out to her and give her a really big tip or something because god damn. She did not have to try and finish that order. It was just a fucking pizza. @@Awesomeasumpta13 Yea that's the purpose of it. It's better, I think, to tell the customer "you know what? Either you make an order worthy of our time or we don't provide delivery because our delivery drivers are busy getting profitable purchases delivered" rather than put a ridiculous fee on a single sandwich order. At least that way you make the customer more conscious of what the policy of the company is. Honestly I don't know. In my country (Greece) you just don't pay for delivery costs, just the food you order. However, since the restaurant is employing the drivers, they get a monthly salary which can be less profitable for both the drivers and the establishment itself.

i used to be a hostess at this fairly popular restaurant and the number of calls i would have to deal with pertaining to issues with orders from doordash/uber customers. at first- i'd spend time explaining what was wrong but then my manager told me it's literally not our job to do that. drivers would call sometimes asking if it was ready, super frustrating. but the WORST is that despite having a sign that Literally reads "please see hostess for seating AND UBER/DOORDASH ORDERS- drivers would come in, grab a bag- we had them labeled a certain way so they typically couldn't tell unless they were experienced and came often (but the regulars always talked to us and were super friendly- they know better)- and leave. then we would get an angry call about how their order was wrong without us even knowing it was taken. also- the food industry already underpays its staff...and relies on tips which in the wintertime is shite! so disgusting how these apps r literally taking advantage of restaurants. i understand not all customers are physically/mentally able to get their food themselves, but seriously- if you can, get your own damn food, please, and tip your servers well, even if you caught them on a bad day

That's what I was thinking when Drew mentioned that. Fun tax law fact! If you own a business and you lose money one year, not only do you not have to pay income taxes for that year, but the amount you lost is also subtracted from next year's taxes. So if you "lose" a million dollars one year, a million dollars is subtracted from next year's income tax report. It's literally how Donald Trump (and other major companies) don't pay taxes. They just use a bunch of tax loopholes that are only lucrative to the top 1% and would otherwise doom normal people to a life of poverty and debt. And it's the reason the middle class pays the most taxes out of any other income group.

I work at chipotle which for some reason is doordash's poster child so we get a ton of door dash orders. our online system has no cap for the number of online orders and ive seen us get as many as 115 items to make in 15 minutes. and then the delivery drivers come 10 minutes before their order is due and waste our time making us estimate how long it'll be until its done when we could've been using that time making orders. its insane how entitled they can be. and then customers calling us to say their order wasn't delivered and we have to spend another 5 minutes explaining to them how door dash is a third party company and we have no control over it and they cannot grasp the concept of us being separate companies. one time when I was only 17 a lady screamed at me over the phone saying how I need to control "my" delivery drivers and that we're the ones that are paying their bills so we need to keep a closer eye on them. its really a nightmare

So they can't confirm the items. I then tried to get a refund through Wendy's and....well they just ignored me on all customer service platforms and it was impossible to get a response. So maybe I should have just went to doordash. Except doordash didn't have the $5 biggy bag listed or the customization that the Wendy's app had. As a Doordash driver, I can confirm that the service fees barely go to us. I don’t think I’ve ever been paid directly by Doordash more than $5, it’s usually around 2-3, so what makes it break an order is tips.. So if you don’t tip, good luck getting someone to go pick up your food.

How much do you think people should tip on average for doordash drivers? Usually a proper tip is 15%-20% of the total cost, but I'm assuming the numbers might be different since I'm not tipping wait staff, I'm tipping a driver. My default tip is around $3.00 (more if the restaurant is farther away or if it's rush hour) but from reading these comments I'm wondering if my default tip is too low. What amount do you wish people would tip at the very least?

@@6235riverim a doordasher. i wish people did 20%, or 5 bucks minimum since thats going the be the majority of what we recieve as payment. I know that's a lot to ask after all the stupid fees. but because the majority of our offers are 2-4 bucks, that means we'll at least be recieving a minimum of 7-9 bucks which is a reasonable amount and often the lowest most of us will take. thanks for asking

Gotta say, I forget how intelligent Drew Gooden is and then he makes a video like this. You can tell he's done his research and did an excellent job at explaining Delivery Apps, how they work, and how they end up hurting drivers, restaurants, and themselves.

I was a doordash driver, a “dasher”. I worked in Wisconsin during covid and beforehand. It was awful, the worst thing is that doordash doesn’t pay dashers for their time spent waiting for orders. Sometimes I’d be sitting in a restaurant parking lot in winter for an hour waiting for my second order. I feel Dashers should be paid for that because they have to be ready to drive at any moment, and the app displays that they’re on the clock. you also get penalized for declining orders, even if it’s only $4 for an hour delivery. You get penalized for being late, even if it’s the business who was late or really busy. And There are usually too many dashers per diameter and that’s why the available times are so minuscule.

I know not everyone's in a position to do this, but I've taken the option of refusing to use any of these apps. In Australia the issue we've also had is a lot of delivery people are on bicycles, many of them are immigrants/on temporary working visas, and several of them have been killed. And then the company refuses to pay any compensation because they're technically "independent contractors" and not direct employees. I'd rather not feel like somebody literally risked their life to deliver me food.
@StreakyBaconMan
@StreakyBaconMan 2 жыл бұрын
I was all with you up until the last sentence. There is literally no way to get food delivered where the delivery person isn't putting their life at risk - all forms of travel are somewhat risky. Car accidents do happen, and even people on foot aren't immune from a traffic accident. One of my old jobs was to ride a bicycle around the CBD with a huge billboard towed behind it, and I had to ride on the roads because there are no bike paths in the CBD - I would have been pretty pissed off if advertisers started telling my boss "well we don't want to use you anymore because what if one of your riders is in an accident and dies?" costing me that job despite the fact my boss was more than reasonable - I was an employee not a contractor, I earned slightly above minimum wage at 18yrs old so I was happy with that, and all the equipment I used was paid for and maintained by my employer rather than myself. That was a pretty good deal for me back then and I am glad I had that job. The main problem I see with food delivery apps and rideshare apps is they do not offer their "contractors" that seem an awful lot like employees adequate compensation for the risks they are expected to take when performing their job. If Uber were to classify their drivers as employees, pay for the cars and maintenance and pay the employees more than minimum wage then I'd be fine with it.

Funny in CA these companies all tried to say that if we started passing laws that required these people be paid fairly and get offered benefits, they'd have to charge us more and add on an extra fee. Then the law didn't pass.... and they added on extra fees anyway. Also I did have to start reassessing this in general. When you talk about treating yourself, yeah, that's good. But only if it's actually a treat. When I saw that getting a "value" mean delivered to me from McDonalds was $30, that wasn't a treat. It was punishment for making a bad food decision, and it discouraged me from getting it.
