They also do a discount range called J James on fresh foods and that is apparently very good too. Basics mix veg frozen is good too as there’s no sweet corn in there lol. Thank you for doing it and show that there’s nothing to be afraid of buying basic/ value ranges from supermarkets and there is money to be saved by buying them instead of the big brands.

@Brit Shanks the prick spent £10.50 on a bottle of vodka and £4 on a bag of sweets. So if you take that £15 away yes it is still too much. However aldi is not cheap. I could feed myself for near enough a month on the £15 that this prick has wasted on booze and chocolate. Try a slow cooker.
@MarkNorville5 жыл бұрын
@Amrin Ibaa A slow cooker 3.5 ltr will do around 7 bowls of what ever you cook. It would depend upon your bowl size though. A bag of mince costs £3.50 from iceland and a total of £5 for the rest of the ingredients. It works out to 71p a serving. 10 sausages £1 total with other ingredients let's say £4 57p a portion for sausage casserole. So that is two weeks worth of meals for £9. When you slow cook meat you can buy the cheap stuff as it tastes a lot better slow cooking than it does frying.

13:25 - Tesco does an ordinary garlic baguette for 35p. Two of them with a cream of tomato & basil soup tub is a tasty and cheap meal for two. Mike, you mentioned your own cooking. There's a heck of a lot you can do to make meals which taste really good, don't cost that much and are not difficult to prepare. Two examples... If you use Tesco then check out their bags of frozen mixed rice, called, "4 steam bags of white & wild rice with steam vegetables", 1.75 a bag (so about 44p/portion), they go very well with various things, eg. lightly dusted haddock fillet (tad pricey but worth it for some healthy fish), or - one of my favourite combos - grilled thin pork loin steak and either mixed baby leaf lettuce (or crispy, your preference) or a fast-stir-fried mix of chunky mushroom, red pepper, garlic, chilli and ginger with a few spices. Serve with garlic bread covered with some mozarella, oven cooked for 8 mins on high (this is better than premade garlic bread & cheese), bit of garlic butter on the pork. I call this porky rice. Total cost about 2.50 to 3.50 per person depending on rice vs. stir-fry-mix, quantity of garlic bread munched, whether one loin steak each or 1.5 each if we're hungry. If having the lettuce version, spice it up with some sweet chilli sauce on the grilled pork, and sprinkle fresh lemon juice over the lettuce. Here's a recipe my gf makes which is awesome: place two chicken breasts with garlic butter and white wine inside a tin foil pouch (normal aluminium foil folded up, small hole in the top for steam vent), in a pyrex dish, in a highish oven (middle shelf) for 25 mins. 5 mins after the chicken goes in, microwave a decent size potato for 4 or 5 mins (5 mins for a larger tater, start earlier if doing two potatoes for two people), turn over & repeat, then cut in half and add to the oven top shelf on a baking tray for the final 10 mins to crisp up. Now put some thin green beans on the hob (so this is about 10 mins in; if you like crispier beans, leave starting this for a few mins more). With 10 mins to go, make up a simmered sauce in a small pan using the juice of two lemons, garlic butter, water and corn flour (the latter mixed initially with cold water of course, don't add it straight to hot water). When the chicken is done, pour all the juices from the tin foil pouch into the sauce pan, simmer until the sauce is quite thick (don't go overboard with the corn flour). Serve up the baked tatty, green beans and chicken, pour the lemon sauce over the chicken & beans, plonk some normal butter on the tatty, commence face stuffing. You will be in flavour and texture heaven. The lemon flavour with the chicken & garlic is fantastic, the whole combination just works; sauce with the beans, tatty to mop things up, etc. This is a butter heavy dish but I'm British and I don't care. :D If you're ever up in Edinburgh, stop by and we'll make it for you. :) Re the garlic butter, sadly Tesco does not sell this (anymore). Get it from Asda or larger Coops, it's called, "Kerrymaid Garlic Spreadable", typically 95p for 4x 20g pouches. If I see it on a shelf, I buy every pack on the shelf. :D My own recipes during the week tend to be thai-style stir fry variations using Singapore or medium egg noodles, from the very simple to the rather complex that needs more preparation time. An easy one though is thick sliced bacon, fresh garlic, fresh ginger, fresh red chill, spring onion and sweet red pepper (add mushroom for a bulkier meal, use normal onion if preferred). Chop up the veg so the pieces are long and thin. Prepare the garlic/ginger/chill (chunkier pieces will make for a more punchy flavour). Chop up the bacon into pieces half an inch or less (once slice of bacon if it's a midday munch, two for an evening meal). Note I use smoked bacon which comes as 6 slices/pack. Get some medium egg noodles on the go in a pan of boiling water (I use Sharwoods which come in packs of 5 portions; use a whole portion for an evening meal, more like half or 2/3rds of a portion for a midday munch). Add some oil to a wok and get it hot & smoking (I use extra virgin olive oil, keep buying the big bottles when they're on offer), fry off the bacon until not quite starting to brown. Melt in some garlic butter and add the veg and garlic/ginger/chilli, some hot paprika, dried basil, light soy and - if you want some extra heat - a sprinkle of thai style spice mix (or just use two fresh chillis). Fry a little and then add a little white wine and the juice of half a lime (or a whole lime if preparing for two). Get it all fried off somewhat; If the wok looks like it's getting a bit dry, ladle some water over from the noodle pan. How saucy you want the main mix is up to you, I prefer it kinda dry whereas my gf prefers it with some sauce to spare (soak up the sauce with some bread or prawn crackers); for the latter, just add extra water from the noodle pan and stir it in. With only a minute or two to go, add some fresh chopped basil and, if you like them, a sprinkle of pine nut kernels. Drain the noodles; use some of the water from the pan to bolster the main mix if desired. For serving, either put the noodles on a plate and put the mix on top, or add the noodles to the wok and mix it all through (preferences vary). With a slightly longer cooking time, one can do the same recipe using thin sliced chicken or pork. For beef, buy the thin frying steaks and fry it thinly sliced on its own first with a little of the garlic/ginger/chill & wine, put it to one side in a warmed dish, then do everything else as above and just add the beef back in when the fresh basil goes in - this prevents the beef from being overcooked. I've done numerous variations of these, different noodles, sometimes with added lemon grass paste and galangal, etc. Here's an older version with chunkier beef, flat noodles and seaweed flakes: www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/thaibeefchillinoodle.jpg Later version with thin beef and medium egg noodles: www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/thaibeefchillinoodle2.jpg A version with chunkier chicken and dark soy (quite strong): www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/chicken_chilli_basil.jpg Another with beef (back when this was taken I hadn't yet started adding pine kernels): www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/P1020755s.jpg I try different things frequently, most recently with Tesco's thin Singapore noodles, which of course are ready to add straight to the wok. These recipes require a bit of time to prepare the ingredients but they cook very fast. Note they will not work so well for two if your cooker can't keep a wok hot (honestly, I'd prefer gas cooking for this). NB1: pine nut kernels are expensive. Shop around to find a better price. Not essential but a good addition for a healthier diet. NB2: I use sweet red peppers (Tesco's finest) because they last a very long time in the fridge, and check the packs in the shelf basket, look for the ones which have three inside instead of two by mistake, extra 100g for free. :) NB3: I prefer red chillis, but you could use green instead of course. Note that chillis from a proper chilli plant do taste nicer, but the plants have a habit of making way too many chillis ready for use all at once. One time I did have a plant though that made its chillis become ripe at a sensible place, they were excellent, definitely nicer than the packs one can buy. I think my gf bought the chilli plant from Sainsburys. NB4: buy proper basil plants, not packets of cut basil leaves. The plants last *ages*; just cut off the largest leaves each time, keep the pot in a bowl with plenty of water, good light each day. I had one plant last three months this way (smaller leaves just keep growing), whereas packets of cut "fresh" basil leaves often won't last more than a few days. NB5: don't buy the cheapo garlic bulbs, they're smaller and don't taste as nice. NB6: leave in the seeds & pulp from the chillis if you want it extra hot, but personally I remove them, though the thai spice mix if I add some does have some seeds (careful with that stuff, easy to make the meal too hot). NB7: I find if I use fresh ginger that's been kept for a few days it's juicier, I prefer it this way. NB8: Remember to break up dried noodles in the pan with a wooden spoon as they're cooking. For reduced eating messyness, snap the dried slice from the packet into 6 or 8 pieces at the start, this prevents having mega long noodle strands that spray sauce everywhere. You can vary these in numerous ways to taste, add pineapple or other types of veg. Infact, they're still pretty good even without any meat, ideal for vegetarians. Oh, a can of fizzy mango juice goes well with any of them. :) Ian. PS. Sometimes I go through a pseudo-Med/Italian phase. Here's chicken/tomato/garlic penne pasta, oven roasted mixed Med veg/peppers & herbs, lettuce with red onion mixed through, sprinkles of Grana Pedano cheese, half a lemon for the lettuce (and yes I overcooked the cheesy garlic bread, a rare screwup): www.sgidepot.co.uk/misc/P1030311s.jpg Was bloody good though. :)
