There is one thing legendary about Shashi Tharoor is that no matter what disagreements he had with the ruling party in India, when it comes to arguing with foreigners, he always represents and defends the whole India and Modi or whoever is related with India, he doesn't let the local arguments come in between the foreign debates. I agree with him completely. I used to go to an Indian international school in Singapore after studying for the first 6 years of my life in a IGCSE system in Indonesia. What I discovered was the major difference was that in the Indian school, all I was doing was memorising facts and figures that I didn't really understand or know how to apply to real life situations. I didn't knw why they were relevant and why u should learn them. I wasn't really doing well in school because I always tend to loose marks because my answer wasnt exactly The same as the answer in the textbook. Then I decided to study in the Singaporean educational system and what I discovered was staggering. My grades shot up and I was soon the first in class for consecutive two years (idk the results for this year cuz it isn't over yet) I was second in the cohort and I was suddenly considered smart. This wasn't because the Singaporean system was not as difficult as the Indian system, in fact the Singaporean educational system is one of the most recognise edu systems in the world. I did better here because they didn't just teach u facts, they tested u on how u can use those facts to apply to real situations and how to be innovative with what u already know. I feel that this is what true education should be about, not just memorising facts and figures.

Thanks for pointing this out. Well said. I hope policy makers at the top of ministry also adhere with this sooner and instead of setting up more IITs and IIMs, they start structuring the Indian education system from the ground level, at schools itself.

( Must be your assumption that if anyday P.M wants to get selected in an intel. call center, Right!!. You can't be that big a fool. Certainly majority of India does not speak that language or if they do, certainly not as frequent as some other western countries do.) 2. Personality. ( yeah agreed. But majority of P.M already fill that criteria) 3. Knowledge. ( Of what exactly?? About graphs and percentage read from a research work of some other guy or astute information about all things which makes us Indian, our own history and teachings. I am guessing the second one.)

Inspiring stuff...but the problem is, we watch then we forget, almost immediately. The whole time we are watching the video, we are feeling inspired and motivated to contribute and all sorts of good vibes. BUT, the video ends, we switch to facebook or whatever and instantaneously forget everything we just felt. We need to feel personally involved and affected to stay inspired to make change. What he talked about 10:15 onwards, I'm sure every student was agreeing, but no one will care enough to remember. I hope we can all have the determination to stay inspired, myself included, because it takes effort.

Manasvi Singh Actually, it's a shortcoming of our education system, rather, examination system.
@minusv.singhs8 жыл бұрын
Debangsu Sarkar no of course , I agree that our education is faaaaar from conducive to nurturing innovative minds. But! What I was trying to say is, we "could" simply blame the education system, sit back, grit our teeth and wait for it get better. In fact I'm not even saying you have to do something to change the "education system". I'm saying that...people like you and me, as we grow older, we graduate from school and watch videos like this, read articles about the education system being terrible, we know what real education should be, what better systems are like in other countries ...as we expose ourselves to this knowledge..it is no longer justified to say " oh we were brought up this way, school messed us up, sorry theres nothing we can do further from this point on" . I hope you are understanding what I'm saying. I'm saying we need to put in that EXTRA effort, go that extra mile , to make up for what school couldn't do for us. cultivate in ourselves the will to learn and apply knowledge. Its not impossible just because school didnt do it for us, we have the exposure and we have the conviction. Through videos like this, and I was simply saying that we musnt forget after the video is done.
@minusv.singhs8 жыл бұрын
Of course there is a large part of our population that isn't lucky enough to be exposed to what real education should be like......that is where the real problem lies. Because they cannot help themselves because of it.
@DS-Pakaemon8 жыл бұрын
Manasvi Singh Yah, I fully agree! We need to put the extra oil into our engines. Am in 11th , and going through this horrible experience of "INDIAN EXAMINATION SYSTEM". THE EDUCATION system is just so wrong in so many levels. It's just retarded. The problem is that, not everyone is equally motivated to do stuff, you know. The poor , the depressed. I understand, how simple it is to blame others, than doing stuff yourself. But Present day education system is a horrendous disaster. It's a disease. Everyday I sit in school, and introspect, how futile and useless the board rules and regulations, the system as a whole is. This continues into the college, and you get frustrated youth, not knowing what is to be done. Quality of education, let's not start about it in such a populous country like India.

I admire you for so many reason and I agree with you. Not just reading and writing, but actual education for older adults should be encouraged. I was a high school graduate and stopped after that. In United States I decided to try college. Indian thinking was still with me that I was 27 years old, and it's too late. I met a 70 year old white woman in my class and asked her what does she hope to get out of college. She changed my life and thinking with her answer. She said that she always wanted to get higher education, but raising children and grandchildren, she never got a chance. Now she has time, so she is fulfilling her dream. For the first time I realized that education is not for career, but to grow. I was 43 when I got my masters. It's never too late to learn.

Its sad that people like him, Dr. Raghuram Rajan, Dr. Manmohan Singh, Mr. Nandan Nilekani & many more are no more associated with active policy planning of India.
