UPDATE: Received my purple belt in the first week of November...it has only just really hit me! Thank you all for the continued support. When I first started Jiu Jitsu I never thought I would make it this far...but now that I am here I wouldn't live my life any other way. Proud to represent the belt and the martial art as a whole. To everyone who is in the early days of starting Jiu Jitsu, just stay persistent and that 1% improvement everyday will eventually add up to changing your life for the better - on and off the mats. OSS!

I hope to relate with this comeback story in the sense that I've not been able to walk since last November due to rare medical conditions. I am pushing to be back to using a cane by this summer since I've been using a wheelchair ,but I've vowed that as soon as my body is well, I'm going back to the mat. The weird thing to internalize isn't so much the epic story of comeback as much as the amount of self realization that takes place when our bodies are "out of control". It's crazy how much people take for granted when we're healthy, but once we see our limitations and we don't have ANY other choice than fighting a faceless enemy with clear purpose and full intent, it is empowering. Thanks for sharing

This was incredibly inspiring. I began studying jiu jitsu a month ago after over a decade of wanting to train but choosing a life of drugs and degradation over my dreams. You've given me hope that I too can learn this art. As a 6' 1", 195 lb guy, it is humbling when my size and strength are easily triumphed over by technique, and experience. I nearly geared up when you received your blue belt. Congratulations and thank you for sharing part of your story.

This was a very well made video, and a great transformation of your self. Congrats most of all on your battle with cancer. It’s funny that you mention surfing in the video, as I had surfed my entire life and at age 39 had a paralyzing spinal cord injury. Due to my journey in martial arts (TKD) my life was saved because I was in shape and had mental focus and clarity when I needed it the most. I’m talking underwater, paralyzed from the neck down, out of body experience, flown out by helicopter, type of shit. Anyway, luckily I was able to recover and after taking time out (20 years) to raise my children and regain my mojo I started TKD again with my former instructor Master Eric San Jose.six years ago at age 58. I began at my former rank of Brown Belt and this past Monday June 10th was promoted to 2nd Dan. This Monday, BJJ fundamentals class begins for me and my journey begins anew. I’m living and breathing proof that martial arts can save your life whether your opponent is another human being or you’re locked in a battle with Mother Nature. I’m lucky to attend a great academy at LAW MMA on Long Island NY and have great instructors and fellow students. Thank again for inspiring myself and so many others with your work.

So freaking down to earth, love that attitude sensei, just because you know more techniques does not make you a better person, you are so right, me being a blue belt, im still really humble and very good to people, people try and test me all the time and always try and fight me and I always turn away, I always keep that stuff on the mat, I do not believe in fighting, I believe in keeping yourself healthy and focusing on your mental health.

Chirag, That is a great video! My blue belt did not come in such a victorious way, but there really is nothing like the comradery of a good BJJ team. Team Quest / Checkmat BJJ Temecula California here but so many great small gyms over the country. Your blue belt journey should be even better. Since I travel for work I try to hit up other gyms around the country and usually they just make me sign a wavier but I typically pay a $20 mat fee in small gyms.
