This actually happened to me once - my “uncle” aka my dads best friend was watching me and he was black, I’m not. Some woman asked me if I was okay & if I knew him. I remember being so confused. He handled it with such grace but stood up for himself as did a guy sitting by us. I miss him everyday, he was truly like family and the coolest guy.
@TexasIronLegend2 жыл бұрын
Note: My reply is not intended to sound hostile. It was probably because y'all are two different races, so it was obvious that he wasn't your dad. I doubt that she asked you that because of racism, she probably would've asked the same thing if you were black and he was white. But if she wouldn't have asked the same thing in that case, then she's racist. I think that even if it is obvious that an adult and child aren't related, it is still a really dumb question to ask because if the adult is a predator they wouldn't be out in public with the child. However, one of the only times it would make any sense is if the public place is a park and you see an adult suspiciously walking to their car while holding a child's arm. Regardless, he's a true champion for handling it so well as you said. He sure does sound like a cool guy.
@Jillyyy17 Жыл бұрын
@@TexasIronLegend children get watched and babysat by people who aren’t there parents all the time. That was the point of this episode. To assume someone of a different race doesn’t even know the child they are watching is incredibly small minded. He could’ve been white and I black, he could’ve been Asian and I white - the point remains that someone of a different race watching a child shouldn’t be questioned simply because they are a different race. I’ve been out w my biological aunt who looks NOTHING like me and haven’t been asked this. Think about it. I’ve been out w babysitters who look nothing like me and haven’t been asked this. Even if the intention is to be caring for the child’s safety, the fact that a babysitter who isn’t the same race as the child is questioned is inherently small minded and racist. Really think about what your comment just reinforced. I know you don’t mean to be hostile and I’m not looking to argue, but the point you made wasn’t a very good one
@TexasIronLegend Жыл бұрын
@@Jillyyy17 there are definitely biological relatives that look completely different, like you said, so many people can just assume that the babysitter is a relative even if they look different (as in face, hair color, etc. but NOT race). The reason why race is the factor that causes questioning of relationships is because that is a 100% distinction in ancestry. If people are two different races it is very obvious that they aren't related. Way more obvious than simple differences such as facial structure and eye color. It is not because the person hates the specific race, it is just that they are obviously not related. Every single reasonable person would come to the conclusion that a black person and a white person are not closely genetically related. Whereas two people with the same skin but completely different faces are more likely to be related (this was the case with your aunt, even though she looked different, it was still fairly likely that she was related to you, AND according to you she was your aunt). She probably wasn't thinking, "oh, this black guy is definitely a predator because that's how all blacks are". She was probably thinking, "oh, these two individuals are obviously not related, let me check up on this". I'm not saying I agree with the lady, I definitely wouldn't have asked that same question. However, I don't believe the motivation was racism, but rather the fact y'all were obviously not related.
@Jillyyy17 Жыл бұрын
@@TexasIronLegend obviously the fact that we were two different races was incredibly obvious, I understand this. What I’m saying is to automatically assume someone you don’t look like may be predatory/ shouldn’t have you in their possession, is incredibly small minded. Perhaps not even “racist” but I want you to understand that you are suggesting races can not/ do not commonly interact, mingle, or become close w one another. If she thought he wasn’t family and was worried because maybe he was being creepy towards me I’d get it. If she thought he wasn’t family because I looked uncomfortable I’d get it. But to suggest people have a reason to question a relationship between an adult and child simply because of how obvious the difference in race to me is still wild. I’m not tryna be rude but I don’t think you even understand what you’re reinforcing
@Jillyyy17 Жыл бұрын
@@TexasIronLegend I don’t understand the point of writing an entire paragraph about how we don’t look similar so her frame of mind went to “hm wonder if that kid knows him” when plenty of white hispanic black asian Pacific Islanders etc interconnect every day. James A Lafayette True. Though such a scenario would involve racial prejudice on the part of a white woman towards a black man, most Americans don't accept male babysitters as a whole. They have a blinding fear and ignorance towards male babysitting regardless of race or color. Male babysitting itself is unheard of and there is this ingrained mentality that most teen boys and men are "perverts," and/or creeps who have sexual things on their minds. That's just in general. Like some women would think a man could violate them or hide a camera in a bathroom or something. Worse yet, some American men and women would consider some "pervert" men as potential victmizers of children.

I know it’s so unfair Just because you think blacks are bad doesn’t mean they are. “Why do we judge people by skin and not my hair or eyes? We have brown eyes and brown hair but everybody thinks you’re bad if you have just brown skin?”
@joelschittenhelm55715 жыл бұрын
Honestly, i think she accted correctly. I mean the babysitter is obviously not there biological father and talking to him wouldnt help because he just has to be good at lying and nice to the kids (if he was doing something wrong). You can never be careful enough when its about kids. I would do the same when I see a white man with black kids or something like that. Of course 911 is not the first thing you should do (check if the parents are around etc.). I dont know the whole situation so i dont know if there was something about it that made it super racism but hey, I would do this 1000000 times if I would save one kid because of that even if the whole world would call me racist.

Mharke Such a scenario would involve racial prejudice on the part of a white woman, but most Americans don't accept male babysitters as a whole.
