A look at the a week many mid-Michigan residents will not soon forget after heavy rain and dam failures resulted in massive flooding across the region. More photos and stories about the flood here: topics.mlive.com/tag/midland-...
How did the dam fail? What happens next? When the Edenville Dam failed on May 19th, 2020, it started a chain of events that would devastate thousands of lives, homes, and property. So much so that President Donald Trump has approved an emergency declaration throughout mid-Michigan hit with catastrophic flooding.

You're very right....Nature is not to blame for this...rain happens...no control as to the amount per episode, and to create the man-made lakes...Wixom and Sanford...they blockaded the natural river bed...to FLOOD the natural flood plane of the river. You roll the dice...and play the hand. Nature...(the House) won....

Yes, it was human error in not maintaining these man-made structures. I don't live near these broken dams, but if there were structural concerns, it means that IF something UNUSUAL happened- like, say, an excess of rainfall- then it should have been addressed instead of "saving money" by hoping for the best. Unfortunately, the local government will NOT be held responsible, and it will all be chalked up to "an act of God" and/or "what Mother Nature giveth she can also taketh"- nothing will be learned, and it'll be forgotten within a few weeks and those who refused to act beforehand will get away scot-free, singing, "Whew- glad it didn't happen on _my_ watch! Oh, by the way, be sure to vote for me again in November, because I saved us money and kept us safe."

When the infrastructure limitations are known, the water level could have and was trying to be lowered by the ownership, and you have politicians suing to keep the lake level high for boat owning residents and using 'mussels' as an excuse to do so, there are politicians who should be executed. "It's the government's fault!" "No, it's the business people on Wall Street's fault." Actually, it's the dam's previous owner's fault. He didn't listen to the state and local authorities' warnings. He have to give it up in 2018. The dam was in the process of transferring ownership to a company that'll be completed in a year or two. Think about it, this dam first opened almost a hundred years ago, it was destined to break. Just be glad that no one is injured or had died since every one living near the Tittabawasee River had evacuated.

Anything that, if it malfunctions, can potentially wipe out multiple towns should be regulated and monitored by the government. It’s so strange. Every time I hear of a dam failure my first question is “was it a erathen dam?” 99.9 percent the answer is yes. Then I think maybe if you are going to hold back a massive amount of water and need to protect live and property down stream you should do more then piling up a mound of dirt and expect that to do the job🤷🏽‍♂️. Yeah concrete dams are expensive but not as expensive as an entire town being destroyed and putting lives in danger.

Usually not those directly responsible: the corporations or the government employees and the lawmakers who permit this sort of disaster to exist just waiting to happen. Even when they have the structure in question to hold a maximum of water. This is beyond negligence, it was as intentional as it was inevitable.

This is flooding (defined as “rising waters” - which is separate from water damage caused by broken pipes) and home owners insurance doesn’t, and legally can’t, cover flooding (per Federal law). If they have flood insurance - which is separate from home owner’s insurance - that will cover their losses. Flood insurance is issued and underwritten by the US government, which sets the rates. You may be able to buy the policy through the same agent you get your other policies from but it is not actually issued by the agent’s company. This was put into place during the Carter administration and expanded under Clinton.

Early 70s almost lost my dad as our home was flooded from a failed Dam. There was 20 foot gap between the house and a 60 ft chicken coop, in between the house and the coop, there was a massive whirlpool that almost dragged my dad into. If you want to see what this on a huge scale looks like many many years later, look up photographs of the Grand Coulee. Much of of Eastern Washington and W Idaho were transformed suddenly when an ice dam broke up at the end of the last ice age, sending a series of floods down the Columbia River drainage and cutting a Gorge through the Cascade Mountains. This left distinctive "coullees" as well as a pattern of silt soil deposits hundreds of miles wide. If you're in the area a Pullman Washington or Colfax Washington or Moscow I suggest driving up steptor butte. From the top the Farmland in the surrounding area looks almost like rolling waves on the ocean because of the way the silt settled from the lake Missoula floods.

I don't know who exactly, probably the Governor, but the company that owned the dam drained the water one or two years prior. It was just a couple of feet, but it was due to the dams not being up to code, and the owner knew that it couldn't withhold heavy rain. The lakefront property owners complained and the state made them refill. The owner had stated that it was a one in a million chance that the dams would fail, the residents of Sanford had tried multiple times to get the Government to claim ownership of the dam and repair it, but was ultimately denied. The owners of the dams were bankrupt and couldn't pay the cost of upkeep. Sadly all the houses and businesses in the town of Sanford aren't covered by insurance because they aren't in a flood risk area. Every year after the snow melts the Sanford dam opens up and drains the lake above it, which in turn floods the nearby park in town, that's why they don't have flood insurance. So it's not that they didn't do anything about it, it's mainly that the government neglected to take action to prevent this from happening.

The govenor knew this was coming. To be fair she's not the only one that should be held accountable. She should be recalled. Her and everyone else that knew and kept silent, and did nothing should be prosecuted.

This Dam received many citations to improve the structure. It is privately owned and does not belong to the State.

You do realize her failure to act caused this, right? She was made aware of the situation and potential failure long before it happened. But She chose Not to order the gates opened to lower the level to better deal with the impending rain water. Why? Because She was more concerned doing so would threaten the muscles in the reservoir! So, while the Empress fiddled, three of her towns were flooded!
