A WICKED Roundtable: 20 Years of Elphaba
Featuring:
Jackie Burns
Jennifer DiNoia
Alyssa Fox
Mary Kate Morrisey
For information about WICKED, visit us at: www.wickedthemusical.com
So much happened before Dorothy dropped in.
WICKED, the Broadway sensation, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz…but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman born with emerald-green skin-smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships…until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.”
With a thrilling score that includes the hits “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good,” WICKED has been hailed by The New York Times as “the defining musical of the decade.” Time Magazine cheers, “if every musical had the brain, the heart, and the courage of WICKED, Broadway really would be a magical place.”
The Gershwin Theatre on 50th Street and Broadway is that magical place. From the first electrifying note to the final breathtaking moment, WICKED-the untold true story of the Witches of Oz-transfixes audiences with its wildly inventive story. It will send your spirits soaring to heights you’ll never forget.

This was quite a treat. It's not every day that you get to hear different people who play the same character sit down with each other and talk about their experiences. I love it. I do wish it was longer, though. I could literally sit here all day and listen to these ladies tell their stories.

March of 2012 while on a school choir trip, we got to have a workshop with a couple people (I think choreographers) to learn a few of the numbers. Afterwards we got to have a Q&A with Jackie. This was before we actually got to see the show later that evening, and our minds were blown by how amazing she was! We were able to catch her leaving the theater too, so I was able to get my playbill signed. She was absolutely lovely and so talented.

I saw Wicked for the first time about 6 months ago here in Australia and it was absolutely amazing, I’ve seen it another 3 times since and I’m flying from Sydney to Melbourne to see it for a 5th time. I am so incredibly grateful and lucky to have Sheridan Adams as my first Elphaba, I got to meet her at the stage door and give her a hug and it was the best moment of my life, as a 16 year old girl, she inspires me so much. When Defying Gravity ended the first time, I BAWLED my eyes out, I was in absolute shock, my mum was laughing at me. I would do anything to play Elphie one day💚

I saw Wicked for the 2nd time when the national tour came through this summer. I treated myself to really good tix. I just...it was an amazing experience. I felt so emotionally overwhelmed, but in the best way. Joy, happiness, wonder, magic, everything, turned up to 1000. I managed to hold it together until Defying Gravity, which destroyed my mascara lol.

mk was my elphaba! i watched it while on a ny tour for orchestra and band that combined my school with another. we just finished our production of the laramie project not long before, and being the orchestra and theatre geek I was, I could not stop crying whenever the ensemble sang together, it reached a high point in the song, the acting got too good, wtv. it was loud enough inside gerswhin that I could cry comfortably. i have a few weeks left of high school, and then the uni days, but now my maybenotsopipe pipedreams are to be somehow involved in brdwy production of wicked, like as orchestra conductor or pit performer, tech, or smth. obviously actor would be the best but theatre in general is amazing and I love all aspects of it, so maybe one day it'll happen ;)

"feeling isolated" I (as we all did) felt that way during the pandemic. not being able to see the show LIVE that whole time made me sad. I probably watched the show on youtube about 5 times in the 18 months Broadway was in it's extended intermission. I *FINALLY* saw the show again last year in Sacramento and plan to see it in 2024 when the tour comes to San Francisco (that will be my 12th time seeing the show Live)

there are some great power numbers with vocals of tremendous B-Way belts...fantastic. but but but, the most powerful song in the entire show is seemingly understated, but the show is best summed up in "FOR GOOD." that was my conclusion but I later learned that the composer/playwright Stephen Schwartz once pointed to For Good as his best statement in the show.... I hope others will listen carefully, after the power ballads and ringing belts let loose of your ears, and consider the lyrics and meaning of For Good....amazing gem in this musical...

I’m going back to see the show for the 4th time in a few weeks and the last time I went was back in 2007 when I was in high school… my first time seeing the show was for my 13th b-day back in 2005 and, like Mary Kate Morrissey (who might be my Elphie on my upcoming visit), my first Elphie was Shoshana Bean who was such a powerhouse in the role (also Megan Hilty was my first Glinda and she was fantastic)…. My following visits include seeing the tour in late 2005 w/ the always talented SJB defying gravity (opp. Kendra Kassebaum) and, during my most recent trip to Wicked in 2007, I saw Julia Murney absolutely kill it as Elphie (also cool was that I saw Alli Mauzey’s 1st ever performance as Glinda that show back during her standby days and she killed it even then and did so many opt-ups 😍)… am truly excited to return to Oz as a 30 something now! 😍🥹💚💖
