Post-quarantine, a review: New ownership, and a new perspective on how Williams have decided to operate in the future. Taking the hydraulics and gearbox (on top of the engine) from Mercedes shows that Williams have decided to take a different direction, as CY mentioned they may need to in order to improve in the future. And as we can see, with 4 points-scoring finishes, a podium and 2 top-3 qualifying positions in the last 5 races show that maybe they are on their way back. Outstanding video my friend, keep it up.

48 minutes packed with information! Took me at an hour to watch! About being a constructor: I think Williams forgot to ask themselves at every decision: ‘How much will this contribute to getting points?’. Developing your own gearbox is very romantic but if all teams use carbon fibre and you’re the only one that’s not and your costs are several times higher than the one you can purchase from Mercedes, then you clearly aren’t focussed to winning but focussed on engineering. The same goes for the pedal box. You don’t win races with a pedal box, so just buy one and spend you scarce resources on aero and suspension.

Such real view. That Monza 2003 GP and the races that followed were some real farces, because of the FIA (Ferrari Insurance Agency) intervention in disqualifying the Michelin tires and forcing the French manufacturer build the new tires in record times. And all of that just because the McLaren 2002b and Williams FW25 were a concrete threat to win the title that year.
@nathanturner5186 Жыл бұрын
Late reply but, the FIA didn’t change the tyre rules, Michelin were found to be breaking the existing rules and actually avoided punishment some how. They were lucky not to have had their results disqualified back to 2001. So yes they had to change their tyres, because they were breaking the rules with the ones they’d supplied until then that season and got found out…

Excellent work! Some thoughts: I remember an interview of Gordon Murray I saw somewhere, he was talking about how things have changed compared to his time at F1 as a Designer at McLaren and the tight-knit committees of "two" or "one" making the decisions and how impossible it is to run a team nowadays - Part of it was old-timer dismissiveness (I think, but hey, the guy's brilliant) but a good chunk of it holds true I believe, especially now - I can't imagine how difficult it must be to turn a team around, especially when morale is down. One more thought, that I think, also holds weight: A convergence of things happening! People "happening", luck and timing - We live in an age that the thought of success, lies exclusively in the notion of carefully executed steps, tight schedules and unrelenting principles of discipline, ad-nauseam buzz words and bar charts - It's the "gift" that the MBA's of the so-called 'business world' used to infect every single aspect of human endeavour, by carefully and gradually removing the sheer luck, pathos,(or passion if you like) perseverance against all odds and sentimentality that rightfully accompanies any difficult effort because without it you cannot and will not win - A state that then, allowed a Ross Brawn to be given a chance without having a degree, a state that now does NOT allow for such 'foolishness' - Its absence playing a major role in the Williams Team's demise as it has in other teams the past 20 or so years. If such parallels would be allowed, SpaceX would not have existed had it not allowed for a culture of 'letting things happen' a 'letting people exist more freely' ethos and the ingenuity that comes out of it - But hey, what do I know, I just like stories and machinery. -Rant complete.

Ye well they are the 3rd oldest team in F1 after Ferrari (who are the only ones to been there consistently from the beginning) and Mclaren. So I bet as new to F1 you had no idea about Mclaren's history and how they used to be top team either? :D Its funny/tragic how similar the story of Williams and Mclaren actually are, they used to dominate the sport around the same time period and BOTH had Adrian Newey designing them championship winning cars, although more so for Williams than with Mclaren due to latter more poor reliability during the years Newey was there. And both started to fall from grace after Newey left them. Also as hard as it was once to see Williams and Mclaren to struggle as much as they have during recent years, just as much its now hard to see them back at front of the grid.

You don't want to hear my medical history in a F1 chat! Really missing the racing this year, was expecting a really good season. Even though they will probably just run this year's cars next year it means the well off teams can do more development work which the little teams just can't afford to do. So instead of seeing a closing up, which I expected this year, the gap might just get bigger. But who knows really. Nothing is certain until we get this virus under control.

An outstanding look at a great team. I do think their determination to remain constructors is to be admired. I do hope, however, that they become a bit more flexible. The only problem I've ever had is Frank's lack of support for all his drivers. His dropping of Hill was by far one of the biggest mistakes he made. They had a talented and very fine development driver in him, and it's possible that the fight against Ferrari might have lasted longer had he stayed. Booting him when he'd just won the WC was not just an error if judgement, though, it marked the team as one that drivers couldn't trust to have any more than a year or two at. Fine if you're using them as a step ladder into faster, better teams, but not one to consider as being a real career team, like Hamilton with Mercedes (remember that his McLaren was _the_ Merc car until they bought Brawn - he's always driven for them), or Schumacher at Ferrari - although his long-standing drive with them had only been made possible because Enzo, a man trusted by no driver, wasn't around. Of course, they shafted him too eventually, but that's another story. But if you look into the decline of Ferrari, which really started in the late 70s, only having the MS years to really shout about barring the odd year here and there, it started because drivers didn't trust Enzo. Anyway, excellent video. Thank you so much for it.

it's so silly what he did to hill. it all stemmed from prost I fear. he accepted the open #2 role bc alain demanded it and he never recovered. it's what would happen to valtteri if he wins. I still think even if he beats hamilton, they'd drop him for george. but damon was so odd bc he was still driving well late 1995. I'll never get that one. or why they chose mansell over piquet knowing they'd lose honda. i guess that turned out to be smart considering honda left but still it was one thing that caught my eye
@tonyb97354 жыл бұрын
What you need to remember is that the decision to replace Hill was made during the season before he won the championship. In that season Hill made a lot of mistakes and it can be fairly argued that he failed to win the championship despite having the best car. Nonetheless, with the benefit of hindsight, it was a mistake bur more importantly it was handled extremely badly. Williams carefully didn't tell Hill in time for him to secure a competitive drive with another team. This upset Hill's friend, Adrian Newey, so much that it gave him impetus to leave and head to McLaren. This was far more damaging to the Williams than any of their drivers leaving. In fact believe you are mistaken in the importance you attach to the drivers. F1 is, and always has been, primarily an engineering formula. A good driver is a bonus. A good engineer is not. How many drivers went on to win world titles after leaving Williams? And how many titles did Newey win after leaving Williams? The answer to that question shows you where the damage was done. In any case, the best drivers want to be in the fastest car. They want the best opportunity to win titles, they're not looking to build a long term relationship and they are not loyal. A driver/team relationship is always a marriage of convenience. As soon as a team fails to give them the fastest car they leave. Schumacher stayed at Ferrari because they gave him the best opportunity to win world titles. And they gave him that opportunity because they had the best engineering team (Brawn/Byrne) and armed them with with the biggest budget. Frank famously stated that for each pound spent he would get a better return in improved track time by spending the money on developing the car rather than paying over the odds for a top driver. And for many years that held true. The problem is that Williams lost the ability to build great cars. And that started with the loss of Newey.

CrankyYankeeF1 I think that a season review video, particularly on 2008, would be really good as it was a close and (quite) controversial season. Even though me and the majority of f1 fans saw/know what happens in this season, it would be cool to see it analysed in a slightly more cut down, race by race way. Idk I just think the season review videos are really good and it would be cool to see your opinions on the controversy (mainly talking about Spa here) I think 2008 is a good representation of Ferrari and it’s ‘special’ relationship with the FIA so it would be an eye opener to people who maybe don’t know why there is a general feeling of fia bias towards Ferrari. It would be interesting for sure and your really good editing skills would definitely make it as if we were rewatching the season again! Thanks

They had a few chances to be a manufacturer works eg BMW but turned it down hence why they lost them. When they lost their designers, they lost their edge. I’m not sure why they let it happen maybe out of loyalty for head but similar to Red Bull today, newey isn’t the technical director. They could have done and likely made him happy. Just guessing obviously but they did have a shot just a shame they didn’t take their chances when they had them

Great video, liked how you included so many technical people within the Williams engineering staff (Paddy Lowe, Frank Dernie, Adrian Newey, Ross Brawn,...). I felt two of the last couple decades at Williams worst mistakes was 1) pushing Head aside and bringing Sam Micheal as Technical Director in 2004 and 2) Firing Patrick Symonds in 2016 and brining in Paddy Lowe. 1) To demote Head to me made no sense, there were some technical problems but not to the extent that warranted that move. Williams from 2000-2003 placed 3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd in WCC. Kinda wonder if Williams overreacted to their mediocre 2004 season with the walrus car. 2) Firing Symonds also made no sense, I kinda suspect this was more of a Claire move than a Frank. Symonds came in 2013 and designed a fairly straightforward car especially the aero compared to his predecessor Mike Couglan's led designs which placed 8th and 9th in the WCC. They also had the Renault powerplant which was a very competitive engine for Red Bull for 2010-2013. Symonds spoke about the issues of his cars when he was at Williams and didn't candy-coat it either, there were problems trying to keep a consistent balance to the chassis and tire wear over race distance but his cars were still competitive. His simple aero approach made it simple to setup the cars, something he learned from working on Schumacher's championship winning Bennetons in the mid 90's and Alonso's championship Renaults in the mid 2000's (he was part of the engineered/design of both cars). Symonds FW36/37/38 placed 3rd, 3rd, and 5th in the WCC when he was there. Why Symonds was let go for Paddy Lowe is besides me. Lowe's designs only achieved 10th and 10th, his Lowe's first season at Williams they used the FW40 which still placed 5th in the WCC.
