My solution to frozen pipes on the farm last week(Co. Clare). - Added a tee piece to where the pipe comes out of the ground. Add a shut-off valve to the tee-piece. Thaw the tee piece and valve every morning. Add hose reel to the shut-off valve and run hose to drinkers. Bring hose reel into house every night to stop it freezing. Simple but effective.

We had -22°c last week which wasn’t fun but manageable. All our waterers and pipes have heating in them which kept water flowing to all animals nicely. The 6280 barely starter up after 3 hours connected to block heater. Winter is expensive. 😂 But yeah get some heat cables and insulation for your pipes and that works well down to about -4 °c no need for heated waterers but below that it can be an issue. Good luck. 🍀

I have had drinkers freeze on me, the winters of 2009-2010 in NE Scotland was pretty full on! Some local farmers had the shed roof collapse under the weight of the snow and ice. It would snow all day and then freeze solid at night, was like that for weeks

Liv, you probably know this but make sure the goats get the best of the silage. Sheep and goats can be prone to listeria which can be fatal. Try some good hay instead if ye have some. I’m a sheep farmer and we are very careful what we feed to the sheep.

Pure hardship when things freeze. Just when I see the beet harvester in background. Two MF 3125 with armour salmon harvesters lifting beet in co kilkenny today. 3690 drawing away. Rented ground beside homeplace but whoever it was has a love for the masseys like yourself. All well minded and purring away.

Love d videos and the honesty of them thanks mike in Tipperary

Hi Phil I'm out wintering my Dexter cattle and I've been defrosting the water pipe for nearly a week, proper pain in the hole, I've actually stacked breeze blocks round the pipe and filled the holes in them with straw and it has really helped, keep up the good work, looking forward to the beet lifting video, a contractor near use had an Armour Salmon belt lifter years ago, good machine unless the tops got juicey.

It was a normal thing to have happen when we had cattle in Sweden when the temp dropped towards -20. Then it frose inside the barn. But that could be helped by rigging it so that the water always flowed. Combined with insulated pipes it worked most of the time.

Lucky enough the frost wasn't too bad here this year, drinkers outside did freeze but we were able to break them to allow for drinking during the day. in previous years we have had the pipes freeze going to sheds. Don't use the small drinking troughs for that reason. Use a 1000L ibc to refill where needed. This is filled from the working taps and will fill the troughs in the sheds. Just stick it on the pallet forks and drain straight down into the drinkers .Let it drain out empty at night and away we go again the next day. luckily enough the troughs are big enough that they can all get enough and arent waiting too long. we have done what you do with a big tank in the holding yard and fill this and let the cattle to it. Have a large water drinker on the passage to the yard and would fill this and just let the cows out the passage for an hour or so to to drink. Once they have had their fill they want to go back into the shed.
