The Fairy in Winter by Walter de la Mare There was a Fairy - flake of winter - Who, when the snow came, whispering, Silence, Sister crystal to crystal sighing, Making of meadow argent palace, Night a star-sown solitude, Cried 'neath her frozen eaves, " I burn here! " Wings diaphanous, beating bee-like, Wand within fingers, locks enspangled, Icicle foot, lip sharp as scarlet, She lifted her eyes in her pitch-black hollow - Green as stalks of weeds in water - Breathed: stirred. Rilled from her heart the ichor, coursing, Flamed and awoke her slumbering magic. Softlier than moth's her pinions trembled; Out into blackness, light-like, she flittered, Leaving her hollow cold, forsaken. In air, o'er crystal, rang twangling night-wind. Bare, rimed pine-woods murmured lament.

I love the titles for all of these stories. In my experience, fairy stories that take place in Winter are the most mysterious, despite Samhain/Halloween and Walpurgus/Beltane/May Day being the days when the barrier between the worlds is thinnest supposedly. I have a theory that most spirits hibernate during Winter, hence why most trouble you see during that season is man-made or due to poor preparations for harsher weather; I tend not to feel much organic magic in the air during this time of year, especially 2022-23's Winter which has been unseasonably warm and terrible for hibernating creatures, eg squirrels, certain birds, and even a big, mainly white skunk I have dubbed Streaky.

The giant White stag and the Man in the last Fairy encounter account, sound remarkably like Harry Potter’s Patronus and his Father James Potter! I think that the reason why Harry Potter’s Patronus was a stag, is because, his Father, James Potter, was an unregistered Animagus. A stag. So, it’s possible that what the two cold and terrified Children actually saw was no Fairy. It might’ve actually been James Potter, first, in his Human form, as James. And then in his Animagus form, as a stag! Wouldn’t that be something?
