A wooden LED hanging lamp - design and making

See how I made a lamp for above the dining table. I used 3 x 2,5 Watt 12 volt G4 LEDs and 4 x 5 cm RGB-strip, of which I only used the green. The power supply is above the ceiling, the steel cables are used for powering the lamp. These steel cables are being sold in a hanging kit, this one: • Staalkabelkit lamp oph... , I bought them from a local webshop, www.staalkabel....
I used 15 mm aluminium strip (L- and U-shaped).

I’ve refinished wood many times, and made new pieces too. I stain it, then butchers (carpenters) wax for the finish. I used 0000 steel wool, then clean with alcohol, then wax and buff til you arm hurts and repeat many times. The finish is superb.

Great Work! The aluminum and chrome elements make the lamp elegant and graceful . Leds generate far less heat than regular light bulbs. No reason for concern. GELUKWENS!

Oh! You could use a clear matte topcoat on the shiny light "chimneys" to give them the same brushed metal matte look as the aluminum strips.

We are all (here in the house) very happy with it. Wouldn't sell it for 10000... As I said in the video; the light coming off is truly superb. Over a desk would it be a bit to big, I'm afraid (it's 1.20m long). But yes, you could make a smaller version.

Mooi man! Trots op wezen! Ik moet zeggen dat ik het niet met je eens ben over je kritiek aan het eind op de 'schoorsteentjes' en het aluminium profiel. De combinatie van hout en metaal maakt het visueel veel boeiender wat mij betreft.

Ik kon niet kiezen; die kraanrozetten waren nou eenmaal zwaar verchroomd. Als ik wel de keuze had gehad, dan had ik ze liever aluminium gehad, denk ik. Had het mooier bij elkaar gepast... En over dat profiel... tja, ik ben nog steeds benieuwd hoe de lamp er uit had gezien zonder die alu-hoekprofieltjes. Ik vond ze achteraf minder 'nodig' dan ik vooraf had gedacht. Misschien komt er nog eens een versie zonder die profieltjes - pas dan weet ik of het ook klopt... :-) Ja ben er wel trots op. Meer dan op het tafeltje van die andere video, terwijl dat tafeltje hier op KZbin om de een of andere reden veel meer aandacht trekt...

looks cool! How did you connect the led to the suspensions/wired? And even more importantly how did you go about connecting it to the power outlet in the ceiling?

Yes I regret not have shown that. In the lamp I drilled two long holes from the hanging wires to the first light. In there run the + and - of the powering wires. At the ceiling the two hanging wires are connected to a transformer I could hide in the ceiling (there just happened to be some sort of cavity). The transformer is connected to the main power. I learned from that, because for the latest lamp I made (wait for the video - it might take me some weeks), I made a ceiling part too. Just a piece of wood with the same measurements as the lamp, so the wires run straight up, and up there you have a place for the transformer too. Also I gave that ceiling part some LED strips that shine up, onto the ceiling. It gives a nice effect. That latest lamp is some kind of continuation of this one, as I took the same concept (flat lamp with three lights), but I placed the lights ABOVE the lamp shining down and made that piece of transparant epoxy. I filled that up with gemstones. I like the way it came out. And more important, that lamp was allowed to stay above our dining table as well (doesn't happen with all of my projects - almost none my wife likes well enough 😏).

Well, I also want to build my own lamp. But I don't have the tools. So that means instead of putting just a slit into the wood I have to make 10 smaller wood plates. And 5 pieces of multicolor adressable led strips. Then I have to Programm the effects. So would you suggest using the cheapest wood for the first one, after all I never have build furniture? The only good thing is that I can check the electric wiring to German standards on my own. (Mostly for insurance reasons)

The tools are of minor importance, as is the material. Your will and determination is key. Just do it with whatever you have, and however you think it is right. Asking for help is not bad, copying what someone else made is not bad, and even failure is not bad. THAT is the way you LEARN. JUST DO IT! I wish you lots of success! Deutsch? Adri Mathlener dankjewel, Adri! Er staat een tafeltje in de garage dat bijna klaar is (en dus ook de video). Dat zat alleen een beetje tegen. Ik moest twee keer extra epoxy bijbestellen en dat kostte iedere keer een week extra... dat spul hardt extreem langzaam uit. Die tafel duurt nog even, maar komende week komt er hier wel een video over mijn bus... Doe Groningen de groeten van mij! ;-)

I think that it is good to have the aluminium straight edges. They make a lovely contrast to the edge you carved into the wood, and the colour of the wood. Brilliant piece of artistic decor.
